Alys! So good to see you!

I love your new sig pic. Charles Rennie Macintosh was an amazing architect/designer/artist. I've seen pictures of some of his work and he reminds me, in a way, of Frank Lloyd Wright who also had a "holistic" approach to his work. In many of his houses he designed not only the architecture of the house but the furniture and the accessories as well. Both men were extremely conscious of incorporating light and space into their designs. I'd love to see Queen's Cross Church or the Glasgow School of Art in person! I've actually visited one of Wright's homes, "Falling Waters", and was greatly affected by the way he tried to build the house into its surroundings rather than just clearcutting the forest.

Good to see you too Ateelah! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

I'm glad you like my sig - I love MacIntosh too and I thought this picture was really quite Tolkienny too <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

http://www.armin-grewe.com/crm/crm.htm This link has some great pictures of his buildings. I so agree with you about his use of light and space - some of the buildings look quite average from the outside but are amazing on the inside.

I don't know if you have seen the House for an Art Lover? Both it and the Art School are probably my favourits of his, but it was built in the eighties from his original designs and is just gorgeous, especially on a sunny day <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

You must come to Glasgow and visit both them and me! Mammo's making the trip over to the UK in February for our Liverpool moot - so you should give it some serious thought too <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

I still have hopes of a visit to Glasgow, Alys. It will probably be a while before I can get away, but it's definitely one of my goals. I really I'd love to get away from the money pit but the best I can do for now is a virtual vacation! In any case, I'll be with you both in spirit if not in body!

Braganil..... The One Ring.Net TORN

I believe we used to be Theonering.com but the name was too close.... so it was changed to Tolkienonline.com. In fact, my daughter, Vynaca of Mirkwood first found TORN in 2001 and hit .com instead of .net and so found TORC by accident. She of course realized instantly how superior TORC was and never looked back <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

Next ???

Welcome, Bifur! It looks like you have quite a few posts under your belt already but all are welcome at MAAMA! Unfortunately, everyone is required to do their own laundry but you're welcome to use the washer anytime.

Braganil, that's an interesting question about the potatoes. It does appear to be an anachronism. I'll see what I can find out for you.

If we don't appear to answer right away, please be patient. I do subscribe to this thread so I usually check it when I get an e-mail update. I had plumbing problems with my house this weekend which involved several trips to Home Depot and took away time I might have had to get online. In any case, don't hesitate to e-mail any one of us if you have something urgent to discuss.

Hrrrrrmm well Bifur, as you seen to be the oldest one here I nominate you, as the responsible adult, to take charge of all the potentially dangerous household items - including, but not limited to, the iron, the washing machine, the hoover, the cooker and the dishcloth (oh sooo very dangerous in the wrong hands that one! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-shocked.gif"border=0>) It's such a relief to have you here as things were really beginning to pile up! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

Yes Braggy potatoes could be considered to be out of time in ME but as Mr.T wrote the books and made the place up I suppose we can let him off <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

Well I'm Back!

See everything is still hopping round here. I flew home today and the airline magazine was running an article on Viggo's performance in ROTK and how he should be a front runner for an Oscar.

Then it gave TORN as a reference for further reading! YUK!

Hello, ladies! I feel rather silly asking you to "adopt" me, as I have four children of my own (only two Ringers, alas), but you can see from my number of posts that I am indeed a newbie here! (My first post was a passionate thank-you to Marty for his spoiler-filled ROTK thread. I just got caught up in the heat of the moment and spammed him -- mea culpa, mea maxima culpa. It will not happen again, altho' I kinda like Marty!)

Anyway, I now live in snowy upstate New York, but when my son graduates in a couple of years, I'm thinking about moving to Scotland or New Zealand. I first read Tolkien's FOTR many years ago (well, okay, it was like yesterday in elf years). I think Peter Jackson's done a marvelous job with the movies, all things considered. My favorite character has always been Frodo. My other favorite authors, at the moment, are Diana Gabaldon and Barbara Kingsolver. I have two cats named Vader and Lucky, and a car named Lola.

As for questions... I've never role-played, but it looks like fun. How does one jump into the fray?

Are there any plans for a 2004 gathering similar to the Toronto one scheduled for next week? I'm afraid it's a little too late for me to make plans for Toronto next week, but it sounds like a wicked good time!

Oh... and what does MOME stand for? Mouth of Middle Earth? Mostly Online Muse-Educators?

Hi Eolynne,

Welcome to Torc - what a great introduction you posted! I can surely sympathize with the snowy New York as I am house bound in snowy Connecticut right now.

As you might have guessed from the thread, Alys is in Scotland and Ateelah is in California! We have pretty good geographical coverage here! Talk to Alys about Scotland - I used to live just on the south side of the Scottish border and one of my closest friends is from the Highlands. It is a beautiful country.

As for New Zealand, I would love to visit it one day.

Braganil just started posting at Torc and asked about RP too. I am not involved in Role Playing but I got some answers for Braganil and I will dig them up for you. Braganil! if you want to jump in and help out here, be my guest <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

MOME stands for Men of Middle Earth. It was a male beauty pageant that we resurrected this year to fill out the long month of October ( when the wait for the release of TTT or ROTK becomes unbearable.) I am not sure if contestants and contributors need to be applauded or committed but it was fun. Hey! I got to share a hot tub with Boromir <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

As to the Gathering, I don't think that there are plans for another but who knows. I am sure if it is sucessful, those attending will want to repeat the occasion. Many bands of TORCer's meet online friends on a regular basis in real life. Check out the Bird and the Baby forum or the Events forum. The Brits have "moots" on a regular basis and pick up noobies to add to the fold every time.

Enjoy yourself - there are some wonderful people here. Read Ateelah's first post in this thread, it will give you links to the TOS and some good advice about TORC. Just read the entire thread before you post and get a feel for the content - serious, humorous etc etc. You will do just fine. Marty's thread was a great one to start with. It is driving me crazy as I want to read it but I am avoiding spoilers <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-blush.gif"border=0>

I will get you some RP information. In the meantime, have fun!

Hello Eolynne! Welcome to TORC. Like you I ma a n00bie and am still trying to find my footing around here. Ingeneral, poeple are friendly and don't bite... too hard (watch out for the movie forum though!<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>)

As for RPGing - I think it is usually a BAD ides to just jump into any game here as most games are VERY involved and long and intricate. As i found out myself - the onyl way to get into a RPG is beginning to read the thread of one! I started selecting a game that had relatively few posts and thus it didn't take me a long time to red through that thread and understand the premise of the game. also, most games have A word aside threads, which are OOC threads where you can ask questions regarding the game. Don#t be afraid to ask, read the first opening posts of the OOC threads and then simply ask.

Apart from the short game I entered I also was lucky enough to be around when a new light game started, so that is another possibility to get into a game. OR, there is one here in Adoptions (a pub type game?) where you can just jump in and get to know poeple and who then maybe recommend otehr games to you.

Hope this helped?<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Welcome to TORC and MAAMA, Eolynne! I hope you're finding your visits pleasant. I'm sure you've learned that there are sharks in the Movies forum, but if you take your time in there you shouldn't get bitten too badly! If you do have any questions, or problems, related to TORC, please don't hesitate to post here or e-mail Mammo, Alys or myself. You'll find our e-mail addy's if you click on the glasses in the upper right hand side of any of our posts.

I subscribe to this thread so I get an e-mail any time anybody posts in it but I can't always access my e-mail at work. My computer at work has been really sluggish lately but I'll do my best! Just be patient and one of us should be able to help you out.

The initial post in my thread has some helpful links to threads which answer frequently asked questions but feel free to ask about anything you don't feel comfortable with. There are no stupid questions in this forum!

Again, welcome and happy posting!

Hello all.I'm not sure what i need to do to be adopted.<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-confused.gif"border=0>
I'm still trying to get my bearings around here.I have been hanging around the movie forum the last month or so and that's been well um interesting lol.
Anyway I have to admit the movies have inspired me to read the books.I have read most of the return of the king minus some of the appendices. Not sure when i'll sink my teeth into fellowship yet.
Well that should cover it for the time being looking forward to getting to know some of you folks and learning the ropes around here.
Cheers <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

Welcome to TORC & MAAMA, kingofthedead! The first step to being adopted is to post in an adoption thread, which you've already done. The second thing is to read the first post in this thread which has helpful information and links to other threads with additional info. You don't have to read every post in this thread, but the first one is a good place to start.

As for pictures in our sigs, you need to get Premiere Membership(PM) to be able to have a picture. You can find information for PM here.

Also, if you need to add anything to a post you've already made, you can click on the EDIT button under your post. Multiple posting in a row is regarded as spamming and is frowned upon by the moderators (mods) and administrators. However, we have all had accidental double or sometimes triple posts when TORC is having a problem. That's an unintentional phenomenon that we have no control over. It helps, though, if that happens to you, to edit the extra posts so that the same message doesn't appear in all of them. You can say, "Oops!" or "DP! Sorry!" or just edit out the text entirely.

Again, welcome to TORC! If you have any other questions, you can post them here or, if you need advice a little more quickly, you can e-mail Mammo, Alys or me by clicking on the little glasses in the upper right hand corner of any of our posts. That will give you our e-mail addresses.

Hi King of the Dead and Welcome to TORC.

Yes Movies has been an interesting place for the past couple of weeks and you are wise to lurk a little! The forum has a reputation for being harsh with brash newcomers. However you will find kindness, humor, insight and an amazing passion for Tolkien both as represented by Peter Jackson in the movies and in the original books.

Don't be put off by the frantic posting that is going on now.. everyone will calm down... find a topic that interests you and read the entire thread - then post your point of view... simple as that.

Looking forward to seeing you around. Email anytime you have a question or post here. Enjoy!

B25, I'm glad you liked it! It kind of reminded me of some of my favorite "Calvin & Hobbes" comic strips.

I hope you all have had a lovely holiday. I'll be off this week but havent' decided yet what I'm going to do, if anything. I completely crashed on Friday, did absolutely nothing, dozed on and off, took a nap, & didn't even make dinner. It was great! We had a very pleasant but tiring visit Christmas Eve with my husband's family in LA. It went fairly well, considering it's the first Christmas without his mom.

I hope you all have a safe and happy New Year's Eve!

Hello! It is I the evil seed of ateelah! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-devil.gif"border=0> Hi Moogie!!! I now have motivation to continue to post here again because my parents bought me a premium membership! I was so excited! The only problem now is I don't know where to post, I suppose I will just post here and my moms chat thread and then lurk around.

Welcome to TORC & MAAMA, Eowilinde and Telgerond! I'm sure the others will be along to welcome you when they have a chance.

To answer your question, Eowilinde, if you go into "my settings" you can change how you want to view the threads and the posts within a thread. You can set it up to have the latest posts displayed first. I like my posts in chronological order so I have the newest post at the end of the thread, you can change your settings so the newest post shows up first. You can also change how many threads you see when you go into a forum, how many days/months back are displayed, and so forth. I have my preferences set to display 50 threads in a forum and 35 posts in a thread per page. So, when I log in, the number of pages in a thread changes because the number of posts I want to view per page changes from 25 to 35. I think 25 is the default for how many threads you can view at one time in a forum as well. It should be fairly easy to change, but if you have any questions about it, don't hesitate to ask.

Welcome to MAAMA, ShadowMist! I see you're enjoying your new PM already!

Happy New Year, folks!

Mae govannen, one and all, and a Happy New Year!

I must confess, I *am* a UK newbie, but I've read all the relevant information. From what I can make out, I should get myself adopted. I've seen all three LOTR films now {not to mention having read the book 14 or 15 times - I lost count <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-blush.gif"border=0> } and I'm desperate for someone to talk/chat/type to about Middle-earth and LOTR. I guess I'm hoping that one of you will adopt me! By the way, TORC seems very friendly and welcoming.

Anyway, I guess I should finish now - I don't want to bore you all before I even get warmed up.
