Your post on that thread made perfect sense to me, Tiggie. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> Myposts tend to get confused as I try to assimilate what others are telling me about the subject.<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-rolleyes.gif"border=0> Sometimes I have to think on it for several days before I can think of something useful to say. And even then it doesn't come out clear... It's probably time for me to re-read the whole thing.

Hello all;

I'm somewhat interested in being adopted by Axordil--kudos to you, I would be honored to learn the art of argument from you, although I know I will not agree with much of your worldview!--
But I'd like to explore the role-play forums a little, too, having never played with that and being extremely curious.
So, can one get adopted by TWO uhmm..."parents"?
Or can you help, Axordil?

apologetically,
The Widow

Welcome, TheWidowEglantine!

Make yourself at home here at the Hash House and Diner, and our gracious host will be along shortly. Be sure to ask him for some hot chocolate, or if you would prefer, coffee is available in a variety of forms.

And welcome to TORC. I hope you enjoy being a part of this highly interesting community.

<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>
Thanks for the welcome, Castanea_d:

COFFEE, definitely. There is so much fun in the world, that I don't want to miss any--and that involves not sleeping. So Coffee is my drug of choice.
I'll treat myself to an English Toffee Capuccino...thanks! <taking a tentative sip and kicking back in my chair>...
So, anybody here spent any time in the role-play forums?

TWE <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-cool.gif"border=0>

Oh! And I forgot to ask:

Where would be the best place to ask a question like:

Did the rock Pippin threw down the well wake the Balrog? Or just let the Orcs know someone was there? Did the rock start something, or was it going to happen anyway?

Just to shoot the breeze, waiting for Axordil...

TWE
Hello, TWE. Welcome. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>
I've tried roleplay. I found it too addictive, though, and stay away now... except for a single, disorganized, non-serious one. There's a roleplay class you can take: Role Play 101 http://www.tolkienonline.com/thewhitecouncil/messageview.cfm?catid=25&threadid=26445 & Role Play 102 http://www.tolkienonline.com/thewhitecouncil/messageview.cfm?catid=25&threadid=49391

And they always welcome newcomers at the Lucky Fortune Inn : http://www.tolkienonline.com/thewhitecouncil/messageview.cfm?catid=30&threadid=54678 It's designed to let people try out roleplay.

As for your question, it depends on whether you are talking books or movies. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

MariaHobbit;

Hi! I've seen you around already...check out my intro at the welcome site (Old Newbie/New Oldbie).
Role Play is addictive, huh? Sounds like my cup of Capuccino...

I'll check out the classes, thanks.

I assume from your comment that if I wanted to talk about that question in the books, I would try out the books forum, otherwise the movies forum. Good idea. Is there one for both? I should know this...

TWE

waiting for Axordil

Is that anything like Waiting for Godot? <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

I know I don't expect my fellow diners to spend all their time here. We have a broad variety of interests, and if you want to work with someone in a more role=playing oriented adoptions thread, I have no problem with that.

BTW, for your and everyone's consideration--I have adopted a new policy as a New Year's Resolution. In general, I no longer do other people's research for them. When someone asks for an example of something that is readily available with five minutes of Web work, I tell them to look it up themselves.

This accomplishes two things: first, I waste less of my time repeating legwork (especially for those I suspect will never be swayed by anything short of brain trauma anyway). Second, anyone who actually _does_ go out and look around instantly becomes a more worthwhile person to talk to, no matter what their opinions.

Am I being too much of a hard case here?

Standing and bowing

Greetings, Oh great Axordil...

Of course you are being tough on lazy-brains, oh wise one, and so I accept your discipline, oh desired of masters. :0
In future I will refrain from silly questions until I have done the legwork!
However, when striking up conversations in hash houses, one tends to start the discussion with more superficial inquiry...especially when shooting the breeze while sipping capuccino and waiting for the arrival of the venerated proprietor... <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

Care for a capuccino? Oh dear, WidowEglantine, that doesn't apply to _here._ Here we sip coffee and cocoa and listen to the jukebox, when it's working. And blow off steam from the other, more argumentative boards.

Am I being too much of a hard case here?
I dunno, Ax. Sometimes it's hard to find things if you don't know just the right search words to use... or if you have a particular article to point out, then a link is necessary.

Well, you all sure have been helpful to me. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> I was getting a slight brain ache with the leg work. There I was, using the search feature and not even seeing that there was a box to check for searching all the forums at once! How does one miss that? Ay yi yi!

Then, I embarrass myself by making it known that I was already using the search feature, wrongly, and had to admit missing something so obvious.

Edit:
I may have asked this already, but, are there really 38 thousand plus members?? Yikes!! (Of course there is, do numbers lie?)
I guess what I really would like to know is if anyone has a roundabout idea about how many members are regularly active here at TORC?
Let this be a reminder to you all to never ask me to describe something that I was an eyewitness to. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-blush.gif"border=0> *Dotk hangs her head in embarrassment*

TWE - Welcome to the Hash House!

If you want to know about balrogs, there is a Big List of Best Book Threads on the front page of the Books forum, and Balrog will appear alphabetically where he belongs.

If you start a thread asking about balrogs, 38,000 people will tell you to use the search function. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

DotK - the search function will only look for titles right now. I don't know why. It is somewhat annoying.

Well, fellow diners, I got my PM back so it's time to re-activate the buddy thing with all of you. I'm trying to remember who used to be on my list. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-blush.gif"border=0> You're all welcome to send a buddy thing to me, too.

Jn

DotK -- I'll send you one and then you'll see!! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

Your "My Buddies" link is on the left side of the front page, and you can go there and see which of your buddies are on line at that time, and you can talk to them on IM ... and I think you can see what threads they're posting in, too, though I've never tried to use that function.

I'll put in a request to make you one of my buddies - you'll get a TORC email asking you to approve or reject me (please don't reject me! ) and then my name will appear on your list in bold when I'm online and in grey when I'm not.

Jn

Reject you!! Are you kidding??? I know you are! If I did reject you, it would have been because I clicked on the wrong link!

On this page, where I am typing a response to your post, (and I know what your post says because I have copied it to a notepad) the My Buddies link is in the right hand corner, under terms of service and other things. I am not sure where it will be when I go to the main page, but I am not going there now, not on your life! I will probably get lost if I leave now. hehe <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> I will look after I finish this post.

Talk on IM? That is the 'instant message' thing like on AOL IM? Is it the same as that, or a copy of that of some kind? Like to chat within the board or something? I think I would have to be here for a while before I know anyone enough for that, though. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Thanks for being my first 'buddy'! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

and I think you can see what threads they're posting in, too, though I've never tried to use that function

I use it! It's good for finding interesting threads I might have overlooked somewhere. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

The IM thing is kind of like chat only more dysfunctional and unpredictable. I think it only renews if you open a new page on TORC... and it also will hold a reply for you days after the person makes it. It's kind of strange and I don't use it much.

Thank you, MariaHobbit, for being my second buddy!

I don't think I will do the chat, but who knows?

Currently I spend my time here trying to get a handle on how to navigate the board, and I have found interesting threads, posted in them, and then could not find them again!! Until I asked the question of how to find my own posts, and was told to make myself my buddy. So, technically, I was my first buddy! hehe <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Thanks, though, to you guys for making me feel welcome.
TWE, don't worry! Over the years I've probably added 5-10 extra posts to my son's and daughter's post counts. Usually, I just edit the post while still logged in as them and delete what I said, with an explanation, and then repost what I said under my own log in.

I just don't like the look of my thoughts under Muad-Dib or Chameleon's name, for some reason!
