Don't get me started on what they've done to purebred cats!! :x Fortunately the more extreme breeds (i.e. Persians and Siamese) have advocates for the older forms, who breed for the older characteristics. Here's hoping there's someone out there still breeding old-fashioned German Shepherds and American cocker spaniels too! And let's get rid of the pinprick-eyed Shelties!

Yeah, and I remember the dog jumping up and down.
He knew he nailed.

We had a German Shepherd when I was a kid.
(back in the stone ages like you, Morwenna...)
Don't know if he was a pure bred or not.
We didn't have him long.
Daddy gave him away because he wasn't a family friendly dog.

Oh...tonight!!! I had forgotten and I hate to miss me my Westminster Dog Show every year.

I am always pulling for the Doxies and they NEVER win, but I think they are adorable all the same. Same with the Corgi's. Most of the dogs look so regal when they go around the ring, but I also enjoy the silly goofy looks some get when excited.

I am with the poodle haters (just joking, I know no one hates the dogs). I detest the way they style them like French hookers. Let that dang hair just go natural. They are considered one of the smartest breeds of dog, why make them look so STUPID!!!!

We shall see what happens. I may have to record this - this is usually on after my bed time. :P

Thanks Morwenna for reviving the thread, so I remembered to view it.

They always pick the Poodle....

The Poodle just got picked in the non-sporting group.
Oh it didn't win, actually came in fourth,
But still...

THEY PICKED THE POODLE!!!

Stoopfid judge.

We had 2 Dalmatians.

did you know they worry a lot? Constant worry.

We just learned our Sheena has two tumors in her chest/abdomen area. Over $2,000 to remove and the doctor said that while they don't appear malignant they should be removed. Oy.

I told mom we should get copies of the reports and call a couple other vets we deal with to see if they'd do it cheaper.

Sorry to read that Iris.

I didn't watch the whole show...but drifted in and out during it. I did get to see Cinders the mini wirehaired doxie win the hound group. That was a huge surprise. Also the dalmation is really lovely, though it seems like the doxies they never win.

Tonight is for all the marbles as they say.

BTW...I am really tired of the peke winning. To me they are nothing but floor sweepers. You can't even see them with all that dang hair and they can barely move. I never get it.

The shepherd was good looking even with the low rear end model.

Ooh, Iris... :( Better get them removed indeed; let our poor old spaniel be a lesson. Hers were malignant, but if they'd been caught in time, who knows?

At least the Sheltie got fourth! FTR, that was the nicest Sheltie I've seen in the show in a long time. At least he had decent eyes! :) As for toy breeds, why doesn't the Pom ever win, huh??

Tonight: Working, Sporting, and Terriers. And BiS. :D

I had all I could do to stay awake for the Herding group. Hubby told me I should stand up and that would keep me awake. It did, but I don't stand still well; I was pacing and rocking back and forth and all. But I stayed awake! :D

P.S. Calma, at least they only picked one Poodle! :P

Iris, sorry to hear about the dog.
Hope all works out for it.

I'm not sure, but I think you can stream the show on your 'puter.
Couldn't hurt to Google Westminster and see what happens.

Yeah, they only picked ONE Poode,
But that was ONE Poodle too many. :P

Not a Peke person myself,
But they're better than a Poodle.
I was hoping for the Papillon of course.

My sister has a mini Doxie and a Cairn terrier.
Bet she's happy about the Doxie, too.
And will be rooting for the Cairn.

ETA...

Try this one, Iris

ETA... Again...

I thought it would be the Dobie.
Wow, she chose the Peke.

What was she thinking???

She picked the Peke over that totally magnificent Doberman, and that wonderful Boxer, and that more-than-deserving Dachsie and equally appealing Dalmatian, and that lovely Irish Setter, and that better-than-I've-seen-in-a-long-time German Shepherd...

What WAS she thinking???

BTW, anyone noticed there seemed to be a larger-than-usual proportion of females in the finals? :D

And of course you did notice

THEY DIDN'T PICK THE GOLDEN!!

So, like what else is new?

Oh, and I just LOVED the gown the judge was wearing.
The dark blue one?
Very elegant.
I think she judged the sporting.

Now the BiS judge?
Girl, she looked like she just go out of bed.
Really?
Woman, you are about to judge BiS at the greatest dog show on Earth
And you look like you're wearing your Grandma's quilt.
That's what you get for not picking the Dobie. :P

That Dobie was absolutely breathtaking. How anyone could pass by that dog will remain a mystery till the end of time. Whew... For once I agreed with a group judge!

Though I will say that the German Shepherd was definitely better than the ones I've been seeing lately, and if they got high grades... Well, at least this one got the group. Thought I did think some other Herders were more deserving. JMHO.

I guess I was fixated on the Boxer too; it didn't win the group, of course. I forgot the Kerry. I wouldn't have picked the Kerry, though I have no real complaint there. I thought the Scottie and the Wheaten and the Welsh were better. And the AmStaf.

The Peke promised to dust her floors for her later. ;)

I'd personally like to see a Dalmatian win some time. You just gotta love 'em! :D Did you know they grin? It's a trait...at first it looks like they're being mean, but they're really grinning, and will grin at you if you grin at them. :)

The surgery is scheduled for Friday morning.

Oh the disappointment. That Peke I think won a few years ago too and was in the line up for BiS last year too IIRC. I could be wrong on that. But I recall seeing a Peke sweeping the floors in the past several years.

I thought of course that the Doxie showed really well and was just cute as could be, but I think the winner should have been either the Shepherd or the Dobie, both were just perfect to my eyeballs. I don't know what she saw in the Peke this year.

Calma, I did notice that there were many from our state. :D We must like to breed doggies out this way. :D Your sister has a mini Doxie? Smooth coated? I had one for 11 years and after she went, I haven't had the heart to get another. I know it sounds sappy, but I feel I would always compare another to how great my Gussie was. I am thinking if I can get another dog some day it will be a Corgi. :D

And on the BiS ring wear by the judges, I always thought that especially for the BiS the men wore Tux and the women formal gowns. Don't know what was UP with that woman. Geesh. Takes away the glamour of BiS for me.

Morwenna, the Dobie was beautiful. I have to agree but also the Kerry too.

Iris, good luck for your doggie on the surgery and you can watch the whole show online.

Oh well, there is always next year to miss the Golden, Dobie, Shepherd, Doxie, Dalmation and of course to SEE a poodle get called out. *twitch* :D

My Rascal would...

BTW, did you catch the issue behind the judging committee for BiS?
I heard running footsteps then saw someone holding a rolled paper
Then tow guys in suits jump to their feet and grab the person
Then hustle him out double time.

Anyone beside me see that?
I tried to find it on You Tube,
But couldn't get the scene.

Yes Calma. They were people from PETA and they got them out of there before they could make a scene. Do you remember that a few years ago they were actually successful in delaying a presentation?

Let me see if I can find the link for you...

Right before the champion was picked, two PETA members were stopped by security as they tried to reach the center ring, drawing boos from the crowd. A few years ago, two protesters from PETA disrupted the presentation.

Yeah, I sort of remember it, but not clearly.
I don't know how they can think this is unethical treatment.
The dogs are well cared for.
They are not starved or beaten.
They are trained to do what comes natural.

Sometimes PETA just goes too far.

Thanks for the link, rwhen.
I thought it was funny the way the suits went to work.

Or pay a large fine.

Speaking of dachshunds, I was remembering this morning of something in my childhood. When Lady and the Tramp came out, I was about eight, and I obsessed over that movie! I had two comic-book versions, the clipped-out Sunday comics version, a record of two songs from the movie, some of the figurines from inside cereal boxes, the whole thing. Well, if you recall, there was a dachshund in the pound scene; and being young and having no clue about German pronunciation, I thought it was "dash-hound" and that it was called that because the dog was shaped like a dash. :)

A lot of people around here say dash-hound...which is funny if you consider the heavy German population around here. :P

Iris. :lmbo: That is a great Irony Bear. :D

Calma, PETA does go too far. I am all for the ethical treatment of animals, but dog shows are the wrong target. These pets for the most part I would bet are pampered and fawned over. They are worth a ton of money and tons of money goes into the show circuit all year long. People want to protect their investment, not abuse it.

Morwenna, I remember the Doxie in Lady and the Tramp. Very cute as I recall. I actually didn't get into the breed until several years out of school a co worker had a preggars Doxie who was within days of delivery and had to go out of town for a family emergency. She was asking for volunteera to stay in her home and watch the dog for two days. I volunteered. The dog had the puppies that very first night. It was amazing. All went just as mother nature planned and I cleaned up and got new bedding for the mommy and puppies. This was an AKC registered Doxie and even back then the puppies went for around $300. When the owners got home they were so grateful they gave me the runt of the litter as a gift.

That was Ima. Sorry to say that when I was packing to move from NV to CA, I had her in the bathroom and one of the friends helping me left the door open. I know it couldn't have been five minutes and those dogs have very short legs, but with five people searching the whole area for hours no one ever saw her again. I suspect that with as loving and trusting as she was, she went up to someone in the neighborhood and they scooped her up. But that hooked me on Doxies. Love them.
