The House of Queen Berúthiel - The Cat-Lovers Guild (Part 3)

The varied peoples of Middle-earth at times found unity in their pursuits, and all too often experienced deep rifts. Engage in lively conversations as we banter about the differences between the Alliances, and recruit for our People as well. Remember, keep it friendly.

Figgs is still sneezing, but not anywhere nearly as bad as he was.

The others are doing OK, except I really have to get Zavie's tooth looked at.

Glad to hear everyone's furbabies are fine.

Mackie's fine. But you know it's hot when the preferred sleep zone for a cat is the bare floor.

True, although my guys still prefer the bed.

I have to make them move so I can get in it too, much to their annoyance. :D

Would love to see him.

I try to get pictures of my guys, but every time I point a camera (or cell phone) at them, they move.

Usually towards me to see what I've got in my hand.

I really don't want close-ups of their noses and whiskers.

I guess you'll have to get them while they're sleeping. :)

Iris, does this mean that Licorice is all yours now?

I have photos of our guys, taken a few years ago (back when the Big O was still big, and the Macatoon still looked like a kitten), but I still don't have a way of getting them on the computer...

Morwenna: Yup. He's my baby. :D I gave up when bringing him home from his "adjustment" and he was scared and I was holding him in the back of my mom's van and saying "It's okay, Momma's got you, you're okay." I thought, well, that's it. :)

We're having some trouble getting him and Moses to get along, though. He's all enthusiasm and Moses is like, "WHAT THE HELL IS THAT THING!?" So. Rob wants to cut out a section of the door between the upstairs and downstairs and put in a screen so they'll "talk" and maybe get along. I'm thinking something more like a large baby gate where we won't be cutting the door. But they need this. Wish us luck!

That poor little baby! And she lost her babies, even worse. :(

I'd like to get my hands on the slimy creep that did that. I wonder how he (or she) would like being thrown off a bridge.

Preferably into shark-infested waters.

I'm glad that man was there to save little Miracle. I hope she has a forever home with him.

I hate people.

In general.

So, I have pictures of my boys...not Moses, he's being camera shy. :)

Okay...I'm having some trouble resizing, so these are links...and if that doesn't work, I'll come back and find something better. :)

Dear fellow cat parents who take their babies out on harness/leash, My Rune is about 3years old. We've not really worked with anything but a collar (that she always manages to slip out of) but she has some pretty nasty separation anxiety and our lifestyle is about to change drastically. I'll be pretty equally on the road and home, and though it looks like money will be getting better, I can't really afford a kitty sitter all the time. My plan is to get her harness/leash trained, certified as a companion animal, and just take her with me. Any tips appreciated.

I wish I could help, but I've only had one cat who liked walking with a harness. I actually think it was more the cat's idea than mine.

I tried to get the other cats I had at the time to use the harness, but after I carried them outside, they'd just flop down on the sidewalk looking stricken, and yowling mournfully.

One of them was even afraid of the grass. :?

Good luck to you though. I hope your kitty takes to it with no problem.

Took Zavie to the vet yesterday. I've scheduled his dental procedure for next Friday, cause he has to be on antibiotics for a week before they'll do it.

They wanted to give me a liquid antibiotic, but I said no. It's not easy getting the pill in him, but at least I know when I succeed, he's gotten the antibiotic.

With the liquid, I could never be sure if any of it actually got inside the cat as opposed to all over the outside of the cat. (and me, and the floor, etc.)

They also had to do blood work, poor little guy. :(

It was kinda funny. I don't know if he thought he was punishing me or what, but after we go home and I gave him his pill and his supper, he claimed my recliner.

Stretched out, went to sleep, and wouldn't move.

I let him keep it. I sat somewhere else. I figured he'd been traumatized enough for one day.

Nah, my guys aren't spoiled. :D

What all does Zavie need done, LK? We'll say a kitty prayer for him. :)

We took Pharaoh and Moses to the vet on Thursday...that's when they have evening hours. We got Old Doc as opposed to his nephew,
who is mostly running the place now. Both boys are healthy, but he said Pharaoh is fat. I almost said, "well, have you looked at his pet parents?" but I didn't. It's not his fault. We can control our eating, but he just does what he does, so we have to cut back. He says we're torturing him. ;)

We about lost Moses. Car trips are not high on their list of fun, and Moses has taken very few. I went into the office to check in, then came out to help Rob bring the boys in, and when I opened the door, Mo made a break for it. Thank God I was able to snatch the leash in time, and then got him. The original plan was for me to hold Pharaoh, but we switched it to me holding Moses. Oh, the trauma!

Calma and Iris----Zavie needs his teeth cleaned, and an abscessed tooth removed.

I have to try to get Sindarin in next. His teeth aren't as bad as Zave's, but they need to be looked at.

Don't know where I'm gonna get the money for all this. I had to borrow to have Zavie taken care of.

My poor kitties, they deserve a better owner. Preferably one who isn't constantly broke. :(

Thanks for the good thoughts and the prayers. I hope he comes through the procedure OK, it's always tricky with older cats and anesthesia.

How are your babies, LK?
Hope all is well with them.

My little Pawkah is soooo cute.
See, she LOVES cheese.
She'd eat it day and night, if I'd let her.
Anyway lately she has gone into hibernation mode
And is sleeping on top the dryer.
This afternoon, I had a hankerin' for some nachos.
As soon as I opened the fridge and crinkled the cheese bag

BOOM!!

Pawkah was awake and at my feet waiting for her cheese.
I gave her and Pawsha (because you never forget your Pawsha) some cheese.
Pawkah scarfed hers down then went back to her bed on the dryer.
Yep, and in less than a minute, she asleep again.

Gotta love Pawkahs.

The vet had to take more of Zavie's teeth than just the abscessed one. He had a lot of gum disease. I had to keep him on antibiotics 10 days before the procedure, and for a week after.

Poor little guy, he doesn't have many teeth left now. But he's doing a lot better. His breath doesn't smell so bad and he doesn't have bloody drool like he used to.

I just wish I had the money to pay off his bill, then get Sindarin taken care of. Nim and Figgs need to go too. Their teeth aren't so bad, but I'd like to get checked out before they GET really bad.

Calma----you have cheese kitties. I have one. Figgs loves cheese, the others not so much.

LK, I know how you feel about cat vet expenses; remember a year and a half ago when we had to manufacture the budget for poor old Oreo. As for teeth, we've been lucky with our guys; the vet said Oreo had the best teeth he'd seen in ages, and yesterday he said the same thing about Mackie, who was in for his annual checkup & shots. We haven't heard anything back about the blood work or stool, so I guess no news is good news. Let's hope Mackie's health always stays this good!

How old is Zavie, by the way?

He's 13. He's one of my friend's cats that I inherited when she passed away. All of her guys seemed to be prone to bad teeth and gum disease. Zavie's the only one of hers I have left, the other having succumbed to old age, cancer, and kidney disease.

Of my 3 other cats, which I had before I took on Kathy's guys, only Sindarin seems to have teeth problems. Not that it would hurt for Nim and Figgs to get their teeth cleaned, they're just nowhere near as bad as Zavie.

Glad to hear your kitties are doing well.

Hope everyone else's furbabies are good.

My girls are good.
They are loving the space heaters we've been using.
Our furnace up a quit so my babyman brought out the kerosene heater
And Pawkah especially has been sleeping near it for the last three days.
She's going to be sad tomorrow because that's when the furnace will be fixed.

Awww.

Licorice likes cuddling between mom and dad at night now that it's cold...and the upstairs is chilly, and he's got thin hair. So we have to be careful not to squash a kitty.

Love those leaping pictures! :D

We only have one furbaby now. Hubby says we really need another one, at least as companion for Mackie, but I'm resisting because (a) we'd have to clear it with the landlord, and (b) we're not getting any younger and I don't want a cat to outlive us, or someday be stuck having to move into some digs where we can't take him. Mackie's 10 now, and if all goes well we'll still have him for another 6 or 7 years or maybe even a decade, which will get me perilously close to 80.

I've just been rereading the comments about leashes and halters, and remembering Mici, the cat I had in single adulthood. A friend brought over a rig to try out on Mici, since she was such an escape artist and would definitely enjoy time outdoors (she had been an indoor-outdoor cat before I got her), but once we got the thing on her, and not all the way on either, she broke our grip and hid under a chair. We didn't try that again.

We never did try that out on the boys, except for once when Oreo was quite young; he may still have been a kitten. I tied a piece of rope around him somehow, wanting to see if it would be worthwhile to get him a rig, but when I put him down on the back walk, he stood stock still. I couldn't get him to move. End of experiment. (That's not to say he didn't love escaping the apartment! But his usual goal was the apartment upstairs for some reason.) Mackie, OTOH, loves sniffing out the window, but when you try carrying him out the door, he freaks! If he's in his carrier, he hollers; he doesn't even wait to get into the car. He even freaks when the window's open for grocery transfer and hubby's right out there talking to him, and I pick him up to bring him to hubby. "NO!!! Not out there!!!" kick scratch etc. etc. ...

He is a warmth junkie though. We have steam radiators, and a couple of them have flat toppers on them. He likes to lie on the one in the bathroom, so I keep a quartered-folded piece of terrycloth on there for him to lie on. It's definitely one of his favorite spots. (Oddly enough, Oreo didn't do that, though Oreo did like to sit on the living room one and look out the front window.) Oreo used to go under the covers when he was young but got away from it (I think mainly because hubby discouraged him, since in those days he often slept in the buff), but Mackie discovered the joys of being under the covers whether anyone else is there or not. Often, if we can't find him in his usual spots, we just look for a lump in the bed.
