Oxford Moot 2014: You should come to it! 25th - 27th July

Postby Hobbituk » Mon Jan 13, 2014 11:31 am

It is, apparently, 2014. I'm not sure how that happened. I think someone went around all our houses last night and ripped a few years out of the Calendar. The gits.

Anyway, new year... new Moot planning!

Obligatory Moot Description:

Every summer since 2002, a ragtag, random, rabble of TORCers meet up in the beautiful city of Oxford, Tolkien's home town. We spend the course of a weekend visiting pubs, eating nice food, visiting museums, visiting pubs, going to exhibitions, visiting pubs, punting, wandering around and visiting pubs. We stay in the very gorgeous Keble College (think Hogwarts with more red brick), chat till we can chat no more and laugh long and loudly until people complain about us.

This year will be the THIRTEENTH such event and over the years we've had over a hundred different attendees (by my, probably wrong, reckoning), from all over the world, with numbers generally around the 20 - 30 mark. We're a diverse group, very friendly and laid back. We're not cliquey and we like new people!

More info can be found in this handy FAQ

Original text of this post...

So, the first job is to pick a date. It'd be nice to get this sorted out sooner rather than later. We usually look at dates in July or August, Friday to Sunday.

Please Express Your Interest in coming, and tell us if there any dates that are utterly undoable for you! (We can't suit everyone, but we can try to suit as many as possible).

EDIT - The date has been picked and it will be the 25th - 27th July. Let us know if you're thinking of coming, and do spread the word!

Cheers

You can bet that I will be at this if I can, I'm saving more money this year but if I go out of town for any big thing in 2014 it's going to be this, it was surprisingly inexpensive for me coming up from Bristol and I had a fantastic time, plus I have a much better of the feel of it all for having been once before. My first time was amazing and I'd love to see you all again.

Glad to see this thread has now been posted. :)

Me, me, me! :yippie: I think August would be easier for us - we're going to hopefully be on holiday at the beginning of July, so a decent gap would be good, but as of right now, I don't know of anything that'd stop me (us!) coming. (No job on the horizon as yet. )

We should be there, and don't have any dates that we can't do at the moment, but would slightly prefer the beginning of August. That said I don't know when the graduation weekends are likely to be and Keble has the weekend of the 15th of August greyed out and unavailable just now.

I'm in! :D

There may be a work social trip to Denmark early August, but annoyingly they haven't given us the dates yet. Anyway, if there was a choice I know where I would rather be!

Earlier the better for me! If I don't get in early with my holiday dates I won't get them as everyone wants August (and this year complicated with the trip to Denmark) :)

26/27 July is a possibility for us (only free weekend between the end of April and end of September I think!). We would only day trip though.

Count me in.

I definitely can't do the 15th August weekend.
I hope not to be able to do 25th July weekend.

My work weekend 'outing' to Denmark is 15th so I ought to avoid that if possible. I suppose my vote would be for early August then :)

I've been working on a long-term project with a company in Birmingham. I've gone over a couple times already, with more regular visits to come over the next year. I may well be able to attend, and would love to make the drive down to Oxford if I'm over during the Moot!

Minardil! Goodness me.

And yes, a date soonish would be good; my mother is hassling me because we'll likely be staying with her before/after/during the moot again, and she wants to book as many holidays as possible in 2014, before my inheritance runs out entirely.

Oooh, lots of interest, good good! I'm as keen as anyone to get a date finalised, booking leave at my place is a nightmare. There are already some weekends in July and August which are completely booked out.

Estel - will be nice to see you again, it's been a while!

Minardil - would be great if you could make it!

I really hope I will be able to join you this year, but it's too early for me to say if I can make it or not.

One thing I can say with certainty, is that if the M00t is placed in one of the first two weekends of July, I will not be able to come.

If it turns out to be the last weekend in July (which is the only possible time for me) I would need to know ASAP...because it would mean juggling my flight back to Zambia to include a stop-over in London.

Which would be awesome, but more difficult that it used to be since BA stopped flying to Zambia. The sods.

I'll hope to be along this year - rested and refreshed, and have no preferences re dates at this point. Now I am retired I'm a free agent.

Look forward to seeing you all again in the City of Dreaming Spires.

Maybe a little early yet, we'll see if we can narrow down a shortlist of preferred dates first. Conscious everyone is after an early decision, so how about we aim to get it finalised by the end of the month?

Arphy, you were very much missed last year, so that's brilliant news that you'll be coming again. :)

Any hurray for everyone else too! :yippie:

I vote against the first weekend in July, as all things being well, we should be up in Scotland that weekend. Also, the weekend afterwards might be tricky to get off work if we've been off for the previous one. I prefer the beginning of August, but I'm not fussed. Since I'm looking for new employment, I'd ideally like to get dates locked in before I (hopefully!) get a new job, that way I can tell them when I'm booked. :D
