My favorite big dog is the Belgian Tervuren, but it didn't place. They never do somehow. And this year it was a particularly lovely one.
The Sheltie, I thought looked really good (I don't like the way their eyes have gotten smaller in recent decades). Can you tell my favorite group is Herding?
But oh well, tonight will the the terriers. They're fun.
I do have a quibble about many in the terrier and sporting groups though; I used to take this for granted when I was younger, but in recent years my spirit has rebelled. I hate the fact of docking tails. Many terriers and most spaniels have it required. WHY??? I imagine that spaniels' tails must naturally be like those of setters. Look at the Cavalier King Charles from the toy group; that has a beautiful tail! I can understand that the use to which spaniels have traditionally been put is more conducive to not having long tails that get in the way, but those uses are hardly ever called on anymore. As for terriers, some of the standards only require a small docking. Why bother?? As long as their tails are strong enough to act as handles when they go underground, who cares if they're a little longer? And some terriers are too big for that anyway.
Most places in the US have now forbidden the cropping of ears. Next Step: The Tails!!!
