My view on tanning beds is that when you use a tanning bed, you are buying cancer. They are much worse than the sun and the sun is really bad for your skin. I always wear spf 45 when I am outside because I am very pale and burn easily- plus my mom has a few places with skin cancer from getting burnt while outside, no thank you that is not for me! (Sorry, I just had to say that).<BR><BR>So how many people here are actually from NZ?

Welcome to the NZ Guild Arwenelf, its nice to hear others input <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><BR><BR>To answer your previous question the best time to be in Cambridge would be either Jan-March or Oct-Nov, either one would be very pleasant there, Cambridge is a nice place most of the time they don't really get extremes in weather, but the other date you had April-May would be winter time. But check out this site, it will tell you everything you need to know about Cambridge www.cambridge.net.nz <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><BR><BR>Oh, and I'm from NZ <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Thanks Tygarya! NZ is definitly a lovely place, and I only hope I will be able to visit, and go soon! I'm going to check out that site right now.<BR><BR>I new that the first months Nov/Jan were your summer, but I didn't know when summer ended for you..So if I go, I leave in my winter and get to enjoy summer and would pretty much come home to my spring- that would be nice!

Ooo- I see that Cambridge is in the horse district, now if I could only find somewhere to go trail riding. I think my thoroughbred would be jealus of some of those TBs if he saw them.<BR><BR>The LOTR tours look really awsome (and expensive!). I would love to be able to go horse back riding across the country looking at all the film locations. *Dreams*

I think you'll find that most of the horses in Cambridge are too expensive for that sort of riding <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0> Most are million dollar race horses or stud horses <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> But if you were going to Hanmer Springs in the south island they have a pretty good horse trek place there <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><BR><BR>Tyg

I figured that, but I also thought they might have some of those treck places around Cambridge. I found some (Well, actually a lot) but I am not sure were they are in comparison to cambridge.

I almost managed to get my hands on a secondhand copy of the LOTR Location Book on ebay. Unfortuantely someone else was a bit keener to spend money on it, so I didn't get it. Does anyone know how much it costs in NZ? Here it's available for about NZ $ 30.

Not sure on the price of it here, I'll have to look for it, but about $30 sounds about right to me. Maybe Thorin would know <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0><BR><BR>Tyg

I was looking for some info on New Zealand and heard that you guys might be able to help. I'm going to be visiting NZ this fall and was curious as to whether there are any LOTR filming sites still standing. Are any open to the public? Also, are there any recomended sites and locations to see just for the sake of seeing? We will be renting a car, so it doesn't matter if it is off the beaten track. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have also been looking for info on NZ b/c I am going in January (Hopefully). I don't think any lotr thing is left standing but I do know you can go on guider tours by car, helicopter, or walking. I am pretty sure a lot of the sites were on private property so Im not sure if you can just go and look at them. Were in NZ are you visiting?

I am going to be in the cambridge area (north Island) what should I see around there? I think I will have 2 or 3 weeks of free time were I will be touring and don't know what to see or how to get around or what are good, inexpensive places to stay. Any ideas?

I did find out that there are no snakes in NZ which I am thankful for but the Weta bug looks a little creepy:) I decided I should send one to PJ since he was scared of them.

I will be visiting most of NZ. (I'm spending just shy of the whole month of October there and Australia.) I've heard that the Lake Taupo region is a must see, as is Rotorua. Of course, the Southern Alps, Queenstown, Christchurch, and Mildford Sound are supposedly hard to beat.
I just got a book that might be useful for you. It's called The Lord of the Rings Location Guide. From a brief glance, it appears to be quite helpful.
As to getting around, we will be renting a car. Being from the US, this will be an adventure as they drive on the opposite side of the road.
For accomodation, check out gokiwihotels.com. It appears to be moderately affordable.
Another site to check out is purenz.com. They have many links to travel agencies and motel chains, including Goway, the agency we are using.
Best of luck!

Thanks No_Man! I am also from the US so if I rent a car it will be quite odd. Though, if I am on roads with no other cars on it here I tend to drive on the left side:D I will check out those sites when I get a chance. Do you know were you are getting your plane tickets from? I am trying to find the best deal seeing how I have to pay for it myself and me being the poor college student that I am

We bought our plane tickets through Goway, the agency that set up this trip. You can try Travelocity.com, but be forwarned that they are often not the cheapest. Before we went to Goway, I checked out New Zealand Air's website. They had quite reasonable prices. If you start looking now, you might be able to latch onto a good deal.
Glad to be of service!

Yah, thats what I was going to do. I just got to wait and see if I get accepted to this school. I was doing a search somewhere and they said that tickets weren't available for next january. I am definitly not going to wait until the last moment- I would be in serious debt if I did that!

Hello to both of you, well as I see no one has been around in a while so I'll do my best to answer your questions.
Yes No_Man there are still several LotR sites that you can visit, I believe there actually maybe a tour you can do that visits them all, whether there is actually much left to look at now though I do not know. However you will find that the South Island is the most scenic. If you want culture of the Moari type then Rotorua is definately the place for that if you visit the Marae there, it is suppose to be a really good tour. There are several tourism sites available all you need to do is search New Zealand. Hope this all helps and sorry no one has been around much :o

How much would a plane ticket cost to fly from the north island to the south island? Do you have any ideas Tygarya? I also want to go to Australia, even if it is for a day, but I probably won't have enough money.

Well it kind of depends how far in advance you book a ticket really, if you give enough notice you only pay about $90 one way for Auckland to Christchurch, but if you do it last minute you could pay up to $200 one way. If your planning on going over to Aussie, best not to go for one day, it just wouldn't be worth the time and effort, a ticket to Brisbane at the moment costs about $299, but you wouldn't see much in one day :)

~Bump~

People must be busy. I had to go to the second page of threads to get here.
Maybe someone here could point me in the right direction. When we travel, my family and I enjoy visiting local grocery stores. Are there any particularly good chains that we should be looking for in NZ? I know when we go to England, we love to go to Tesco and Sommerfields (sp?). Also, what are some good, cheap places to eat? (We are not into fine wine and dining.)
Thanks for all the help!

Well i can't say that many Kiwi's are really into fine wine and dining, so there are some great pubs that do really good meals all over NZ, although you can never go past a good fish n chip takeaways, as for the supermarkets, i guess Pak n Sav and Countdown are the two biggest chains :)
