<b>laureanna</b>, that is an interesting post of yours! I would say the Books (Tolkien) Forum is the best place to post that!

A couple of links I don't see already:<BR><BR>A good <a href='http://www.quicksilver899.com/Tolkien/Tolkien_Dictionary.html' target=_blank>Tolkien dictionary</a>, which includes all words from the LOTR and Sil indices, and tries to provide full etymologies, from Q, S, Anglo-Saxon, etc. Some of the derivations are a bit speculative, but the site does cite its sources, from the Etymologies or wherever.<BR><BR>I'm not sure about the two essays included in the site, they strike me as VERY speculative <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><BR><BR>Speaking of which ... <BR><BR>An essay entitled <a href='http://www.stanmcdaniel.com/hobbit/hobbit.htm' target=_blank>The Philosophical Etymology of Hobbit</a>, employing the author's interesting if far-out concept of <a href='http://www.stanmcdaniel.com/hobbit/eidofram.htm' target=_blank>"eidophonetics"</a>. I don't know where to file this one... under languages, philosophy, philology... you decide <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><BR>

A (relatively) new and fairly comprehensive Tolkien map site can be found at http://lotrmaps.middle-earth.us/index.p ... &page=Maps<BR><BR><a href='http://lotrmaps.middle-earth.us/index.php?tab=maps&page=Maps' target=_blank>Lord of the Rings Maps</a>.<BR><BR>Despite the name, it includes maps for the <em>Silmarillion, Hobbit</em> and some of the maps from HOME. Some maps from Fonstad and Strachey can be found in <a href='http://lotrmaps.middle-earth.us/index.php?tab=maps&page=Map sets' target=_blank>Map Sets</a> http://lotrmaps.middle-earth.us/index.p ... s&page=Map sets

Parador, I'm afraid the links to the map sites (at least most of them) don't work any longer. There were some copyright issues, and the sites had to be taken down; there's more about the subject in this discussion in another site.

Thank-you Rowanberry...

Did the copy right issues have to do with the site creators themselves because they didn't have permission to use the maps?

I'm sure the answer lies within the discussion link you gave me...I'll check-it-out...thank-you again, Rowanberry :)

***Edit: The discussion board answered my question

I understand what Mr. Martinez is saying about his works being sold or the works from his website, this being a copyright violation...but Tolkien maps are not being sold through the Tolkien Internet websites...yes, I suppose it kept people from purchasing maps of Middle-earth if all they had to do was go to the Internet. Of course it is not the ONLY reason Tolkien Enterprise did this if for that reason at all...

*sigh*...I can say all this in defense of those using the maps online...but the bottom line: it is a copyright violation no matter how we look at it.

Such is life :|

Updating all this week! 6/6/05

Postby Parador~J » Sun Jun 05, 2005 11:56 am

Mae Govannen Virtual scholars :)

I know it has been awhile...I've really missed this place and all of you :cry2:

It's just my priorities have changed these last few years. We come and make ourselves at home for a while...and then leave for a while...and then come back again. No one can truely leave this place for an indefinite period of time...it's like coming back home after being away for reasons only known to ourselves.

Working on some updates this coming week...I'll be off from work and school.

I'm going to find this hard to update using this format...need to get aquainted with it. I may just copy and paste it to Word Doc. and update there...and then c/p it back to the thread...

I hope everyone is doing great! I see we have a Beowulf study group going...well done 8) I have a 1921 copy of Beowulf...it sets with the rest of my Tolkien collection. I would love to get a copy of 'Tolkien's Beowulf and the Critics'.

I'll have to look for some Beowulf websites...;)

Overhaul

Postby Parador~J » Mon Jun 06, 2005 12:47 pm

When I had hit the submit button after doing some editing on the very first page that housed the library links...I was shocked to see that I had a mess on my hands :woah:

This original format or program that TORC had back in 2002 was what the Library links and text were under. Now that the forum has changed (and that is not a bad thing!)...I'm going to have to redo the Library.

I copy and pasted what was there...this way I can build it again with all the links and info I have. I plan on adding to it with any new stuff that is out on the web :)

I'll be working on this all week! Hope to have it up and going by then...

It is so wonderful to see you after so long! (Novice, here, btw) I hope life is treating you as it should. My priorities have re-arranged as well, so I'm not the constant presence I used to be. But life is good. And TORC goes on. :)

Wow!!! I was so happy to see your post Novice...Impenitent  :D

I'm so glad you are still around 8)

Yes...life has a way of changing from one year to the next. But I don't think any one of us leaves indefinitely

I hope to be around for a little bit this summer...while school is out. But I still have a heavy load of projects to work on even for this summer. Then back to school this Fall.

Great to hear from you Novice! (I have to get used to your new name, aye?) heheh:)

Getting there!

Postby Parador~J » Wed Jun 15, 2005 8:56 pm

Well...I've got the introduction put back...and I realized that this is not going to be as hard to do as I thought it would be 8)

I'll be working on this the rest of the week. I kind of dragged my feet last week because I was dreading the work that lay ahead...but once I got started I saw that it would turn out after all. Just a lot of work putting the links back in and adding some new ones...and structuring it so it looks nice and is easy to find the subject your looking for.

Let me know if you have a link you want added. I have a few links that were given to me back in 2002 and some that were emailed to me that I will be adding...finally! Sorry guys for being away for so long...

How is the Virtual Study Group going? I see a few postings...but not much. May be because it is summer...vacation and such... :D

Parador, activity in this forum has slowed down just as it has across the board. The participants still seem very keen, though! :D After all, LOTR is now the focus.

Thank you for all the work - updating, adding, re-linking. It's appreciated, and this really is a great resource.

The slowing down of an Age...

Postby Parador~J » Thu Jun 16, 2005 7:08 am

I call it the slowing down of an Age...

We had some good times on this message board...and I'm sure many are continuning to enjoy the board...especially all the new comers :)

I don't think this place will ever disappear...at least I hope not. It's an excellent Tolkien message board 8)

Many a wonderful people have come and gone from here...some will come back from time to time. Hmmm...may be this is a good time to find that old thread I created...TORC's all time Best Posts / Threads...and revive it

Thank-you Impenitent! (you'll always be Novice to me...you brought to the name Novice quality and integrity...and just knowing you are still around is comforting to a returning TORCer

Tedious work!

Postby Parador~J » Thu Jun 16, 2005 2:37 pm

Very tedious work...but well worth it :)

What little I've done has taken me a few hours. After I copied and pasted what I did so far...and then submitted it...I found that I needed to test the website urls first :P

Too...I'm adding color to the fonts...makes it easier on the eyes...plus it is eye appealing 8)

I'm on to the 'B's now....

I just got back from putting my XBox on layaway...finally! An XBox to add to my collection :happydance:

Who all is still around in the VTSG :?:

I'm really excited with the new websites I'm finding...there are a few that are out of commission from the older links...I expected that. But there sure is a lot of new websites on the Internet to get my hands on

Hey, Vana!!

I haven't been here in a while....I misplaced my disc that I have the Library links saved on. And then...I wasn't sure if anyone even visited.

I need to get back in here and finish this...and update it. It's alot of work doing this...I have other projects I've been doing.

**hands Vana a cup of warm Hobbit Herbal tea....they both sit in over stuffed lounging chairs in front of the Library's fireplace....sipping tea and talking over old times and the times that lay ahead **

Parador, I checked the links in the first post, and a few of them weren't active any longer:

Art of the Silmarillion (http://koti.mbnet.fi/~badgers/2d_9.html)

Tolkien Inspired Artwork Gallery (http://www.nightrunner.com/gallery/html/index.html)

Adventures of Beowulf (http://www.lonestar.net/literature/beowulf/)

Middle-earth Science Pages (http://people.mainz.netsurf.de/~lalaith/M-earth.html)

The World of Middle-earth in Art has moved; now, it can be found here.

Also, I've got another Beowulf link for you:
Beowulf on Steorarume

Keep up the good work, whenever you can! :)

Determined

Postby Parador~J » Tue Feb 27, 2007 3:19 pm

Mae Govannen, rowanberry :)

With Vana having stopped by and now your words of encouragement and help....I'm determined to get this library back in to the shape it was in a few years ago

I have it posted on another forum too...more up-to-date. I'll copy and paste it over to here and change those links, rowanberry...and add the one you suggested. Thank-you!!

This could be a really cool library once I get it finished. Of course...there's always work to be done in here on a weekly and monthly basis.

Thank-you both for your encouragement 8)
