Hello dear skilled handworkers!

(this space is currently under construction <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> )

We completed a Quilt for the Toronto Gathering (check the link in this signature) and it was raffled off for the beautiful sum of 750 US dollars, and was won by a young lady from New York (not a TORC site member, but from one of the other many fan sites attending the Gathering).
The proceeds for the Quilt went towards Women in Literacy / Women in Action, a part of Proliteracy Worldwide.

As for now- WHAT'S NEXT- people have asked me????<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-confused.gif"border=0>

At the moment we are satisfied to gather in this guild to share common wisdom and knowlege, about our current handwork projects, and to dream of new things. If you have any questions about creating your own patterns, what programs to use, or can share with us your experience as well, please do join us.

Many of you have expressed interest in obtaining the patterns that were used to create the quilt. Please keep an eye on this space, as it would be here that you will first find out when the patterns will be made available. I am working on it at the moment.

Hey Tarina!
Glad to see you here too! Where are you from? (just gathering logistics data<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>).

I hope we gather a few more hands, or else it will be an immense work for two, No!<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

I've already got people from two guilds coming up with shield designs to be translated to cross stitch. Do you have a computer program (Like Pattern Maker) for making patterns?
I have one, and I will begin looking at the banners and trying a few patterns out if I can.

If this works out, it will be great fun!

I'm in Logan, Utah, USA.

I have a program on my comp that I can make patterns on, and I have a free trial of a program that allows you to transfer .bmp images into patterns.

If it's just the two of us it'll be a lot of work, but I have a lot of time on my hands, so I can do quite a few, depending on how big they are.

Thanks for Joining us Bardhwyn! Now somehow I have to keep track of who is doing what<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

I am in the process of asking the Mods if these banner and shield images are copyrighted. And I am then trying to find out where we can get larger images to transfer into patterns.

I'll get back to you on the size. If we have to deal in metric or inches depends on who joins (inches most likely), and I would imagine a smaller Aida for better detailing (I know it's more work, but the outcome is wonderful) We have some time to work these details out as people join in.

Bardhwyn where are you coming from? Smaller Aida would be good, or you could do it in another fabric if you have access to it. Linen looks very nice and it's easy to work with.

I will send future interested people over here so that it remains less confusing.

Tarina- I like the linen idea, but I think we could use both since it is a patchwork quilt. crystal_seed, is anyone designing a pannel for Lothlorien? If not, I can ask the Lothlorien alliance members to help with that. I also posted a message in our alliance advertising this project. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Would you mind if I asked around on RB to see if anyone wants to help us?

I don't mind at all!

Up to this point, Lothlorien is not claimed!

Gals (and Guys- when interested)- I appreciate your going into the threads you frequent to advertise and get more people to help.

Send them to this thread in the Guilds forum though, so we all can see what is going on. That way we can standardize the color for the banners backgrounds, etc...

When the patterns are made up (I just got permission from Admin on doing the banners- have to check on shield though 'cause they are under JRRT's domain)I will give color specifications.

Thanks to you all<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0><img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> I'm getting excited!

Hey CS, it looks as though your most excellent idea will take off! Yay!! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> Hi Tarina, Bardhwyn, Eledaia <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

So, I offer my services as sandwich maker.... No, really, that's a quilting term <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0> Making the sandwich [for the non-quiltspeak speakers] is taking the three main parts of the quilt - the top, the batting and the backing - and putting them together.

CS, I have many questions about the design, but I'll start with a few easy ones. First, what are your feelings on hand-stitching v. machine stitching, for attaching the banners to each other? I'm a fan of machine stitching myself, because it creates much cleaner stitches [for inexperienced quilters!] and it's much faster. Next, is this to be an actual quilt, or will it be a comforter? The difference, again for the non-quilters, is that a comforter is made with "tacks," like decorative pieces of ribbon or yarn, spaced evenly over the piece to hold the layers together [I'm sure everyone's seen this kind of design]. A quilt, otoh, has actual stitching throughout the piece holding the layers together, creating the slightly puffed effect we know as quilting.

I hope I'm not starting off too technical - or too boring! - but these are things we'll have to decide, preferably before we get too deeply into planning.

Again, what a wonderfully exciting idea, CS!! I'm really looking forward to helping this come together <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

[I'm in Austin, TX, btw!]
Okay, CS (is it alright if I call you that? You can call me Rina if you want) I'll post a thread at RB announcing this, and direct them here.

I'm also going to see if the Hugging Guild and FAST would like pannels, and I could most likely get those done as well.

Hi CS. I thought I’d come and register an interest. I enjoy cross-stitching, although I’ve never done anything from my own pattern. If you need a representative from Gondor (and if the fact that I live in the UK isn’t a problem), I’d be really honoured to help. Is anyone doing anything on behalf of the Bard’s Guild? And if someone is feeling very creative, perhaps the Rings Guild could do one as well - I’ll post a link there for you.

Alas, quilting I know nothing about.<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif"border=0>

Hm, I'm thinking that we should do two quilts now...maybe have two different people in different places in charge of each quilt, to gather pieces and then finish it.

Maybe we could have one quilt done with cross-stitch squares and one with applique, etc. The differnet guilds could create a design for their square and then we would translate that into a fabric design...

Nevermind me...I'm just talking...

Welcome Gli, Leoba, and Wisti!

Gli- glad you could join us. We would be honored for you to be the sandwich maker<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> Question one- Yes, I think for time and ease factors machine stitching would be the best way to go. Question Two- Since you know more about quilting than I do, What do you think would look better (quilting or tacking)? To counter that question- can we do quilting over Aida and/or Linen? In any event, the borders could be quilted. I myself prefer quilting, and from the offers of experienced quilters I think it could work out. Tarina and Eledaia know people too that could offer their services.

General question for all: Quilting vs. Tacking- What would you prefer?
Eledaia- I was talking it over again with my husband, and I think we could have both cross stitch and applique together on the quilt (it is after all a patchwork, RIGHT<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>) Are you going to do the Rohan Banner? And/Or something from one of your guilds? Let me know.

So as not to add to the confusion (like I may have in the other thread<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-rolleyes.gif"border=0>) could YOU be responsible for those who will do the applique patches- as they come up. I will leave it up to the individual who is doing the work.

Communications should remain in this thread- so the right hand knows what the left is doing<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0><img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

I will order things as such in the first post so it is clear to see who is doing what.

Rina-
Thanks for the adverts in RB, Hugging Guild and FAST. If someone has interest to help you- grab 'em and bring 'em in. (CS is fine<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>)

Yeah, no problem for me to be in charge of the applique. It think if someone from a guild wants to design the banner, I could use their design to make the applique piece. That way I'm not doing a bunch of designing, just putting things together.

Ok, I am doing the banner for the Horse riders of middle earth guild(I think), and I can do the Rohan Banner, and I would like to do the House of Elwe banner too (and any others when it gets down to the end).

CS: I will post about this in the Bards’ Guild thread as well. I would love to do all 3 (Gondor, Bards and Rings) if there are no other takers for them - we have plenty of time after all, but I’m really not up to designing as my art work is not too hot! If I have a pattern to copy, I'll be stiching away (when I'm not TORCing!)<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

*shy question* May I join the fun?
I am a textile freak - having tried quite a lot of techniques over the years even though it´s many years in some cases ... enjoy quilting and stitching too, usually do my own patterns especially for cross-stitch and knitting ...
on a side note I do some silk painting too (and dyeing wool, silk etc with natural colors and woad/indigo), so if you want any specially dyed fabrics just ask ...
I am very short on money though <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif"border=0> at least till the end of June (when the first a bit more substantial paycheck from this temporary textile teaching job will arrive) - live in Sweden ...

Ioreth! By all means you can join us. Think about what you might want to stitch (any guild you are in or perhaps a banner or shield that is not taken yet- see the list on Post 1). As far as cost, I think if you have material (Aida or Linen) from previous projects and some DMC floss- the cost will not be too overwhelming<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

I am still thinking about the square/patch size for each patch, to fit the most on a quilt or quilts. I will get back to everyone on that!

Have you done applique technique before? I may call on you to help with some of the designs, as there are 30 banners and shields alone to design, not including all the guild representations.

Thanks for joining us.
C.S.<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Leoba and Eledaia-
I have updated the first post and added the respective patches for you both.
I will take on the Followers of Eru guild patch, if it's okay with you Eledaia!

Rina! That is fantastic! A web page- I have little clue how to go about it. Anyone else have any suggestions? Something with stitches and patchwork motive, but also with a clear connection to TORC and the Grand Event! We can then take pictures of our finished patches to feature on the page, so people get a taste of what the whole will look like. These are my thoughts. Anyone else have something to add?

Thanks so much you guys! This is really a project where we can show world community spirit. one tip re: making patterns - you don´t need a computer program at all! (of course it helps and is way faster) - just a normal photocopier ...

take any mm-graded paper (or something with square markings
hmmm - help! I don´t know the right expression right now, but a paper sheet looking like this
_|_|_|
_|_|_|
all the way, measure the "boxes" first then take the sheet to the copier and copy it onto overhead-folie, perhaps making differently sized ones by scaling it up and down (I use gradings of 1mm; 1,5 mm; 2 mm and 3 mm most often, but have sizes in between too!) - copy them onto the (clear, transparent, whatever called) overhead-folie and you have a re-usable sheet you can put over pretty much ANYthing looking visually interesting and taking the cross-stitch-pattern right off it (be it off fabric, paintings, mugs, whatever <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> ...)

If you have a colour-copier nearby you can make it more useful by changing the colours for each 5th and 10th box-line

<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> did this make sense?

I do have plenty of natural-grey linen (flax fibre) stuff around, I was going to make something out of it, can´t remember what and have used it in the past to cover cassette boxes etc <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>
then I think I should have some aida-type white stuff somewhere in this mess <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> - probably quite finely woven though ...
DMC - well, blue should be somewhere - other colours probably not ... but I´ll get some bit of money tomorrow and an extra bit of money at least at the end of June! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

edit: and from a basic cross-stitch-pattern you very easily can make any knitting/croqueting stuff too!
Thanks Ioreth,
That makes perfect sense. Actually, I have such a reuseable foil already.

I will make the basic outline for stitching the banners, and the shields, as I think this should be uniform in size on the quilt.

I will be doing some planning today on it. The size will be determined by the patch square size, (which I am still pondering over, thinking about making these quilts Queen size!)

Also, according to the banner colors here in TORC, I will standardize the DMC floss so that like colored banners - i.e. green background, etc... - will have the same DMC number background color.
Shields and Guild Shield colors will be up to the interpretation of the maker.

If there are colors you don't have or cannot get- perhaps we can send it in the mail<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>
