Disney buys Lucasfilm, new SW film planned

Postby Telemachos » Tue Oct 30, 2012 1:20 pm

No, it's not April Fools (several months late).

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/disney-buy-lucasfilm-405-billion-384448

To briefly sum up the article: Disney is buying Lucasfilm and all LFL's assets, including Star Wars, Indiana Jones, etc for $4 billion. There are plans to make Star Wars: Episode 7 by 2015 (although this date seems very optimistic to me).

Here are my reactions in order:

1: What?

2: What.

3: What!

4: Well, if Lucas is just going to be a creative consultant and not a writer/director, then a new Star Wars film might not turn out so bad.

Well, despite what Lucas might say today, he never planned out the whole Star Wars saga as "the Story of Darth Vader's Fall and Redemption" back in the 70s. Like Tolkien, he (and collaborators) made up the story as he went along. So tacking on a new trilogy would just follow the "continuing adventures" serial-movie sense that he originally worked with.

I was very surprised. It would have seemed just as likely that a buy-out would be the other way around.

I checked Google.com and they have a cute Halloween animation. I half expected to see something like Chewbacca with mouse ears.

I hope that, if Disney makes SW 7, 8 and 9, that they do not "Disney-fy" it.

It's very surprising... but actually I have some hope that the new movies could be good. Lucas's strength, IMO, has always been his general mythic sensibility and overall universe creation. Where he got into trouble was actual specifics and then putting the time and energy needed to acquire meaningful, strong performances.

So, depending on who ends up being involved with the project, it could be the best of both worlds (like what happened with EMPIRE STRIKES BACK): new writers and directors get to tell their story, and Lucas can approve the general concepts.

Of course, it could end up being a cynical cash grab or a generically lousy, muddled, mediocre movie too. But right now, I prefer to be optimistic. :)

I'll support this, but only if they still play the Fox fanfare at the begining of every film.

I recently posted this on Facebook and was reminded that it was Disney that got Joss Whedon to do Avengers and knocked it out of the park. Maybe this wouldn't be a bad idea, but I would prefer if Lucas were kept well clear of the project. His hubris is the main thing that make episodes 1 through 3 suck. That and awful acting

Consider that the best Star Wars film was made without Lucas as a director or scriptwriter - I think the Disney move might well be a good thing. Their Marvel films have been fantastic.

Now if only they can get Peter Jackson to direct...

I think Lucas missed his path in life. He should have become a used cars salesman. He would have made a fortune.

Oh... I suppose he did.

I've kind of lost touch with disney these last fifteen years. Maybe they are the ones to revive Star Wars?

Maybe not?

To this day, how many decades later?, everytime I hear that fanfare a little part of me still expects to see a vast starfield and a huge ship intruding upon it. Imprinting, maybe?

Just so they don't replace Princess Leia with Mary Poppins. And Lucas did once say he wanted a nine-series of Star Wars. I'd be interested to see episodes 7-9.

They have done a great job as owners of Marvel.

Not so great with John Carter though - a good film (Arphy will disagree, no doubt) that was destroyed by a rubbish marketing department.

Well, the Pirates of the Carribean movies are Disney and they turned out fine. Not perfect, of course, but I'd take any one of them over Episode II any day of the week. And Star Wars projects have succeeded in other areas with different people at the helm, such as the 2003 Clone Wars animated series, several different video games, and numerous books. As long as Disney gets competent writers and directors for the new trilogy, and they can, there's no real reason to worry at all.

And I can't believe how fast that 'Mickey and the gang as Star Wars characters' joke got old. Is that really the best the internet can do with this? Disappointing. :nono:

I hardly thinking you're giving Lucas his dues there and you're vastly over-estimating Disney's impact on the Marvel films. The recent Marvel films have still been made "in-house" by Marvel studios, while being distributed by Disney. They've actually been more "Marvel" than the early co-productions of the early 2000s which weren't exclusively Marvel productions. Not the same situation as Pirates of the Caribbean which is actually made by Walt Disney Studios. As I understand it will still be Lucasfilm with GL as a creative consultant making the next Star Wars film - Disney will be distributing and controlling the purse strings, I expect.

Here's something that happened when Lucas' hand was not on the helm. Something he would like to forget.

Something the entire cast would like to forget.

The first PotC was great. The second, boring, the third was awful. Didn't even bother watching the fourth.

The fourth one had Ian McShane in it, which made it worth watching at least once to me.

Geoffrey Rush usually isn't bad, either, but this time I think he was off his game. Or just cruddy script.

So... Disney hasn't bought Middle-Earth Enterprises? And there isn't going to be a fourth Lord of the Rings movie? :-| Because my friend and I are really freaked out about this.

They have announced the Cast for Star Wars VII

http://www.ign.com/articles/2014/04/29/ ... -announced

Andy Serkis is in it! :D
Though, I really don't know any of the other cast members besides the ones from the older trilogy.

So I know a guy who is a well known 'fixer' (a bit like an agent for pro singers) who is in talks with Disney to provide singers for the new SW soundtrack. I've been hassling him for about 8 months, and a couple of weeks ago I managed to corner him, sang right in his face, and asked outright to join the choir. :D

He said yes, but that he couldn't guarantee me any work.

Here's hoping!!

...Or I might have to go have another chat with him... :club: :D

I know the boy (now young man!) soloist on the ROTK soundtrack, and I haven't forgiven him for landing that gig for 13 years :P
