There are business-related activities here???? <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-shocked.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-shocked.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-shocked.gif"border=0>

Oh, that's not business, that's fun. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> It's certainly more fun than the arguments in Philosophy. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

I wonder if it would be possible to not show post count in them?

How would we know when to bring cake? <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

Seriously, I did have a reaction like that while looking for an adopter, and lurked in a couple adoption threads before entering this one. (You're so huggable, Ax!) But the thing that really drew me into this thread was that people were talking about writing, something that currently interests me. So, besides keeping the thread alive, the OT discussion does help new posters identify the interests of the people in the thread so they can choose like-minded folks.

One factor, I think, is the age of the poster. I might be way off base on this one, cos I know the young'uns are a lot more net savvy than I am, but I imagine it is daunting to enter a discussion where a lot of the people feel older than you. I have to remind myself, sometimes, before posting a reponse in a thread, that the other poster might be twelve years old!

Keeping threads alive, dealing with age and anonymity of posters, the fact that none of our conversations are 'private' on the internet, even though they feel that way ... these are characteristics of our community that relate to the technology we're using. We can't really change how the internet works. The only long term solution might be to keep reminding ourselves that there is an invisible community here as well as a visible one, and to 'speak' to them from time to time, like we're doing now.

Jn

Well said, Jnyusa: an excellent point about the discussions giving visitors an idea of the interests of the people active here. And I think age is significant - a person of (cough!) riper years such as myself feels a bit uncomfortable in a thread full of teenagers, and I'm sure the converse is equally true. I like it that several of the adopters appear to be young adults, as well as some that are a bit further along; that adds a good degree of choice for newcomers.

I must add, however, that the variety of perspective coming from people of all ages is one aspect of TORC that I have greatly enjoyed.
<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Wow, I see a lively discussion in here already <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Ax, we've started talking about this in the mentoring email list. It goes to the email you registered in your acct. If you wouldn't mind checking in and giving us your thoughts, I'd value the input a lot <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Done, IE.

We may be restarting threads in this forum at a lower threshold as a stopgap measure. 500 is the number being bandied about. I have also raised the issue of perhaps hiding member post count in this forum, although I can see that cutting both ways--being around people with 1000s of posts could be intimidating, or could show you that oldbies actually like mixing with newer folk.

thoughts?
Well, I was just re-reading some of this thread, and there doesn't seem to be a problem with new folks joining in. They post, we welcome- they either ask a few questions and disappear or stay on indefinitely, like me. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-blush.gif"border=0> <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-rolleyes.gif"border=0> <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

How would this change if you changed anything? Perhaps there isn't really a problem after all.

Imo, cutting the thread count to 500 is an excellent idea. Makes it a lot easier to load and post.

I don't have an opinion one way or the other about post count. It's OK with me if we don't show it ... what about shields? Will they go, too?

Jn

Axordil,

Its one of those chicken and egg situations I guess.

I hope seeing older members sitting around eating cake and drinking Lattes, encourages the new people to join in and ask questions, <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif"border=0> it would be horrid if it didn’t and you don’t seem to mind our adding our knowledge of the way things work to the mix, its almost like an extended family. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

Having hit the massive number of 2<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-shocked.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-shocked.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-shocked.gif"border=0> I did wonder if Jon and Ted would allow me to start my own Hundred Acre Family Tree Help Line thread <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-confused.gif"border=0>, but I am too scared of rejection to ask :’(

Anyway what I am trying in my tiggerty way to say, is if my prescence with my number of posts puts newbies off, I guess I can drink my coffee somewhere else <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif"border=0>, but I’d prefer to stay propping up this end of the counter, now I’ve gone to the trouble of having a caffenine IV unit installed <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

I think that having adoption threads that are _only_ new people is, well, more intimidating than anything else mentioned so far.

Which is _my_ way of saying you ain't getting away that easily, Tigger. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

melly--thanks! I call it "Kian vs. the avacado, round one." <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

I am going to ask the mods to lock this thread and will restart it with my first post. Same diner, same management, slightly different fixtures. Maybe I'll put in track lighting...<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>
