I'm glad to see the regulars are making you feel at home, RealDeal, and you too, DotK.

And thanks to jnyusa for sharing her personal experience! Somehow that episode in your noobie period had escaped my notice...<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> I would share a similarly embarassing one of my own, but it's been so long...excuse me while I polish my walker.

And thanks to Tiggy-Star for her wonderful tip! I had been running into that issue myself.

Well, at least one person here is in NZ, and another is, I believe, in Japan; a third is in India. You're just helping us provide 24/7 coffee and cocoa service everywhere! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Dear folks, I have a question, too. kind_faramir just made a very nice first post over in movies, beginning a new thread about Howard Shore (SW<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>:N!!!! - that's me swooning, not kind_faramir), and I replied to him with a welcome, and attempted to put in a couple of thread links to similar threads already existing, and an invitation and link to this most wonderful of Diners. I can't get the links to work right, and worse, once I have posted the message, it will not let me edit it to fix it. As an example, here is the link to kind_faramir's thread:

http://www.tolkienonline.com/thewhitecouncil/messageview.cfm?catid=13&;threadid=74910

It cuts off the URL at the & sign, so when you click on it, you simply go to the main forums page.

When editing is then attempted, I get the little message box, but without the "done" and "cancel" buttons at the bottom, so no changes can be made. Sigh! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-confused.gif"border=0>

kind_faramir, if you take up my invitation and show up here at the Diner, welcome! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Well, my question was answered elsewhere: InnocentEvil told me what to do, as she (?) was putting a lock on kind_faramir's thread. Here's what InnocentEvil said:

The code for links has changed (but I believe the directions haven't). To do a link you need to encase it like this [ url ]www.yourlinkhere.com [ /url ] of course, removing the spaces.

So, let me try it and see if it works: this is a link to the fan website for my favorite LOTR personage (other than Howard Shore, of course!!!! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> )

http://miranda.maidenfair.net/

I hope this works! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Hooray <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> It does! It even lets me edit it to add this line!

While I'm at it, InnocentEvil was very kind to answer my question, but I thought he (she?) was rather short with kind_faramir. And the poor fellow (?) was on his absolute first post, having just joined TORC yesterday! If it had been me, I would go off in a corner and cry. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-crying.gif"border=0>

Oh well, Movies is a VERY busy place these days, and I am sure they genuinely don't want to be flooded with dozens of threads on similar topics.

Daughter of the King, I look forward to your signature picture!

castanea--

Sometimes the moderators can seem a bit short, true, but there may be mitigating circumstances. Perhaps the person in question had been causing other problems, wittingly or no. Or perhaps it's someone who has been disciplined or even banned trying to come back onto the boards under another screen name.

But even if it really was the poor guy/gal's first time, I usually try to cut the mods some slack. Sometimes just being matter-of-fact can come off harsher than it was meant to, depending on the context. And their job is not one that most of us could or would do. Certainly not at that pay scale. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Axordil, thanks for your explanation. The moderators of TORC do a fine job, indeed! And I do not have enough words to express my appreciation for Jonathan and Ted.

Back on Thanksgiving weekend, there was a sudden flock of new folk, I think brought in by Marty's reports on ROTK. The level of language, courtesy, etc., took a turn for the worse for a few days - but then improved - I think I saw somewhere where they had banned quite a few of the new people. I have taken a couple of peeks at Ain't-it-cool-news <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-shocked.gif"border=0> and it is a cautionary example of what depths LOTR fandom can descend to. There, but for the moderators, TORC would be as well.

I wonder if there is a thread there; how can people be exposed to, and even enjoy, Tolkien, and not undergo some degree of moral improvement? Then again, I work in a church, and find that people are pretty rotten there, too, in spite of plentiful opportunity to know better. So, I guess it is a silly question.

It looked to me like kind_faramir meant well; his post was lengthy and well-thought out, and introduced an idea or two that had not been discussed elsewhere -- he just had not looked for other threads on the topic. But, as you say, I don't know what else might have been going on.

And I do know from working with children that the best response is very often short, firm, and to the point. Works with adults, too - at least sometimes.

While I'm rambling, I just had lunch with a few co-workers, and one of them says that the local cinema (NOT on the "Trilogy Tuesday" list, just a standard ROTK cinema) is going to be showing all three of the movies, beginning AFTER the ROTK midnight premiere and ending with the next day's matinee. I cannot find any confirmation for this, but my co-worker got the info from a friend who works at the said cinema. I suddenly have visions of (a) working all day that day, from 7 AM to 11 PM, then (b) going to the ROTK premiere, then (c) staying all night/day for FOTR, TTT, and another go at ROTK. Talk about a drooling fanboy fantasy! Trouble is, I would probably fall asleep during Helm's Deep. Then again, that might not be a bad idea <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

Have any of you heard of this scenario taking place anywhere? Despite a good source, I suspect a rumor. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif"border=0>

Peace to all!

Thanks for the information, Axordil. I am now having trouble changing the size to the appropriate measurements. (I am so computer dopey) I don't get that much time to mess around here, so I am limited on that too, but I will get the picture up soon. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

An aside here on the baby picture you have: that child is adorable!! Oh my, what a cutie!!

A note too on the written word: it is very easy to misunderstand someone's intent and meaning when we post a comment on a message board, and even in hand written letters too. Therefore, you have to go with the benefit of the doubt when it comes to writing, especially here on the web. That is my 42 cents. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Meneltarma, I am pleased to meet you!

Axordil, I agree with DaughteroftheKing about your picture - this is your child, I take it. Their website and their recorded phone message make no mention of any showings of FOTR or TTT. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif"border=0>
Oh, I wish you all were going to the Gathering, too!!! It would be fun to meet all of you in person.

Everything seems to be conspiring against me going, though. I checked at the cinema yesterday afternoon, and indeed it was a tricksy, false rumor. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif"border=0> Just as well; the sensible adult part of me (small though it be) tells me that staying up all night for a couple of movies during a week when I need to be at my best is irresponsible. But it was fun to imagine! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Tigger, thanks for the suggestion. One of these days, I do hope to see the EE's (I haven't, yet). My method of Movie Preparation is to re-read the books. It has worked for me these two years as a way of entering into the spirit of Middle-Earth (as if hanging around TORC were not enough to do that!) <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> I have barely started, this time; Frodo, Sam and Pippin have just met up with Gildor Inglorian and his company, and are walking together toward Woodhall.

Sam walked along at Frodo's side, as if in a dream, with an expression on his face half of fear and half of astonished joy.

I wonder if others have noted the likeness between the song to Elbereth and the plainsong antiphons to the Blessed Virgin?

Salve Regina, mater misericordiae:
Vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra, salve.
Ad te clamamus, exules filii Evae.
Ad te suspiramus, gementes et flentes,
in hac lacrimarum valle.

(Hail, O Queen, Mother of mercy;
our life, our sweetness, and our hope: hail!
To thee we cry, poor banished children of Eve.
To thee we send up our sighs,
groaning and weeping in this valleyof tears.)

JRRT would have known this well, having heard monks singing it (in the Ancient Tongue) to its scrumptious plainsong tune during Vespers.
---------------
Some of you are staying spoiler-free, but after you see the movie, you should read Lidless' thread, Letter from Berlin, wherein he recounts the trip he and his daughter took to the European premiere.

www.tolkienonline.com/thewhitecouncil/messageview.cfm?catid=13&threadid=74900

He has a most wonderful description of what it was like to see the movie. He loved the movie and cried during it.

Take lots of Kleenex! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-crying.gif"border=0>

Peace,

Castanea_d. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

castanea--
You are almost certainly correct in the connection, I think. Even the tone is the same.

I haven't been able to make out the words on the FOTR EE where the Elves are passing through the Shire, singing, but I'm willing to bet that's A Elbereth! Gilthoniel! they're singing. In which case Howard Shore picked up on the connection too--it sounds like an elven take on plainsong to me. I wish I could hear the whole thing!

meneltarma-

Yes indeed. We'll be starting him on solid foods when we get back from Toronto--mashed avacadoes and bannanas. I live in terror of what the diapers will look like...<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-shocked.gif"border=0>

Tiggy-

Check your email! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>
Hey, all!

My name's megz, and I'm a newb (though I'm sure that's pretty obvious) >__<, and I'm kinda confused...this is where I post to ask to be adopted right?

Anyways, can I be adopted by you Ax? *puppy eyes* In reality, I chose you because of your interest in philosophy; I'm only a teen but I'm really into that kind of stuff, especially when it comes to Tolkien. It's really fun to have discussions about the meanings of his novels. ^__^

~*Meggz*~

You will find our esteemed Proprietor to be a font of wisdom on such matters. I am just a newcomer, myself, and am still learning the ropes.

Quite a few of our regulars have gone off to Toronto for the Gathering, but Axordil is still around, I think. Make yourself at home until she shows up, and help yourself to hot chocolate <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> - there is an espresso machine too, if that would be preferable.

And again, welcome to TORC! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

Welcome, Flower of Ithilien! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Beautiful name! Just about anyone here can answer any questions you have.

Those of us who are not at the gathering are wrapped up in other things during holiday season - I am, anyway. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> But there's at least one old-timer in the thread every day, so ... ask away!

Jn
