Actually, I've heard that the following scene was cut from the TE because PJ feared the swooners'outrage:

ARAGORN: Keep him blind to all else that moves.
LEGOLAS: A diversion!
EOMER: Of course it's a diversion. We get it. Do I look like a fool?
LEGOLAS: Er...no, I was just...
Eomer repeatedly punches him in the face. Legolas goes down.
Legolas has fans?

Seriously, erm...the way Leggy was portrayed in the films, he was pretty super-heroish. Any changes made to that might have come across unbelievable (like the mumakil was believable).

Also, consider the number of storylines all ready on the go, and the lack of closure of injuries of canon (ie, Merry, Eowyn) I think anymore might have just irritated me, more than anything.

I have no emotional connection to leggy, like I do towards the Hobbits or even men. His character just wasn't put forward in that manner, and I doubt I would have cared enough.

Thought on the other hand, it could've shown how high the stakes were (ala the elves at Helms Deep).

Hehe... kidding, just messing with you <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

Actually I have some perfect reasons for those reactions:
If there was such scene, that meant PJ had messed with the story (again). Due to my inability to find any justification for this kind of change, I'd be shocked, then feel outraged.

... Then I'd realize that there was NO WAY Legolas was killed off, nor would he receive unrecoverable injury for real. So I'd sit back and enjoy the show. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> Make any sense?

After some thought, I'm moving this over to Fandom. "What if" scenarios involving individual actors/characters seems better placed here than in Movies.

Besides, it'll break up the monotony of the teeming mass of swoon threads.

Thanks, Crispy!<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

BTW, I_Dan, why would Pete possibly have not "killed off" Legolas or had him injured? He had Haldir killed. Just a thought.<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> Not that I would've wanted it to happen! This is just a speculative question. And, I'm speaking of him only being injured.

C'mon now, I KNOW that there are people out there who like Legolas!<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-rolleyes.gif"border=0>

~Nim~

I used to like him a lot. Now only in certain pictures do I think he looks nice.

But as for killing him off, for me, it's more a question of canon. He was NOT killed off. He has to build his boat and go into the West with Gimli. Haldir one doesn't really care much about. He was in FOTR and then we never saw him again. (the book).

I would be more mad with PJ killing the canon of Leggy not being killed or severely injured, and not really from a fan-girl perspective. I am not a Fan Girl. Not any more. Nor an I a Mary-Sue any more. *twitches at the mere typing of that name*

I'm here, Nim! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0> (It's probably much better that you got this moved to Fandom. The Movies thread will likely just tear it to pieces. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-rolleyes.gif"border=0>)

Not having read the books before the movie (<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-blush.gif"border=0>), wanting to know what happened to Legolas was the major motivation for me to read the books. There was no way I was going to wait for 2 years to find out.

Now that I've read them several times, Legolas is even more special to me, and I would've been extremely upset if PJ had either seriously injured or killed him. I can remember being anxious that he would choose to do either one in TTT or in ROTK. I was sort of holding my breath, though I thought things would be okay since he killed Haldir off in TTT. (My thought being, "Well, he's killed his Elf, so he should leave Legolas alone." <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>)

It would've been a huge departure from the book for PJ to portray Legolas in anything other than an heroic light. Sure, he could have chosen to do so (just look at Faramir! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif"border=0>), but it was easier to do that with the human characters rather than with the Elven characters. He really caught Tolkien's vision for them in portraying them as, well, really cool. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

(Of course, you and I have talked about the fact that we would've liked PJ to make Legolas' character more like the book, with his singing, lightheartedness, and the like. He wasn't a Vulcan, for crying out loud, but, I digress.)

So I would've been highly distressed to see PJ have Legolas get killed or seriously wounded. (I'll refrain from commenting on the fact that I wouldn't have minded nursing him back to health, though. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0> <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0> <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-devil.gif"border=0>)

Lalaith

I have to say I would be really really super mad if they would have done anything like that to Legolas. I mean, he doesn't die in the books! Or get injured, for that matter. That really would have messed things up. I probably would have shot an arrow into the theater screen, ruining it forever. Hmm, I think I would have been stunned first and then seriously outraged. First because of my huge appreciation of Legolas and secondly because of the book. I do not resent the changes PJ has made to the story. I may not like some (Faramir in TTT's theatrical version for example) but I can live with those because FOTR lead me to the book so I can't really be mad at the movies.

But this would be a change that I would hate. The Elves in LOTR are so utterly superior that it would be unlogical. In the context of the Sil it would be another matter.

And another thought that just crossed my mind. Although we, Legolas fans would like it to be otherwise, to tell the truth Legolas' part in LOTR was not the biggest (the unfortunate "He probably accomplished the least of the Fellowship" with what I don't agree) and to have him injured and then cured would have taken space and extra effort in the text of the story and it was easier for JRR to have him not hurt since then you didn't have to tell of how he got injured and of the recovery. The same would go to PJ too considering the miraculous and rapid Merry recovery (wow, Hobbits must be the best of healers considering the Pippin "I will take care of you" line<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>)
Just some idle speculation.

<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-rolleyes.gif"border=0> Aurelin <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-rolleyes.gif"border=0>

I saw FOTR before I read the books, so if he had killed Legolas then, it wouldn't have been such a big deal. Yeah, I'd be sad, but that's only because I thought Legolas was extremely hot ! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0> But after reading the books, it would've been a little different. Besides being sad for Legolas and for his thousands of fan-girls, I would've been mad at PJ for taking even more liberty with Tolkien's actual works.

I just realized that if it weren't for Legolas, my best friend never would've watched LOTR! She really didn't want to watch it at all, but then I told her that there was a really hot guy who played one of the Elves, and she changed her mind. So thank you, Legolas/Orlando, and if PJ had injured/killed you, there would probably be one less LOTR fan in this world! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

He could've done almost anything with Legolas. Maybe not killed him off, but he could've dreamed up something different, you know? Gosh, I'm almost making it sound as if I WISH something had happened to him. That's not what I mean. This is purely speculation. And, be it known here and now that I am ecstatically happy with the movies. No complaints. LOL Nar! That's great! Yeah, poor Legolas doesn't have very many non-obvious lines. Mostly just a lot of "Goblins!" Orcs!" Crebain!" etc... And then the best one..."A diversion." Okay heres the deal:
first of all, Legolas, awesome as he is, is WAY too pretty to be a warrior. He never even gets scratched! then again, he is an elf...
second, I agree: any hurting of Lego-man would definately hurt the movie, and all the little girls who love him. (He is, however, somehow, my favorite character.)

so there !!!<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>
