Ooooh! Oooh! I wanna be adopted! I've read through all of the guides (am currently re-reading to make sure I didn't miss anything!) I think I've pretty much figured the basics out but I'm mortally afraid of making a mistake and getting everyone angry and shaking their fists at me! I'm going to *try* and start a thread for people traveling by bus to the Gathering, and I was hoping to get a 'pre-emptive' adoption by you fine people, in case I have any questions along the way. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> Thanks!

If you've got any questions, feel free to ask<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>
So, you're going to the gathering? Lucky you. I can't go, unfortunetly<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Hello PG and thank you! I think I got the thread started, I read the directions on this thread a couple pages back and everything seems to be working out fine! Hooray! But I'm sorry to hear that you can't attend the Gathering <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif"border=0> And *I* was complaining about the length of the trip from Seattle Washington to Toronto Ontario. (Three days on the bus, but it's only costing me a hundred bucks-- score!)

Hello Meldissë and welcome to MAAMA and of course TORC <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

Consider yourself adopted although it sounds as if you are doing a great job already! I had a wee look at your thread and I have to say it sounds like a good idea to me - but 3 days on a bus! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-shocked.gif"border=0> I'm coming by plane myself <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

Now if you have any questions to ask please feel free - if fact please do!

Oh and tell us a wee bit about yourself, I'm Scottish but Mammo and Ateelah are both in the states so may be around a bit more when you are (although Ateelah is moving house just now so we may not see much of her for a while) Mammo is Easy Coast and Ateelah is west which gives us a pretty good spread, not to mention PG, who you've met already <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> She's not really one of us, but we wish she was! - she's in Oz and just about as helpful as is possible <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

Spd sometimes drops in and although we love him dearly <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> you would be ill advised to follow his example in anything at all! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif"border=0> (Smooch to spd <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>)

Hope to see you around <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Hi Alys! I know, three days on a bus... But I'm used to taking road trips. My mom and I have taken road trips every year for about the past year- one time we drove all the way to the South entrance of Yellowstone (Wyoming) in one day.

I guess, a little about myself- I'm from the Seattle area of Washington, I've lived here my whole life. I am 20, a college student, going to get my degree so I can become a librarian. After that I plan on going back to college and getting an English degree so I can teach high school. I'd also like to teach to kids that are in prison. I love Tolkien (duh!) and many other authors, ranging from the beatniks (especially William Burroughs) to the likes of Douglas Adams (Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy). I watch a ton of movies (I like weird stuff-- think David Lynch, Sam Raimi, etc) and foreign. I like classic rock (The Doors, Pink Floyd), classic country (Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline) and a little bit of newer stuff (Massive Attack, Radiohead, Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam). I don't watch much t.v. but when I do, it's probably 'The Simpsons' or (before they cancelled it, grr!) 'Push, Nevada'. I'm also engaged to the most wonderful man in the entire universe, ever. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> (No offense meant to any of the other gentlemen!)

Thank you again for the warm welcome, and I'm sure questions will pop up sooner or later. I'm probably going to be getting a Premiere Membership here pretty soon after I read up on it and figure out a way to fit it into my budget. In which case I'm sure I'll have plenty of questions!

So you're the one that got him! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif"border=0>

You've come to the right place as Ateelah is already a librarian and I am still hoping to retrain as one myself one of these days, for me there is just something so alluring about a huge room filled with books! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

You'll find people who match all your tastes at TORC I never cease to be amazed by the range of topics and opinions that are present here!

Good luck with your Premier Membership - there is still the possibility that Ads may start appearing on the site to help pay for the huge bandwith we all use but PM's should hopefully not see them - that alone would make the $5 a month worthwile! Also you get to express your individuality with a picture and a title!

My title btw is Gaelic and it means "Storm in a Teacup" <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> Which is highly appropriate I promise you <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

Meldisse! Welcome to Torc. I am so pleased to find you here. Alys alerted me tonight.... and you got to meet Pretty Galadriel who seems to meet most of the adoptees first LOL.

I am sure Ateelah will be excited to meet another librarian. I majored in English so between the three of us we should have plenty to talk about.

I am falling down tired right now but I hope to continue our acquaintance tomorrow and over the next few days and weeks.

Welcome.

Hi, Mammo! I really appreciate how nice everyone has been to me here. I'm a message board virgin, heh. I've since looked around at other places (not naming any names...) and have been growing increasingly impressed with TORC. The members are probably the most intelligent and well-spoken of all the other sites I've visited so far. The reason I've been on other sites (I feel like a traitor! Haha) is for the purpose of finding other fans from my area, so I can post and try and get more people for my little bus-to-the-Gathering idea. I have a tenative six people, which is great, but all of us are hopefull to get as many as possible. If you have any ideas, I'd love to hear them! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

So, you're an English major, eh? If you don't mind me asking, do you teach? I've been sort of interviewing my old teachers and asking them about the profession. Half of them are telling me to not get into the field, which suprised me.

Intelligent and well spoken?? Which of the forums have you been in? <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-confused.gif"border=0> <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

All joking aside I have to agree that this is certainly one of the best message boards I have ever visited and it's the only one that brings me back every day I'm online to check what's happening, although I do check out RB every now and then and it's doing great just now <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> I hope you've posted there as I think quite a lot of them are planning coming to the gathering <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

I'm off to Oxford next weekend to a very mini gathering to meet 4 TORCers and an RBer <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> I can hardly wait <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

Meldisse: finally! It is Sunday morning, the board is moving at light speed which is a joy! Men of Middle Earth is over, scores distributed so I am free....well except my daughter wants the pc.

In answer to your questions about English and teaching.... English Literature was my passion but when I went to school in England I went to Law School - don't ask me why! Many reasons <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif"border=0> However I realised pretty quickly that I was not going to be an attorney and I wandered for a while - lived in France. Then I met my husband and we ran a pub in London. Three pubs actually!

When I divorced, my family had all moved to the USA so I followed... I figured the best way to support a family was corporate USA and sure enough I jumped right in.....and then there were the Golden Handcuffs! When you are looking a massive drop in income to do something you would think you would really like to do as opposed to something mediocre that allows you to pay the rent, drive a new car, take vacations etc etc.

So I guess although I always wanted to teach I never have.... I have seriously toyed with the idea but many of my friends have burnt out teaching - so I plug away at what I do!

Plus I have enjoyed many of the corporate positions I have held...Just have to find something similar once again.

So, that's my story.....come back and tell us more about you!

Alys, there is no way that could have made me more jealous! Yeah, i know Hashberry a bit, but not niniel.
The other three...i have no words for that. I'm too jealous <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

Sounds like fun, Mammo! I'd love to travel. I was originally planning on going to Tibet for a little hike through the mountains (hehe) and was saving money for it, but decided to do The Gathering instead. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> *That* is how much of a fanatic I am! I briefly considered going to law school (I think I've wanted to be everything from a paleontologist to a sociologist-- but I'm allergic to dust and am quite anti-social, so both ended up seeming like not the greatest moves. I also wanted to be an astronaut- HAH! I can't even get on a plane without Valium!) Many of my friends have traveled throughout Europe and I am so jealous of them. I would love to visit some time, even live there. Not saying I don't like the Pacific Northwest, it's very beautiful around here. At least, where the government hasn't sold off public land to be clear-cut...

I work at a video store, which has many perks-- some being free rentals and first dibs on movies when they come out on Tuesday. Another is, when I order movies to buy, I get them a week before the official release (usually!) Which means that (hopefully) some time this week I am going to be sitting down to watch the 5-disc special edition FotR! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif"border=0>

Wow Meldissë <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-shocked.gif"border=0> I am consumed with jealousy!! If only I lived closer to you I would be on my way there right now! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

Mammo - I trained to be a lawyer too! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> I actually worked as one very, very, briefly too - it was with a big (by Scottish standards) firm and the lifestyle was just not for me, although I had worked in my summer breaks for a smalltown firm and loved it. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> Don't we all have a lot in common <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Btw thanks for spd's new id - now I know who to avoid <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif"border=0> <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0> Only kidding spd dear <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

Hi! Here's a little request for help from a former Ateelah adoptee. I just changed my TORC name (this was my first message board site and not knowing any better, just used my e-mail address for my
TORC name) Unfortunately, I lost all my personal settings in the change. Someone had explained to me how to put a link up in my bio, but I've forgotten the 'formula' and unfortunately didn't save it anywhere. Would anyone be kind enough to explain it again to me? Thanks a lot!

Hi donnam, Alys, Mammo, et al! I'm taking some time during my lunch to touch bases with TORC. I'm suffering withdrawal! I like the new name, donnam, is Cala okay as a short form or can we still call you donnam?

I've posted an update of my continuing saga in the chat thread in Tom's House. We are supposed to be getting set up with DSL next week, so keep your fingers crossed that I will be able to participate on a more regular basis when that happens!

I'm so glad to see that Alys and Mammo are doing such a wonderful job and am extremely grateful that you both agreed to join me in this agency!

<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>
I've been here 6 months or so, but I think I want to be adopted anyway! When I first signed up, someone asked if I'd like to be adopted, and I politley said "No, thank-you!" <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

But, what the heck..."Self, let's get adopted!"

I hang out in the Books, Movies, Tom's, Eru, and just started popping into Tolkien Virgin. Mostly I respond in Movies though. The Books thread is good to read, but I feel my answers may seem "rustic" (to quote Frodo's thoughts in The Window to the West) compared to some of the Tolkien heavyweights 'round here. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> I lurk more than reply. But I love reading all the wonderful thoughts that are posted here. So many people from all over the world. I think Tolkien was such an amazing writer.

I like travelling, reading, drawing, nature and wildlife (large mammals of the wild, especially - I'm in Vet school right now), playing music, and I have these obsessions: wild animals, Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Star Trek, and Weird Al! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

Hello Lembas_Junkie welcome to MAAMA <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> We don't mind adopting people who know what they are doing - it makes things so much easier for us <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

This is just a quick hello - I'll chat properly later - but first one question. You're not referring to us MAAMA ladies as heavyweights are you? <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-shocked.gif"border=0>
