The Hobbits' Cooking Guild

The varied peoples of Middle-earth at times found unity in their pursuits, and all too often experienced deep rifts. Engage in lively conversations as we banter about the differences between the Alliances, and recruit for our People as well. Remember, keep it friendly.

EUUUREEAAKKA!!!!
I have found the Recipe.

Grandmother's Molasses Taffy

1 c (250 ml)molasses
1/2 c (125 ml)granulated sugar
1/2 c (125 ml)brown sugar
1/3 c (75 ml)water
2 tbsp (25 ml)butter
1/4 tsp (1 ml)baking soda
Pinch of salt

In a medium, heavy saucepan, combine molasses, both sugars and water. Heat to boiling and stir to dissovle sugars. Let mixture boil, without stirring until syrup reaches the hard ball stage (260F/125C) on a candy thermometer.
Remove from heat, stir in butter, baking soda and salt. Immediately pour onto a buttered marble slab or baking sheet.
When cool enough to handle, butter hands and gather taffy into a ball. Pull taffy between hands and continually stretch and fold, then stretch again until taffy turns lighter in colour(this can take from 5 to 15 mins)
Stretch and twist taffy into a rope about 1 inch thick and cut into pieces using buttered scissors. Wrap each piece in waxed paper. Makes about 48 pieces.

Microwave Method

In a 2 quart (2L) glass measure, combine molasses, sugars and water. Microwave, uncovered, at High(100\%) for 4-5 mins, until mixture comes to aboil, stirring once to dissove sugars. Continue to microwave at High for 6-8 mins more until syrup reaches the hard ball stage on a candy thermometer. Stir in butter, baking soda, salt; adn pour onto buttered slab or baking sheet. Follow directions outlined above.

Though this is not a tried and true, I'm trying it very soon. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>
Wow sixty postings, four pages, this is turning into a very respectable thread.

Rodia, keep working on the website. It’s like that movie “Field of Dreams” with Kevin Costner.
The foodies are out there. If you build it they will come (can we talk about that color though, that green is not very appetizing.) Hey how do you folk get the pictures into you signatures?

Eilona, type your replies onto a word processing program like MSWord and use the spellchecker. Then cut and paste your reply into the thread. The scones sound perfect
I bet the tarragon and the cheddar go great together, and all the ingredients would be realistic in a rustic setting.

Never seen it, Woodley...<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> sounds far too grand for comparing with my mite of a little site....

Here's the deal:

I absolutely adore green, but just to please one of my bestest foodies (you said it first!)<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif"border=0> I changed the background on these two pages: hobbitfood.freeservers.com/welcome.htm and hobbitfood.freeservers.com/index.htm

It's just a test, so think about it. I think it's nice, but too muddly...

Also, I promise to put all the new recipes up by the end of the week (you know, school...bleh.)<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-rolleyes.gif"border=0>

Ah,also: when I asked about the flour, I was wondering what "L" meant.
Maybe you do it different, but we don't buy flour by the litre where I come from...<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif"border=0>

I must say, if this thread is growing, it's all thanks to youse...

Good evening, ladies and gentlemen, the topics for tonight’s Guild council are:

What to do with recipes that don’t really sound like anything from ME (ex. Irish Stew) I stuck them on a special TORCers page for the moment, and TORCers will be just be considered a separate Middle Earth people if nobody has any better ideas.<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>
Also, if you have a recipe that’s not clearly said to be from any part of ME, tell me which people you learnt it from so’s I can put it in the right place.

Also, Woodley, if it’s not too much trouble, could you tell me the chapter you got that quote from?

Another thing- once I get (we get) our site fixed properly, there’s bound to be lots of updates and changes and stuff that youse would probably want to know about. (like now, actually<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> )
I’m a modem user and travel a lot, so I can’t always visit this thread, and to be honest I’m trying to make some cuts on the phone bills. So, do any of youse want to be notified of changes, updates, ideas and such by email?

I promise no spam, no nothing except Guild business, no giving your adress to other people and to stop or start mailing you whenever you ask.

That’s one of my many ideas...not necessarily good ones.
Working on it (and also trying to create the Perfect Cinnamon Cookie...)
Rodia!

Me again, sorry to bother you.
Still don’t know what you’d think of:

-a page with all of youse listed, perhaps with your TORC statuses, banners, whatevers?
(If somebody (me?) is to do this they had better get started soon while there’s not too many of us, so tell me if you want it)
-an introduction to the White Council, because this is where the site sprouts from
(this is a MUST, I think. Only I’d like somebody less newbie than me to do it.)

Incidentally, does anyone know how to change the default font for MSWord? My little sister messed about with it and now it’s stuck at ABCFILM. No fun.<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-rolleyes.gif"border=0>

Woodley, I sometimes have to wait a few minutes to get onto the threads. If I do recipes on MSWord, will that cut down on the time required to get here? Besides, using spellcheck causes consternation, because it always highlites Cdn spelling. Most vexing.

Hi,
I suppose we could call it “Shire Stew.” Is that what we’re gonna do? Take regular recipes and make them middle earth recipes by naming them after things from middle earth? We could end up with all sorts of things.

Rodia ,
The quote comes from “THE HOBBIT” a chapter entitled “Riddles in the dark”. Off hand I’d say it was chapter five (I'll check on that and get back to you). In the future I will remember to quote chapter and verse.

Oh, and by the way what “L” are you talking about.

Ruby_Loamsdown
Welcome,
It’s all about cooking and eating, and things that Hobbits love.
And helping Rodia with the new website.

What does LOL mean?
Okay - I have been meaning to add a Mushroom recipe for a while...I think you all will enjoy this ..and if you Love Cooking...you will enjoy it more ...

Farmer Maggots Mushroom Dumplings

Now you can use a variety of mushrooms here...I prefer using the jarred mushrooms or fresh/dried pickle jars for this recipe...

DUMPLINGS:
1 1/2 cups water
1 tsp sugar
1 tablespoon active dry yeast
1 tsp salt
3-4 cups flour

Pour water in bowl dissolve sugar then yeast...after proofing add salt and gradually add 3 cups of flour...The dough will be soft..knead it on a floured board or counter....place in a well oiled Bowl, cover with a damp cloth and let rise 1 hour...
When its doubled...Knock it down and knead again lightly..Make small 1 inch size balls...Shape or roll these into a flat round circle...

You will need a steamer or simply a pan with boiling water and a strainer works well too.....Start readying your steamer as you prepare the filling...mmmmm filling,,,,,

2 cups Farmer Maggot mushrooms diced or cubed
1/4 cup shredded carrots
1 large egg
1 tsp salt
2 tsp sugar
1 tsp honey
1/4 tsp cornstarch
2 tblsp of chives
2 tblsp of ginger
1 tsp lemon juice
1/4 cup peanut or vegetable oil
2 tsp soy sauce or even worchester sauce
CHEESE!!!!! Mozarella works best here!! About 1/2 cup of cheese or more if your brave!! hahaha
Season with Salt, Pepper, Garlic, and Basil to taste....

Place a spoonful of this tasty filling into the middle of your dumpling rounds. Pull sides together and pinch them. Steam 6 dumplings at a time, depending on the size of your steamer, for about 15-20 minutes till dumplings are firm but tender. Remove let cool and dip in the sauce!!

THE Sauce:
1/2 CUP SOY SAUCE
1/8 CUP Oil
dollop of mustard
1/2 tsp fresh or 1/4 tsp ground ginger
diced chives
Mix well and serve

Like i said a labor of love...But the mushrooms will be tender, juicy and ripe for the dipping! You can also steam these partway then pan fry them to get a crunchy crusty flavor....i reccommend a good fryer and hot oil!!!

Enjoy the homeade dumplings...Tested here...but i also used meat...a shredded roast...or you can use pork..along with the mushrooms...If you use meat...add another egg and of course Season Well! AND You will need to cook them LONGER ..about 30 minutes to cook the meat well...Rodia - i could not view all of your site ..so i hope you will find a place for it here ...I was trying to see alist of recipes you alreayd have...But it wasnt on post#1?? Guess its on that site ill have to try and view soon! Hope this is appropriate and remember...Once you get and Entwife started on recipes...you may be sorry you asked..<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0><img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0><img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>...i love to cook and my recipes are never simple ...but always good!!! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0><img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0><img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>
