Welcome flowerofithilien! Hope I spelled that right. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

I do have a couple questions for my adoptive field of dear folks:

One: How can I read what is posted (while I am writing a reply post) so I can avoid mistakes such as spelling the above new member's name wrong?

Two: How do you get all those little sayings and links at the bottom of all your posts? Can anyone do this? How do you do this? Is it easier than trying to post a pic?

Ok, that was technically four questions in one, sorry. hehe.

However, only answer when you have a moment to do so. Some people have limited time on the internet and I would not want them to waste it to answer my questions, especially since I am limited on time these days myself. Hopefully over the Christmas and New Year's break I will have more time. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

I actually chose this place for adoption because I liked the name, Axordil. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

DotK -- to give a longer answer the other part of your question, when you open a reply box the page that shows on your computer is the first page of the thread. That's why you have to change the settings to show backwards chrono order if you want to see who you are replying to while you reply.

Doesn't always work, though, if you're replying to something two pages back, which often happens to me in fast moving threads. What Tiggie said - compose in a word program and then paste into a reply box - seems to work the best for most people. You can paste names and quotes and such from the Tolkien page into any word program. Or, if you're short on memory and can't open two programs at a time, leave a blank where the name should be, go back and look at the name after posting, and edit it into your reply.

Happy Holidays everyone. (Did I say that already?) Will be out of town all next week but will be back before the New Year.

Jn

jnyusa (if you haven't left town yet), thank you for the Moral Universe thread. Your latest post there is wonderful <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

As I think I said some weeks ago, that particular thread was the reason I came out of lurkerdom. I appreciate the welcome and civility that you and Wilko and Voronwe and all the other folks over there extended me when I posted in that discussion.

I'm off to see the movie (I hope!) at tomorrow's matinee <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

EDIT: Daughter of the King, I LOVE your signature pic! Castanea_.d, Thank you for contributing to the thread! And I'm glad you like the last post ... for me it's kind of the last word on Tolkien.

I hope you enjoy the movie. I'm not a big fan of PJ's style, etc. but had the good luck to see the trilogy with fellow TORCers and then to meet with them again tonight for discussion. That's been the very best part of the whole adventure.

Jn

I cried too, lots and lots.
<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-crying.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-crying.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-crying.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-crying.gif"border=0>

Sean Astin is incredible!!!!! He was good in FOTR and TTT, but this was one of the finest performances I have ever seen. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

Elijah Wood was good, too. I hated him in TTT, but he was good in this one.

Even Dominic and Billy, whom I have not taken very seriously - they were both wonderful. Especially the table dance! Loved it! And the welcome to Isengard!

I have absolutely, utterly hated what they have done with Elrond - even his storyline ends up a little better than it has been in FOTR and TTT. I still think PJ, Fran and Philippa totally missed the boat with Arwen's story line, though Liv did as well with the part as anyone could. (Edit: FlowerOfIthilien, I gather you might be an Arwen fan. I hope I am not offending you! I LOVE book-Arwen, and carried a schoolboy crush on her for many years, and I think Liv has looked and acted every bit as Arwen ought to be. And I am not sure how a screenplay could sufficiently bring Arwen to life - a movie cannot have the story tucked away in an appendix like the book does. I just don't think THIS screenplay quite did it. One exception - the look forward to Aragorn's death (was that in TTT?) - that was a terrific scene, one of the finest in the movies, bar none. Anyway, Arwen has been discussed on TORC. A lot. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0> End of Edit.)

Aside from Sean, Castanea's Best Actor awards <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0> go to Miranda Otto and Bernard Hill. Wow!!!!!!!

I had avoided listening to the Soundtrack in advance (yes, I read everything I could find about it, but not a snippet of the music!), and was so blown away by the Movie that it was very much in the background - which is a Good Thing for a soundtrack. After listening to the library copy of ROTK The Soundtrack about a half-dozen times (in 2 days!), my already very high regard for Howard Shore has gone up another notch.

Especially, I think that the musical material in the tracks "Return of the King" and "Grey Havens" - essentially, everything in the movie from the time Frodo wakes up in bed to the beginning of the credits -- is sublime. Absolutely sublime. And I think upon repeated viewings of the film it will be obvious how much weight the soundtrack is carrying through this part of the movie - a LOT.

And when Aragorn sang the lines right out of the book... that was one of the moments when I totally lost it.

I don't yet like "Into the West," but as I said many pages back here about "Gollum's Song," "Into the West" is an ideal fit for where it is in the movie. After the overwhelming experience of this film, and especially the ending, a bridge back into Real Life is needed, and Annie L. supplies it gently and well.

And the Credits - I assume those are Alan Lee drawings. Wow! I just wish they had put C. Lee and B. Dourif in, and hope they at least put them in the EE credits, complete with drawings.

[End of Rave]

Regards to All,

Castanea
<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>
Thanks for the "get well soon" wish, Castanea! I hope I do too...it really stinks being sick right before X mas <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif"border=0>

Oh, and don't worry about offending me...actually I can't stand Arwen. I only dressed up as her cause I couldn't find an Eowyn dress (I LOVE Eowyn...and I agree with you, Miranda did an awesome job in the third movie!)

Anyways, seeing as though most people have seen the movie by now, I'll say what I liked and didn't like about it.

First of all, I loved the scenery and special effects. When they were lighting the beacons on the mountain tops and it was showing the mountain range, that absolutley took my breath away. And for special effects, they did an amazing job on Shelob...I nearly jumped out of my seat in fright when she snuck up behind Frodo. The acting was awesome (especially Miranda Otto, Bernard Hill and Sean Astin), the music was beautiful (got the soundtrack about two days after i saw the movie and I nearly cried on the track "Grey Havens"<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>, and I loved the character development, as well as the way P.J. ended the movie.

However, there were some dissapointments...mainly the things they cut out of the third movie. There were some really important storyline developments from the novel that I think they should have had in the third movie, even if it did make it a little too long...mainly the "Scouring of the Shire" and the "Houses of Healing."

And I will admit, I was a little confused with the whole Arwen/Elrond subplot...I know that Elves can die of grief, but that wasn't in the book was it? And the only elf I knew of who had foresight was Galadriel...

Anyways, overall, I was more than impressed. It is extremely hard to pull off screen adaptations, especially with something as complicated as Lord of the Rings, but P.J., and everyone else involved in the film did an excellent job. I will be very upset if this film doesn't win an Oscar for Best Picture.

~*Meggz*~
If I remember rightly, Elrond has foresight as well (in FOTR the Book, and maybe The Hobbit, too?). Arwen's dying of grief bit had no connection whatsoever with the book. I had not thought about elves dying of grief. I believe there WAS one, an elf woman who still sings in the river at Lothlorien - Legolas tells the Fellowship some of her tale. Is some echo of this maybe what PJ and company had in mind?

Thanks for the info, Castanea...it's been a while since I've read the books and it's very hard to remember all the details.

Actually, I wasn't quite sure if Arwen was dying of grief, or if it was something along the lines of what happened to Luthien (she gave up her immortality so she could be with the one she loved); maybe a bit of both. And the only "powers" I remeber Elrond and the other elves having was telepathy (which is only mentioned once, when Frodo meets up with the elves in the third book), but it makes sense that Elrond would have foresight...hmm, I should probably read the books again.

Also, about the elves dying of grief, I remember reading that the only two things that can kill them are grief and dying in battle...but I don't recall any elf dying of grief (other than Feanor's mother...but that wasn't really grief).

Anyways, I found that kind of strange that they added that part with Arwen dying...in my personal opinion, they strayed just a little too far from the actual storyline by adding that in.

Any thoughts?

Meggz

Hello there. Just dropping by the diner to say hello. The site approved my picture, but I really do not want it that big, and am trying to get it smaller. In the meantime, I am sorry for the size. The size of Axordil's picture would be idea, so that is what I am shooting for. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

I am freshly home from the ROTK, and really did enjoy the film experience. Always someone who prefers a book to a movie adaptation, it is really saying something that I enjoyed it. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> I felt some of the changes were unnecessary, but all along with each movie I had that thought. I mean, in these movies there was so much taken out, why did they have to invent things that never happened at all?

I thought the Denathor scene was totally ridiculous, and I agree that Liv Tyler did a great job with the material given her.

Thanks for the kind words about my cuties. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Hello, to my friends here at the Diner. Remarkably, though I was at the same physical location as Ax and MariaHobbit for 4 days, I didn't catch up with either one. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif"border=0>

The Gathering was wonderful, though. And the chance to see the ROTK with a theater full of nothing but fans (who booed the commercials that kept the movie from starting instantly <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>) was an unforgettable experience.

Tigger--I loved your little Ted. An adorable fellow. My daughter and I both bought raffle tickets for him. Does anyone know the total raised or who won him?

Hello to everyone else. Must sleep now and prepare for Real Life.
I saw your note on the message board, Bess, and thought I left a message on your phone- but that wasn't until Tuesday night as we were heading for the Medival Times... and I guess I dialed the wrong number. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif"border=0> Oh, well. If you are in the background of any of these pictures we took, let me know!!

Here are the best of the ones we took. I'm still waiting for permission from a couple of other people... but here are some of them:

This is the front page of the Toronto Star. I had a fine GOTF time, but I am sad that I missed Bess and others. Too many schedule constraints with Kian...although we did $pring for a baby$itter Tuesday night so Mrs. Ax and I and our two friends could go to TTT together.

No costume for Kian--he'd only wear it once, and then what do we do with it? I'm not sure the nearest crisis nursery would really want a baby hobbit outfit. Although we could have put him in something like the gown Sam's youngest was wearing in the last scene of ROTK, I suppose.

Pointy ears are hot. I'm glad I got a pair for Mrs. Ax. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

We had a lovely conversation with someone who used to be from St. Louis on the subway ride to the theater.

Canada has some great beers and ales. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

Toronto City Hall looks like a set from Lost in Space.

You can wear a security t-shirt as a turban if you're in costume.

Maria, so sorry I didn't get that message! I was feeling kind of sorry for myself because I was quite shy and didn't meet as many people as I had wanted to. (Typical actor--bold on stage, shy off-stage) I did meet *E*, Tarina and Silver Scribe briefly. The TORC quilt was beautiful. Everyone did a great job on it.

I know I saw your husband that night at Medieval Times! And your son, too. My husband was dressed in a long maroon robe and hat, just a generic Medieval lord. I had on a Renaisance style purple dress with lots of beading. My pictures have to wait upon my husband's pleasure as they are in his digital camera and will need to be downloaded. I think he may even have a picture of your husband in there!

It feels as if one Age is ending now that ROTK is out, doesn't it. Strange and sad.
Wow, Bess. You were feeling bad, too? I left that one message for you, and another person on their room phone... and didn't get either call returned. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif"border=0> Truely disappointing. Now I know that the messaging system might have been malfunctioning. Or maybe kids involved disappeared the message accidently.... Actually, I think I did that once on my room phone. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-blush.gif"border=0> I wonder whose message I deleted? <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-blush.gif"border=0>
