Membership totals for Different Alliances

Come on over to Tom's House for the lighter side of Tolkien Fandom. Remember Tom's House is both powerful and innocent, so keep it clean and nice.

Postby Denethor » Sun Jun 17, 2001 7:22 pm

Here are the membership totals for the various alliances. They have no doubt changed slightly since I counted them, but here they are anyway...

1. The Shire - 137
2. Lothlorien - 117
3. Mordor - 91
4. Gondor -83
5. House of Earendil - 71
6. Rohan - 65
7. Durin's Folk - 60
8. Mirkwood - 54
9. House of Feanor - 49
10=Valinor - 48
10=Minas Morgul - 48
12.House of Fingolfin - 45
13=Grey Havens - 44
13=Imladris - 44
15=House of Gil-Galad - 39
15=Saruman - 39
17.House of Elwe - 30
18.Dol Amroth - 29
19=Stewards of Gondor - 27
19=House of Finrod Felagund - 27
21.Haradrim - 26
22.House of Beor - 23
23.House of Finwe - 22
24.House of Hador - 20
25.Dale - 19
26.House of Haleth - 11
27.Easterlings - 9
28.Angband - 7

Here are how the numbers have changed since the last census, conducted by Gilglar on 4th February 2001. The alliances are ranked in terms of the gains they have made.

1. The Shire - +74
2. Lothlorien - +66
3. Mordor - +44
4. House of Earendil - +40
5. Durin's Folk - +36
6. Mirkwood - +35
7. Valinor - +34
8. Gondor - +29
9. Rohan - +28
10.Minas Morgul - +27
11.Grey Havens - +24
12.Saruman - +23
13.Imladris - +22
14=House of Fingolfin - +19
14=House of Feanor - +19
16.House of Gil-Galad - +18
17.Haradrim - +15
18=House of Hador - +14
18=House of Elwe - +14
20=Dol Amroth - +12
20=House of Finrod Felagund - +12
22=House of Finwe - +11
22=Dale - +11
22=House of Beor - +11
25.Angband - +7
26.Stewards of Gondor - +4
27.House of Haleth - +3
28.Easterlings - +2

Translating this into peoples of Middle-Earth gives the following...

Elves (includes Earendil, Mirkwood) - 542
Men (both 'Good' and 'Evil') - 312
Hobbits - 137
Dwarves - 60
Ainur (Valinor) - 48
Orcs (Morgul, Angband, Mordor, Saruman) - 185

Overall the figures are...
"Good" Alliances - 1064
"Evil" Alliances - 220

I didn't count the people under the two "default" alliances or under a Tolkien Online Alliance. These figures include people who never post, double identities etc so they are not an ideal indication. Overall TORC membership has almost doubled since the last time I did an alliance census (27th December 2000) so this count certainly took a while!

Other comments:
1. There has been a huge increase in the number of Dwarves. Historically Durin's Folk has been one of the smaller alliances, but it now seems that the "Dwarf Shortage" is over (no pun intended).

2. Minas Morgul has also seen quite a big improvement (historically it too has been quite a small alliance).

3. It seems that the Stewards need to do a bit of advertising. Our numbers have only increased by a tiny amount since last time (indeed the only alliances who gained less are the historically tiny alliances of Haleth and the Easterlings).

4. Angband has only recently be added, so the fact that it is currently in 28th place isn't a good indication.

5. The House of Earendil seems to have benefited from the creation of the Mariner's Guild.

6. The Shire and Lothlorien remain numbers 1 and 2 respectively, but Mordor has now pushed Gondor into 4th place despite the creation of Sir Elwood's Knights of Gondor Guild.

Nice bit of work there, Denethor. Nice to see some statistics... although I do have one small bone to pick with you: why have you labelled everyone from the evil Alliances as 'Orcs'? I certainly don't consider myself one or even roleplay as one, so I feel that is an innacurate generalization on your part at best. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif"border=0>

I put Minas Morgul, Saruman, Mordor, and Angband under the heading of "Orcs" because it was the most convenient. There are several problems when trying to put these alliances under particular headings, and the Orcs issue is one of them. Mirkwood also poses similar problems - I put it under the "Elves", although technically Mirkwood would include the Woodmen, Radagast etc (perhaps the Spiders as well). The House of Earendil of course also poses major problems - even the Valar had trouble trying to work out whether they were Elves or Men! I decided to put them under 'Elves' since Earendil himself chose to be considered an Elf. So basically the Orcs decision was another of these arbitrary decisions that had to be made.

Yes, with 6900 TORC members it did take a long time! TORC membership is growing so fast that I suspect that future censuses will have to be done by a combination of two or three people rather than by just one person. I might have to start a guild of census takers! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0><img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0><img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

Denethor ... nice piece of work.

Just one question though ... why not include an 'other' for the Tolkien Online Members and those of us using the defaults (we are members too!) as there are quite a few of us and not everyone has a double identity. I certainly do not. And the default seems to fit my character name nicely. Just a suggestion.

Again ... nice work!
I hate to break the news to you, Drogo, but Buckland was on the border of the Old Forest, not Mirkwood... which happens to be 625 miles away in Rhovanion, not Eriador. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif"border=0>

And Isildursheir, thanks for not considering me an Orc, but I am not a man either... <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

I'm just curious, is this everyone or is it just the active people? If it's everyone, I'd be interested in seeing the active lists.

These figures include EVERYONE - even those with a post count of zero. It would be a bit difficult to compile a list of 'active' members, since how do you define 'active'? By post count, time or a combination of the two? And then you have the problem of those otherwise 'active' TORC members who don't really get actively involved in the Alliance and Guild discussions.

Denethor, while I applaud all of your hard work and certainly do appreciate it, I echo Idril's question.

While default is certainly not the label that I would choose, the idea behind it is. I belong to no alliance nor any guild for that matter. I have been unallied since the inception of the alliances and have never wavered from my stance and think it is a bit unfair that because some of us choose to be unallied, we are being labeled as not worth counting. Yes, new arrivials are automatically labeled as a default, and many of them choose alliances once they find out how to do it.

I hope that in the future when another census is taken the unallied will be counted and that someday the label default is changed on the profile page to unallied.

I also ask this question again, though it does not belong here....why do the unallied need two different figures just to denote the sex of the poster? None of the other alliances have this...or does it not matter to those who have chosen alliances?

Denethor: The Part where it says of the ORCS. The Minas Morguls are NOT Orcs..... This is a serious mistake. (I know your reason.)

the AMMM's contribution to the Dark-Side is endless.

Lord V.

Denethor, what a thorough piece of work! Excellent, well done, bravo, pat-on-the-back, hidee-ho, rah-rah, etc., and so on!

I wonder what this place will look like in six months?

We should all pause and consider Lord Denethor's census. Imagine what TORC will be like in six months. We are all a part of a community that is unique and wonderous. From across the globe we gather and converse and laugh, and hug, and fight, and fume, and, and, and, well, you know all the ands!

This community, you, ladies and gentlemen, and "orcs"... couldn't help meself B_D,.. have entwined with my soul in an incredibly meaningful way. Thank you.

When the films blast onto the scene, and Tolkien mania becomes "mainstream",.. what will each of us become then? How will it change TORC? What will the new fans, the ones whose reference point is the films and not the literate opus of Papa Tolkien,.. what will they think of this phenomenon we are priviledged to call "home"?

Make today wonderful!

Awesome Denethor. My only curiosity is if there are more male or female unallied. I think that would be interesting. However, the page did not finish loading completely, about the last five posts seem to be cut off. Anyway, so maybe it was already answered. If it is a lot of work then don't worry.
