17th-19th July 2015: The Last Oxford Moot (All welcome)

Postby Hobbituk » Mon Feb 09, 2015 10:59 am

The Last Oxford Moot.

Only kidding. Well maybe. Sort of.

This year's Oxford Moot is the last one I intend to have a hand in organising. Whilst there is not a huge amount involved in putting together our annual Tolkien-themed weekend of booze and chat these days (start a thread, pick a weekend, book a couple of restaurants) I've been involved in doing it to at least some extent every year since 2007.

For various reasons and because now that 'the films' are over and TORC itself has finally become a slumbering beast, I think it best to let someone else take the reigns for any future years, should anyone have the will to do so.

This isn't a flounce, and if an Oxford Moot is being organised, I'll probably be there with bells on. And maybe an unusual hat.

In the meantime I think we should make this year's Oxford Moot one hell of a shindig. To the extent that I am willing to use the word 'shindig' to describe it and I'm only being slightly ironic. Let's make it a belter.

If you've ever considered coming but always put it off, make THIS the year. Everyone is welcome.

Please express interest and preference for a weekend this summer.... NOW.

Well, poop. There is no way I can make it this year. My daughter is expecting at end of July/beginning of August and that is where I will be, before I fly back to Zambia. My impending grandmotherhood must take precedence over a Moot, yea, verily, even such a Moot as this.

So I hope it is not really, truly the LAST one...and I hope it's a blast!

Interest well and truly expressed. :)

Right now I don't have any preferences for weekends, although I would say that Fridays during the summer at my work get booked up pretty quickly, and I'd rather not to have to arrive at midnight on a Friday again, so I'd rather have a decision made as quickly as possible. :)

With that in mind, I've looked up the graduation dates for this summer for Oxford University. Here are the relevant ones:

Saturday 11 July 2015 (11:00; 14:00; 16:30)
Monday 20 July 2015 (11:00 and 14:30)
Tuesday 21 July 2015 (11:00 and 14:30)
Wednesday 22 July 2015 (11:00 only)
Friday 24 July 2015 (11:00 and 14:30)
Saturday 25 July 2015 (11:00; 14:00; 16:30)
Monday 27 July 2015 (14:30 only)
Friday 31 July 2015 (11:00 and 14:30)
Saturday 1 August 2015 (11:00 and 14:30)

So, from that, I'd suggest that provisionally the best weekends would be July 4th and 18th and any weekend from August 8th onwards.

Jewelsong, I can understand impending grandmotherhood taking precedence, but you will be missed!

Shows how long it's been since I was here, I looked for the 'like' button for the last wee bit of your post there, Jon. :D

Of the top of my head, the second two of Heliona's suggested dates would probably suit me better, but I'll have to check my work calendar to be sure.

I don't mind doing some of the organising again, assuming we'll still want to stay at Keble? I'm also happy to do some for the moot after the 'last moot' too.

I, too, am happy to help out with organising. The only reason I didn't last time was because I wasn't sure what I was doing with work, but as I now have a permanent contract, that's that problem solved. :)

Last one?! You shouldn't scare people so, Hobbi! ;) :P Still, successful wake-up call. :)

No time constraints here at the moment, but I can't say either way yet - will just have to see what date is picked and where we are then. :)

Well, hopefully, the Oxford Moots will continue past this year!

Rodia, I actually had hotels booked for my proposed week in Poland (remember?) but had to cancel them due to my daughter's knocked-up condition! Seriously, I am thrilled beyond words!

Wilko, I am expecting you to step up after Dean's tenure as Moot Coordinator.

No way in hell I'll make it this year. :(

I have tickets for two games of the Rugby World Cup, so I'll be travelling to London twice in October, and the Sterling/Euro exchange is appalling. Actually, since the exchange rate is so bad, I recommend that we have the Oxford Moot in Ireland this year!

Hooray for the people who have expressed interest so far, and commiserations to those who would like to come but can't, and congratulations to JewelSong :)

The weekends of the 4th and the 18th appear to be the favourites so far. I'll leave it a couple of days before we make a decision though, so keep shouting out :)

I'm going to make an effort this year, but who am I kidding, it probably won't work. I'll be there in spirit.

July 4th is a holiday in the States, as some of you on the other side of the pond may know, so it's a double-edged sword - easier to get away, but probably more expensive to travel. Still, I'll put, like, 1/4 of a vote for it.

It seems that Bardy is doing a gig on the 4th of July, so if she was planning on coming (and of course, she usually does :) ), I'd guess that that date was no doable for her.

(Just for info. :) )

bumpity bump

So, ideally, I'd like this date nailed down as fast as possible, because summer holiday time disappears ridiculously fast at my work.

I think that the 18th July is the best weekend so far, since Bardy can't make the 4th of July. I'd rather it not be in August, to be honest, since I'd like to be away on holiday then.

An Oxford M00t is high on my 'bucket list' of things to do, but coming from the States that's a bit of planning since I'd combine it will a longer visit to the UK/Europe. Also, I'll be having surgery sometime soon (no date booked yet) so I can't make any plans until I find out more about that and find out how long recovery is going to take.

If nothing else, I definitely will be there in spirit and hope to be there in person some year SOON! :grouphug:

This is the ONE weekend over the summer when I don't have something pre-planned.

I *could* come. I could fly to London for the weekend and come to the Last Oxford Moot That Will Be Run by Hobbituk.

I *could* do that.
