Hello, I just signed up so I can join this conversation and say:
You people are all very clever to figure or all this information, and I'd like to say that as a reader, I really appreciate such a friendly atmosphere on a forum... Keep up the great work you guys!

Now for my opinion on the matter. I am glad things are, personally. The plot is well balanced, And Legolas' charm isn't... hindered? Not sure if that's a good word for it, but for me, part of his character's wonder is being mysterious, leaving lots of room for imaginaion in his past, present emotions and thoughts, and a future for fan fiction writers/dreamers to invent.

anyway, very interesing thread... Thanks for posing the question, I really enjoyed reading :)

Mithluin wrote:Legolas did not marry between the Quest and leaving for Valinor, because the event that allowed him to part with Middle Earth was the death of Aragorn. If Legolas had married, his marriage would be a much more important relationship that his friendship with King Elessar, and would serve to tie him to Middle Earth. (Of course, any hypothetical 'wife' would have taken ship with him, but his desire to build a ship would be lessened, I think).

Pardon my bringing up something from years ago. ;) Except that this is not always the case, that husbands and wives remain in ME together . . . Celebrian, Elrond's wife, left Middle Earth long before Elrond did, and Galadriel left before Celeborn did.

That said, such a thing would have definitely distracted from the story of the movie or book.

But then, what difference does it make, he already has so many girls chasing after him already.

Legolas?? Oh heck no. He's mine. JK. I don't think that it would play out that well. After all...we barely see him except when he's tracking and fighting in battle scenes. Legolas is probably, for the time being, better off single.

For the time being? Tolkien never intended for him to have a wife or love interest of any kind, so I think that seals the deal. ;)

Who would the girls swoon over if Legolas belonged to someone else (not that it would stop anyone)?

Plus, I really liked the way that Legolas and Gimli's friendship grew. It was much more fun to me.

Legolas? With a girlfriend?

No, he couldn't get a girlfriend. 'A' he wouldn't want one. And 'B' he's too high matinance to get one.

I imagine in the Undying Land there was probably a lot of action. Who's going to bother with monogamy if you have eternity?

good point silverberry! It wouldn't last long. I'd bet she'd be exactly like him. They'd probably fight a lot and end it over something silly.

Doesn't it say somewhere in the 2nd book, I think, a quote from Legolas that goes something like "never have I felt such joy since I walked with my children" (I read the book in Swedish so this is freely translated). Doesn't that imply he indeed did have a wife?

Hmmm...I really couldn't see him married. I think he was speaking figuratively. But then, I'm no expert.

There's a mistake in the old Swedish translation that totally changes Legolas's line. In the original English, he says (about the Fangorn Forest): " It is old, very old. So old that almost I feel young again, as I have not felt since I journeyed with you children. (...)" (bolding mine)

So, it was not his own children that Leggy was talking about; he was calling the other members of the Fellowship "children". After all, they were at least several hundred years, maybe even several thousand, younger than he was.

i would rather secretly kill the girl; it would ruin the films, but we can do whatever in our personal fan fiction (evil laugh)

Yeah, for me I would've been scared REALLY bad! It's just too much love and relationships.
