Hello!

I'm new here.

I first read the Hobbit and LotR so many years ago, I can't remember when it was. I've also read a little of the Silmarillion, and I've browsed through a linguists book about the languages of Middle Earth. Mainly, I used the book for creating elvish names for tabletop Role-Playing games. I very much enjoyed the movies. Have the extended edition of the first two, waiting anxiously for the extended edition of the third. Hoping very much for a Hobbit movie. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

I hopped right into one of the threads to cast a vote for my favorite LotR cast member. Hope I didn't commit a faux pax. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-blush.gif"border=0>

Learning to navigate the message boards. They are unfamiliar to me. I don't know how to do things.

What does all the stuff at the left of the messages mean? Date Joined, Last Visit, and Posts are pretty obvious, but I'm not sure about the rest of it.

SirenDrake

Welcome to TORC and MAAMA, SirenDrake! I hope you've found your visit here pleasant, so far. If you read the first post in this thread there are many helpful links that may answer some of your questions. Also, there is a new FAQ thread in the Adoption forum which offers information about many common questions.

The information to the left of your post relating to Alliance is something you can change in your messageboard settings. It's a personal preference issue and really doesn't mean much unless you want to join one of the guilds. The titles are assigned according to your post-count unless you have Premiere Membership, which enables you to choose your own title.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them here. Alys, Mammo and I try to pop in here as often as we can so I'm sure they will be along to welcome you soon. If you have a question requiring a more immediate response you can click on the eyeglasses at the top right hand side of any of our posts and e-mail us.

Once again, welcome and Happy Posting!

Today I had the opportunity to meet one of my early adoptees (from Ateelah's Adoption Agency), Calaquendi, aka donnam. I posted a brief description in the chat thread in Tom's House, if you're interested. It's always wonderful to put faces to the names!

Good morning... I know, I do not make a good adoptee and TORCer apparently... sorry, I lurk here (not "here" necessarily but in other threads) from time to time but really haven't posted ever since I joined here (when was that?) ah too long ago.... anyhow... I am sorry... but where is the family-thread again? There was one, right? *sigh* cannot find it again.... :? Silly me! Gah I feel so lost without familiar faces... Anyhow... just here to say "Hello!" <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> ...

EDIT: Ah found it (the family-chat-thread I mean....)! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Hi, Malinalda! Good to see you de-lurking! Many long-time members have been long-time lurkers so don't feel too bad about your own post count. It's quality that counts! I'll go check the chat thread. I hope you've been doing well. I know we've all had our ups and downs lately.

Hello. I'm new here and still looking around. I have read Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit and The Silmarillion, and seen the movies. I come from Australia and know hardly anyone who's this crazy about LOTR, so I live on the web lol. I was wondering how it is that you get those little pictures below your banner? Anyone know?
That's about all I'm prepared to write, hope for some help.

Cathryn

Hello, Cathryn!

I'm a newbie myself, so I don't know how much help I can be, but I can answer the question about the little pictures. The pictures that you get depend on the number of posts that you have made. They seem to work a lot like Roman numerals. The sword picture represents 10 posts. The star-shaped shield with a white tree surrounded by stars on a black field is what you get for 1,000 posts. The round shield with a white horse on a green field is what you get for 500 posts. The small red and grey shield is for 100 posts. And the diamond (is that what it is?) represents 50 posts.
Welcome to TORC and MAAMA, Cathryn! One of the first things you can do is read the first post in this thread, it has a number of helpful hints and links. Also, there is an FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) thread in Adoptions that may have the answer to a few of your initial questions. You definitely do not have to read every post in this thread to find answers!

SirenDrake is correct, the images below the banners are related to post count and will change as your post count increases. If you want to add or change anything in your post, you can click on the "Edit" button below any post you want to adjust and it will open into a box similar to the one in which you made your original post. This will not affect your post count but will keep the threads from getting cluttered with repetetive posts. I know that on some messageboards you can't edit your post after a certain period of time. On TORC you can edit your posts anytime.

I hope that's been helpful! I think Mammo and Alys may be around, we're all pretty busy these days but most of us will respond as soon as we can. And, you can always click on the little glasses in the upper right hand side of any of our posts to send us an e-mail.

Again, welcome and happy posting!
Hi there! Welcome to TORC... I hope you find everything you need - I am sure you will if you follow the links in Ateelah's first post. It makes life easier if you know the roolz <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

We have lots of Aussies and Kiwis here at Torc... if you ever thought of writing - go check out Lady Coralies Reading Room. Lady Coralie hails from Australia....

Hope to see you around the boards.. and check in when you have more questions.

Hi Ateelah <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

Thanks everyone. I did read the introduction thingy in the end, so I worked it out, but initially the wording in that first post made it sound like something for those interested in RPGs -- I am not in the least. Again, thanks for telling me and not getting annoyed.

Cathryn

Cathryn, we never get annoyed!

The posts we link to are very informative and I feel once you know the ground rules, you can make your choices and enjoy the boards without someone being "snippy" to a nOOb.

Good luck and have some fun with it <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Ateelah.. I can't wait to get out west again.. next visit scheduled for May! As Mammo said, we're here to answer questions so we don't really get annoyed. We'd rather you asked here than in, say, Movies, where you might not get the answer you're looking for! Seriously, even if you feel like someone has probably asked something before, don't be shy, ask us! If it's a question we haven't dealt with before, we all benefit by finding the answer.

I'm looking forward to your next visit, too, Mammo! I'm hoping that the weather behaves and doesn't give us unseasonably warm temperatures! It has happened. One Memorial Day weekend Amber was playing in an International Field Hockey Tournament and they were carting people off the fields in ambulances because of the record heat. It was really miserable! Keeping my fingers crossed that the weather behaves.

Just checking in to see how everyone is doing. We're getting fairly close to 500 posts in this thread, at which point it will be locked and we'll start a new one. We probably need to think about locking this one anyway and just starting a new one. Alys, Mammo? Have any opinions on this?

Let me know...

Not much activity here lately but, with the introduction of the new board, I had to go in and do a minor rewrite on my opening post, clean up the links, etc. This format is similar to other MB's so the use of it shouldn't be too difficult for members familiar with MB's on other sites. However, it is not as user-friendly for the first-timer so, if you feel overwhelmed by the changes, please don't hesitate to contact us, or post a question here. If we don't know the answer, we will do our best to find the answer for you.

I thought I would try out the new color feature... :D

I am a newbie. I've been here a few days and have already posted a few things but I am feeling lonely because the only person I even sorta know is Strange-Elf. I was looking at your adoption resume and it sounded like ya'll would be cool ''parents''.lol.Starr. :P

I must apologize for not responding sooner. Responses to this thread used to generate an e-mail to me but things have apparently changed and I didn't realize that anyone had posted to it. I promise to check it more often, just in case I don't get the e-mail.

Hugs "Tjeerd"!

It's good to see you again! How are you doing?

I haven't been as active here as I used to be. We've had some computer problems at home & I'm a lot busier at work so it's been hard to get online.

It appears that I'm now getting e-mail alerts when someone posts to this thread, so that's a good thing.

Take care, everybody, and Happy Holidays!

I'm not sure why you can no longer see the profiles of members. It may have something to do with the new MB format or it may be as simple as a privacy issue. I'll see what I can find out.

Take care!
