Movies That Will Stand the Test of Time ...

Postby siddharth » Sat Nov 09, 2013 12:27 am

Which movies do you think will be remembered and enjoyed by many for the next many generations?

of course, movies like Gone With the Wind, Casablanca, Godfather series, Star Wars, Citizen kane etc. have already stood the test of time and will make it to the list of most of you, I guess.
So I am specifically keen to see more recent movies (i.e 1990s-2013). Which films in your opinion will be considered as grand 30-40 years from now, as they are at present?

I have to think harder to get up a list ...

Lets see....that's a different question than which movies would I prefer stood the test of time because I personally, think they're really good. I mean, I thought movies like Pan's Labyrinth and Children of Men were great great movies because they appeal to my tastes but neither was tremendously popular with the general public and while they probably won't fade away entirely, they won't be remembered as "classics" either.

I'm going to say Blade Runner as the first movie that comes to mind that has the right combination of popularity and quality that I think it takes for a movie to be remembered for a long time to come. It's not really one of my all time favorites movies, but enough people already consider it a classic and a landmark science fiction movie, that I think it will always show up on someone's list.

What about Life of Pi? Too soon to tell?

OTOH, it occurred to me that some movies are not popular when they're first released but become classics over time.

Can I guess LOTR? I mean its already lasted like 10 years, so why not another 20+ years. And its already considered a classic :) As for other movies......... hmmmm, I'm not certain. Maybe The Hunger Games, but it maybe to soon to say.

Very true Glasshouse. Disney's Phantasia was a flop when it was released (over 60 years ago!) and now it's considered a masterpiece.
Not sure about Life of Pi yet. It's a technical marvel for sure. And spiritually it has a lot to make it a near classic (though, nowhere near the book) but I found it has a low rewatchability value. As I found it quite less interesting on the 3rd viewing. Time will tell.

Well, LotR is definitely on my list. Since it has got the critical consensus and even after 13 years, no fantasy movie has reached the high bar it has set. Whether cinematically or technically.

Prisoner of Azkaban as well, could be there. Has got the critical praise and public popularity (especially among the young gen) for being remembered for a while.

I also choose the first two films of the Dark Knight Trilogy. Lots of achievements there, limited not only to the technical marvel. particularly The Dark Knight for the legendary performance by Heath Ledger as the Joker. If not the film, his Joker would stand the test of time I can say.

I think Saving Private Ryan should be there too. Even though I do not like it much.

I thought of another possible one. The Jurassic Park series I think could be considered a classic, the special effects are still pretty good, and the story line is so original that nothing else is really like it. I think that could stand a fair chance against time:)

I think Jurassic Park-I has a fair chance. Much like how jaws is today.
Post Jurassic Park, and every film involving a reptillian monster went with the raptor or T-rex style effects. That's a lot of influence.

Some of the older films achieved classic status because they were part of packages sold to early TV networks and were on fairly frequent rotation and so became better known than some better films that were not on TV.

For newer movies Pirates of the Caribbean, the Harry Potter movies, Amelie, and Pan's Labyrinth come to mind.

The first one maybe - the sequels get progressively more awful.

How about Gladiator, Apollo 13, Terminator 1 & 2, Alien and Aliens, and (throwing in a wild card here) Dredd?

And I'm hoping that Love, Actually will become a Christmas classic.

I'm hoping that some billionaire hunts down every last copy of that film, puts them in an old space shuttle and fires it into the sun.

One of the older movies I can think of that will stand the test of time and is one of my favourites is
"Some like it Hot". The main cast have left this life but their contribution to the making of this movie is recorded for future generations. The same can be said for other films from the era and earlier.

For the most up-to-date movies this is what I came up with

The Shawshank Redemption
Forest Gump
Toy Story 1,2 and 3 :D
Lord Of The Rings
Indiana Jones(maybe)
Jurassic Park(perhaps)

A random lucky seven (extended version)

The Usual Suspects
LA Confidential
Everything by Ken Loach (but especially Land and Freedom)
Downfall
Gran Torino
Lagaan
Stalker and Andrei Rublev

Unfortunately, some of those don't really fit the criteria of recent movies, but I think it's useful to mix the old with the new, for contrast... :P

It's hard to say. Perhaps it's not so much for the movies themselves but their accesibility. A person who is interested in XXI. cinematography will perhaps have more ways to obtain a copy of a movie, everything else depends on their taste. Point being that it can be both LOTR/Schindler/or any other movie including e.c. Andreii Tarkovsky's works (as it was well noted before :))
Now I wish I had a copy of Love, Actually. damn, that's a good one and I love Emma Thompson's work in it.

I agree with most of the suggestions already made but would like to add Tree of Life, both in terms of my preferences and from an objective perspective.
