Hiya!

My name is Hobbituk but my friends call me Hobbi!

This is my brand-spanking new adoption thread and im looking forward to meeting some new TORCERS, helping out where I can in answering any questions you may have in regards to this amazing (and sometimes confusing) place and making yet more fantastic friends!

To tell you a little about me, Im just 19 years old and live in Yorkshire, England. In my spare time, when I am not at TORC, I read and write more than is good for me and I play drums in a great band.

I have a keen interest in TORC's Collaborative writing (or Role Play)and in fact was named MALE ROLE PLAYER OF THE YEAR at the White Council Awards (TORC's recognition of outstanding posting) whilst one of the 'Threads' I wrote in won the award for Best Thread.

I'll be happy to give direction to anyone who fancies giving it a go.

Other than the RP at TORC I like to check out just about every area I can but the majority of my posts are made in The Bird and Baby and the Welcome Forum. I have to confess that until now I have not adopted before although as co-owner of The Lucky Fortune Inn I have been trying to make as many newbies as possible feel comfortable for over two years now!

so, if you want any help off a little hobbit who is coming up to his three year anniversary later this year, then come on in to my warm and homely house, make yourself comfortable, put your feet up and lets have a bit of a chinwag!

Hobbi's Adoptees...

Byronie

Daughter_of_Arwen

~Eoweniel~

Tar-Vanimelde

icclehobbit

LadyHawke

Asanorain

Kyanduil

tee_tookins

Jaeniver

NallaElf

Pez_Wreckless

Cenandil

Aranel_Sarlonde

Earundra

Nîlo

BeAragorn

Evenstar117

minachao13

arwen_elvenprincess

TheOddHobbit

Frodo23

Marie

Nimue_Greenwood
Great<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> I applied for Nottingham, but I decided that I would rather stay local. I commute every day to Bradford every day from Halifax which is hard enough as it is<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Now then, for the really boring stuff...

To get a good understanding of what TORC is and what it is all about, there are a couple of things you should read through if you have a moment. Many people make the mistake of jumping in without reading this stuff and inevitably make mistakes which can be hard to make up for. So I really do recommend you read,

Message of Welcome

and

Introduction to TORC

Also, if you are at all interested in Role Play (collaborative writing) then before you begin starting any stories or joining in anyway you need to read this thread...

Guidelines and Rules for Role Playing

...because the guidelines for RP here can be quite strict to ensure good quality. If you've never done it before then I really do suggest you give it a go! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> I'd never done it before I came here but I quickly found how much fun it is. If you like writing you will find that it can help improve yourself.

Once you've read that, you should check out my main Hangout!

The Lucky Fortune Inn

I post there very reguarly. It's a place for people new to the site and new to RP to get used to their character in a social environment. Check it out!<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

If you're not interested in that sort of thing, then there's a whole world of Movie forums and Talk forums out there for ya at TORC<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>
The role playing forums seem at bit intimidating at the moment, guess it will take me a while to pluck up the courge and not be shy.
What does the "votes" thing mean under the number of posts people made and renown?

Thats okay. If you're intimidated by Roleplaying then The Lucky Fortune Inn is a good place to start. We dont mind if you make mistakes!

The renown and votes thing is pretty complicated and is actually a very recent addition here. I may be wrong, but I believe renown supposedly gives a poster status aside from their postcount. It uses some forumla calculated by the amount of posts, the amount of visits and the length of memberships. It means that if someone posts a lot over a short period of time, they will have a large postcount but a much lower renown. I think the ideal is to have a larger renown than postcount...but dont quote me on that!<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> confused yet?

The votes thing is calculated from renown and as far as I know is no longer usable. There used to be a way to rate a thread or post by how useful you found it and the amount of votes you had was the amount of times you could rate a thread or post per day.

all very complicated but I shall see if I can find a thread for you which might explain it better!

and I will IM ya if I see you on!<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Thats another reason why i didnt go this year because I keep changing my mind. I did want to do classical civilisation and philosopy but I also want to do film studies and photograghy so I am well confused!

Another question for you.. under my name I have "petitioner to the council" which is suspose to mean? Does this change eventually, because i can obvioulsy see that people who have been on this site alot have different names, e.g you being a Ranger of the North.

byronie: The 'Petitioner to the Council'.etc business is based on your post count. As your post count increases, your title will change. When you reach 500 you become a Rider of Rohan and get a little Horsey(<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>) shield to match, and then at 1000 you become a Ranger of the North. at 5000 you become a Mariner and at 10,000 you become a Ringbearer (although there are precious few of these!)

I seem to have been a Ranger of the North FOREVER!! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

Daughter_of_Arwen, it would be an honour to adopt you. First of all, you will need to edit your post to remove your age as under 18s are not allowed to post their ages. This for your protection<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> - you dont know what weirdos might be hanging about (although as far as I know TORC has so far been relatively safe.
Funny you should come from Shropshire as that is where my girlfriend lives! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> She tells me it is quite a nice place<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

It is quite daunting here at first, but relax and make yourself comfortable. Have a look around before you start posting properly and have a look at those links I posted above. It may look dull, but it will help you become more confident in your posting when you know what is and what is not allowed<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

The renown thing confuses even me as it is a very new addition. When I have a moment I will find a thread which explains it more clearly<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

As for people not being nice to newbies. Usually what happens is that a new member will turn up and start a thread on a topic that has been discussed to death, or will ask a question that has been asked a thousand times or will make mistakes in grammar, punctuation and spelling. Often the new person will get teased or picked on for this. There are ways to avoid this happening to you...before you start a thread (particularly in the movies and books forums) do a quick search with some keywords to see if you can find a thread which covers your question or topic. Also, try to be clear and concise. You seem to have good spelling, punctuation and grammar so dont worry about that one<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>
Many messageboards welcome netspeak and that sort of thing, but hear it is generally frowned upon as lazyness.<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

so the best thing is to take your time, pause to think before starting new threads and make sure you are within the Terms of Service<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Of course some people are horrid to newbies out of spite. Just ignore these silly old sods<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>
Thank you.

Whereabouts in Shropshire does your girlfriend live? Indeed it is a nice place, if a little boring!

Are there any particular rules about writing stories to put on the reading room that arent mentioned anywhere? I am currently writing one and basically need advice!

I really have to write 500 posts to get a little horsey thing?!

Thanks again

She lives in a place called Ludlow(I think!..or near there anyway)<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Im not sure about restrictions on the reading room as I have never posted anything in there. I have, however, posted a beginning of a short story in the Scriptotorium Forum. You can find this by going to the main forum page and scrolling down. Its one nearer the bottom I think.
It is a good place to post things because you will usually get very valuable constructive criticism from others there, some of whom are excellent writers themselves. When I posted there, there was a poster called Glooskap who gave me some very helpful advice. Im not sure if hes still around but if he is then what he has to say about your work will be very useful to you. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> I cant wait to read it myself<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

500 posts seems like a lot but it passes usually quite quickly. Whatever you do, do not try to rush to get there by posting pointless things to boost your count. Postcount is no mark of distinction here nowadays anyway.

(oh and you still need to edit your age out of that post!)<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

but aside from all that, are you both enjoying your TORC experiences so far?<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

I am a newbie! I need help.....lol! Will you adopt me?????? I am "new" Tolkien fan. Had never read the books before seeing the movie, but I am amazed by his writing. I am ready to meet some other fans!

It doesn't really matter which way you read the books and saw the film round here. But I do find it interesting! Tell me, were you able to imagine your own ideas of what characters and things looked like, or did you see everything the same as in the film?<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Well, you know all about me if you've read the first page.
why don't you tell us a little more about yourself?<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>
