Cinco de Mayo

Feliz Cinco de Mayo!

I learned few things about this holiday, which is tomorrow.

It recalls the Battle of Puebla (1862), in Southern Mexico. Juarez's government was broke and suspended payment of debts for two(?) years. Other creditors worked something out with Mexico, but France saw a chance to get a foothold, again, in the Western Hemisphere, and decided to invade.

The French Army--one of the best at that time--was defeated at Puebla by a Mexican Army half its size. Eventually, France did establish a short-lived "Empire" in Mexico, with Maximillian, but there is a feeling among some historians that the delay in taking over Mexico, caused by the battle, meant that France did not have the opportunity to help the South (as much) in the Civil War. France's help might have been decisive in the early days of the War.

Apparently Mexican miners in CA heard about the victory and celebrated right away, and celebrations have been common in the US, since. They are rare in Mexico.

Have a Dos Equis in memory of Puebla!

Sequels are seldom as good as the original.
