The Shannara Chronicles

Postby notlistening » Mon Aug 31, 2015 7:19 pm

I recently saw a trailer for the MTV produced Shannara Chronicles, based on what looks like The Elfstones of Shannara. This is my favourite Terry Brooks books and from what friends who have seen screenings of episode 1 have said, it is quite good. The PG version of GOT, it has been said. I just hope they do a better job than the sadly failed attempt of the Seeker books.

Bump

I have seen a few promos for it.
It's supposed to begin (1/6) at 10pm.
I checked and it's on On Demand.

I've read all the Shannara books and enjoyed them.
I'll let you know what I think of it.

ETA...
Ok, I tried to watch this last night.
Couldn't get into it very much because they broke for a commercial every 5-6 minutes.
I'll check it out on On Demand later.
Maybe there won't be so many breaks.
What I did see of it, I was not all that impressed.
But I'll give it another go just to give it a fair chance,

Really enjoyed Shannara. They did an excellent job with the story so far. Casting is good, except Jonathon Rhys Davies is too bulky to be an elf IMHO. NZ is the perfect place for fantasy show making and doesn't disappoint here. As this is based on just one book they will be able to do it justice I think. GOT and Legend of the seeker are set across many books making it harder I think to really satisfy fans (well maybe not the GOT's but GRRM will die before he finishes at this rate.)

There are some very Ringsy things in it. The elven palace reminds me of Minas Tirith and obviously being shot in NZ makes it feel similar. Brooks is a Tolkien wanna-be of sorts, but if you have to imitate, why not the best?

Looking forward to the rest of it.

IIRC, the reason they went with adapting Elfstones rather than Sword is that they were worried (and not without reason) that there might be some legal action from the Tolkien Estate.

This will be exciting to see.
I remember reading The Sword of Shannara and being
captivated by the plot.
...Sadly, life pulled me away from that world, but with a little
more time on my hands, I look forward to revisiting that world.
