Forgive the lame title, <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0> but indeed, my name is *E* and I am here to help you settle into Tolkien Online and to make sure your stay is as pleasant as possible.

Whether you've been a member for a few hours, days, or weeks, I am sure you have noticed how huge this site is. It is more than easy to be overwhelmed with all this new information, and that is why I would like to help you. Tolkien Online is very much like a small city, and therefore you can think of this thread as a small family. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> During your time here, you will make friends and meet many new people. I hope that you will enjoy yourself here, because in my six months, I have had a ball. I look forward to many more months ahead of me. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

I'd like to give you a short run-down of this site and a few links to threads that contain valuable information. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

First off, you are now a TORCer. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> The old address for this site was theonering.com, and even though we have a new address, the name still sticks. So, welcome to TORC. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

You may be wondering what are all those swords and shields sitting underneath everyone's username. They are used to show people's post count. Here is what each symbol represents:

sword = 10 posts

diamond = 50 posts

red shield = 100 posts

green Rohan shield = 500 posts

black Gondor shield = 1,000 posts

blue Mariners shield = 5,000 posts

the One Ring = 10,000 posts

Also, certain amounts of posts get you certain titles:

0 = Petitioner to the Council

20 = Citizen of Imladris

100 = Shield Bearer

500 = Rider of the Mark

1,000 = Ranger of the North

5,000 = Mariner

10,000 = Ringbearer

One of my favorite things to use when posting are the emoticons. They include cute little smiley faces, devils, winks, and many other emotions. They can really help sometimes - if you are joking around, use the wink, if you say something naughty, use the devil, if you make a mistake, use the embarrassed emoticon, etc. Here's the gang, and what their code is: (without the spaces, of course)

<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-blush.gif"border=0> (embarrassment) = : o

<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> (big grin) = : D

<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-mad.gif"border=0> (mad) = : |

<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif"border=0> (frown) = : (

<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-shocked.gif"border=0> (shocked) = : Q

<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> (smile) = : )

<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0> (wink) = ; )

<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif"border=0> (tongue) = : P

<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-devil.gif"border=0> (devil) = = : )

<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-confused.gif"border=0> (confused) = % (

<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-crying.gif"border=0> (crying) = : ' (

<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-cool.gif"border=0> (cool) = 8 ^

<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-rolleyes.gif"border=0> (rolling eyes) = B ^

Now, those are just the very basics that only take a minute to learn. For a complete introduction to Tolkien Online, it is important for you to visit <a target="_blank" href="http://www.tolkienonline.com/thewhitecouncil/messageview.cfm?catid=30&threadid=23795"]this thread[/l]. Almost everything you need to know about this site is in there. I even try to visit every once in a while, just to brush up. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> It would be beneficial to drop by <a target="_blank" href="http://www.tolkienonline.com/thewhitecouncil/messageview.cfm?catid=30&threadid=44204"]the Guidelines of Conduct[/l]. Most of it is common sense but you should still make yourself familiar with it. You don't want to be trolling and not know it. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-shocked.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0> Which brings me to the <a target="_blank" href="http://www.tolkienonline.com/thewhitecouncil/tos.cfm"]Terms of Service[/l]. These are the rules we abide by at TORC. It is a short and sweet list of the kinds of things we encourage, and what we dissuade. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

However, there is so much information your head might be spinning. That's where I come in. I'll break down anything you need an explanation to. You are more than free to ask questions. When I first joined, I was too shy. Please, don't be like that. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> Speak right up and I'll answer to the best of my ability. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Well, if you've read this far, and are thinking you would like to be adopted, perhaps you would like to know a few things about this mysterious monosyllabic adopter? <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> As you can see, my name is quite long, and I don't expect anyone to type it out, so you may call me *E*, Evenstar, Evie, or whatever comes to mind. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> I am 18 years old and a proud graduate of the class of 2002. I live in Atlantic Canada and my life's passion is movies. I'm not sure what I want to do with my life - there is so much I'm interested in it's hard to narrow it down to one career. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0> I enjoy reading, cooking, telling jokes, and being on TORC.

I am here all the time, and love to hang out with everyone, so you can be sure I will update this thread whenever needed. Welcome to the club, cherbarina. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> You may ask me anything you'd like. Right now I would like to mention a few things I've learned make the boards a more pleasant place to be:

-Refrain from using netspeak. This is using phrases like, "anyone," "g2g," "kewl," etc. It is not against our rules, but it does annoy the other posters, and for those who don't speak English as a first language, it is tough to decifer. It's tough for those of us who do speak English as a first language to decifer! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> It is courteous to use full sentences and proper spelling (though, even the best sometimes misspell a word or two). <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-blush.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

-No spamming. You cannot advertise for other websites. You may give links to them, but do not outright say, "visit my webpage!" <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0> Spamming is also posting multiple messages in a row. Double-posts happen every now and again, but in that case, do NOT post another message saying you double-posted. That would be a triple-post, wouldn't it? <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif"border=0> In the bottom right-hand corner of all of your posts is an "edit" button. If you click on this you can change your message. This is useful in general, not just for double-posts.

-No duplicate threads. At Tolkien Online there are over 28,000 users who have posted over 1.4 million messages in over 55,000 threads...... often, something has already been said. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> I urge you to do a search before starting a new thread. If you look at the very top of every page, you will see several buttons: my settings, my info, register, search, forums, help, logout. When you click on "search", you are able to type in a key word or words to look for threads in our archives. This prompts me to tell you that if you do start a new thread, use a relevant title. Don't make everyone have to click on it to read what it's about. How is someone supposed to search for Elijah Wood if the thread is called, "come look at this"? <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0> Duplicate threads are locked fairly quickly.

-No trolling. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0> I understand that sometimes a post can get misconstrued as being nasty when it was meant to be a joke, but trolling is someone deliberately being mean. Or when they say an inflammatory remark just to get a reaction out of people. I know this doesn't apply to most of you, but it is good to know nonetheless. If you see a troll, contact one of the Moderators of this site - they are trained to deal with those sorts of things. Give a link to the thread and if needed, they will take appropriate action against the troll in question. We've gotten rid of a few nuisances this way. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

That being said, here is a list of the Moderators of Tolkien Online:

The Administration (designers of the site)

Ted (ted@tolkienonline.com)

Jonathan (jonathan@tolkienonline.com)

DavidM (david@tolkienonline.com)

The Moderators (make sure everyone's on their best behavior) <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

ElvenArcher (ElvenArcher3@aol.com)

InnocentEvil (InnocentEvil@tolkienonline.com)

Kestrel (I'll get back to you on this one)

Eluchil (eluchil404@yahoo.com)

The_Grey_Pilgrim (tgp@tolkienonline.com)

OrcOverseer (orcoverseer@tolkienonline.com)

mandos (mandos@tolkienonline.com)

Telemachos (telemachos@tolkienonline.com)

crispycreme (crispycreme@tolklienonline.com)

Running-Deer (Running-Deer@tolkienonline.com)

Rogue Moderator (operates in "stealth mode"<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0> <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-devil.gif"border=0>

Shadowjack (Shadow-Jack@charter.net)

Thorondor (I'll get back to you on this one)

Nilson_The_White (Nilson_The_White@tolkienonline.com)

FrodoTook (frodo1@yadtel.net)

sandra (Sandmist72@hotmail.com)

Barad_dur (Barad_dur@tolkienonline.com)

Elbren (ElbrenGaladrim@tolkienonline.com)

ThreadStalker (ThreadStalker@aol.com)

Treat them with respect and their orders must be followed. Some are around more than others, and in this forum in particular, you will see InnocentEvil, Running-Deer, and ThreadStalker. Also, some of them have more than one account, so you may see other Mods named jsavfusco, AdoptionCommittee, Adurant, Mary Poppins, and a few others. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

This place may seem intimidating at first, but I'll tell you this: I've seen lots of newbies come and go. Some post once and never return. Some violate all the ToS rules just to cause problems. Others time and time again spam the boards and post duplicate threads. These people just get on everybody's nerves. Unfortunately, most of the time they just don't know any better. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif"border=0> I would like to do whatever I can to help you guys get acquainted with TORC so that when you go out into other parts of the messageboards, you enjoy it as much as everybody else (with as little friction as possible). <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

There is much to learn and even more to see, so any questions you might have, feel free to ask. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

*E*

Hello *E*
well met again! And thanks for all those smiley explanations - you definitely enlightened me there !
But one question - what is all this adoption thing all about? Who adobts who and what for? - excuse my ignorance, although I've been around for a couple of weeks but this is news to me...

Humbly
Alandriel

Hi, there! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> How are the pictures coming along? I left a few comments in the ones that were submitted to TORC (mostly the Aragorn ones). <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

Oh, you're not being ignorant. Even I didn't fully grasp the concept of adoption until a month or two ago. By that time there were already plans to start a new forum, so I figured I better wait for that. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

You see, adoption is just someone new to the site who is looking for advice (and may be a little timid), being taken under the wing of someone who has more experience on the boards. There's more to it than that, of course.

Up until now, all the adoption threads were found in the Welcome forum, but since there were no guidelines, people who may not have been the best adopters were opening up threads and passing on their bad attitudes to other posters who didn't know any better. The administration got sick of it and decided to set some ground rules for the adopters. Luckily, I met their qualifications and was able to open this thread. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

We are here to enlighten the folks new to the site, and if they'd like to be adopted, they just leave a post and let the adopter know they are looking for guidance. Don't feel silly about just finding this out. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif"border=0> There is so much to do here you will find new stuff all the time. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> If there's anything else I can help you out with, just let me know. I am at your beckon call. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

*E*

Yeah I love this place!! I've been on this board the whole day!! My favorite forums are Tolkien Virgin, Fandom, The Book, and Writing. And some stuff about me, well....I'm 19, I live in MA, senior, and a die-hard Tolkien fan. No, I mean it, Middle-Earth and all the history and characters are my life <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-shocked.gif"border=0> . I plan to go to college and master in Film and Arts.
My favorite LOTR characters are Aragorn and Sam. My favorite chapter in LOTR is Siege of Gondor. My name "Bramblerose Gamgee" is my hobbit name which I found out from a website. I'm glad you're adopting me, this place is confusing!!

It is confusing sometimes. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> You'll get the hang of it soon enough. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

I know what you mean about spending all day at TORC. Today I was logged in for thirteen hours. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-blush.gif"border=0> It's so weird that only nine months ago I was just going along as normal and then BAM! LOTR came into my life. Unlike other things I've loved, there is so much to keep my interest in LOTR. There are movies, books, poems, paintings, songs, actors, cartoons, action figures, and much more. Lord of the Rings isn't a hobby, it's a lifestyle. I think it's wonderful that something can touch our lives like that, and I am reminded by that every day I come here. We have such a great group of people coming to TORC and I love that we all have something in common. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

I hope you go through with your college plans. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> Filmmaking can be a very rewarding occupation. One of our Mods, Tele, is a film editor working on a project right now. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> Also, Marty, who runs a huge thread in the LOTR movies forum, just got his SAG card. He is now a part of the Screen Actors Guild and will be helping TTT to get votes come awards season. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

I think I like movie Aragorn better than book Aragorn, but my memory is slightly shady when it comes to the book. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-blush.gif"border=0> I'm so embarrassed about that. I loved it, but read it too fast to absorb everything. I'm reading it again and am really enjoying it this time through. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> My favorites were Gollum (what a great character) and Treebeard (who I love to just listen to). <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> I think my favorite chapter is the Pelennor Fields because there were some great surprises there. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

*E*

Hello *E*
thanks for your answer. It's really nice to have some nice people around like yourself. Thanks for taking the time.
And since I am at it - do you mind two more questions:

1. when I reply to a thread I can subscribe to it by ticking the box. But how do I unsubscribe again? Since I don't have the luxury of spending endless hours on TORC (wishful thinking) it's easier for me that way to keep up with things. But then I end up subscribing to hundreds of threads - and the email swamp is just too much. So, how do I go about unsubscribing??

2. when I want to insert links into a message without it showing the address, how do I do that?

As for the pics - you should really check out my news section
(now I would like to highlight that without the link showing but since I am still an ignoramus I have to do it just like that)
http://uk.geocities.com/aragorn_elessendil/News.htm

Tons of new stuff - you might especially enjoy the new Aragorn wallpapers.

Thanks again for being around

Alandriel

Aragorn wallpapers? *runs* Count me in! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

alandriel, it's my job to answer your questions and offer help where help is needed. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> I don't mind any amount of questions you have. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

1. Unsubscribing to a thread is easy. At the top right hand corner of every post is an icon: a piece of paper folded at the top and there's an arrow pointing to the left. Click on it and you will find a list of all the threads you are subscribed to. I'm not 100% sure what order they are listed in (it doesn't seem to be alphabetical, or from most recent to oldest) but if you read through, you will find the threads you're looking for. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> The great thing about this feature is that you don't have to be in the thread you want to unsubscribe to, to unsubscribe to it. It doesn't even have to be one of your own posts. As long as you click on that icon, you can find your list.

2. I'm guessing the code you use for links is this (without the spaces):

[ L]the address of the link[/L]

To put up a "fancy" link, <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif"border=0> you need to use this code:

[ L url="the address"]what you are naming it[/L]

Note: there is no space between the "[" and the "L", but there is a space between the "L" and the "url". <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Welcome aboard, Elirranel! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> To answer your question, when you subscribe to a thread, you will get an e-mail notifying you that the thread has been updated. Every time that thread gets a new response, you will be e-mailed. Now, sometimes the e-mails can pile up (as was the case with alandriel) and to unsubscribe to a thread, simply follow the directions I gave above. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>
With the renown and votes, I suggest you visit this thread:
Renown, Votes, Ratings - What are these? ANSWERS HERE!
Earnil has prepared a lot of information to describe what they all mean. However, as of late, the votes do not work, so some of the information is useless. If they ever bring it back, you may as well know how it works. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> You see how underneath my alliance and username, it says I have 7 votes? That just means that I can give no more than seven votes per day.
The renown is still in effect, though. Your renown is calculated by a formula that figures in how long you've been a member, how often you visit, and how many posts you have. You will notice that Mods and the administration have more renown than the others, because those positions increase their renown. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>
When it comes to Celeborn month, <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> I recommend you visit this thread. Most of the people there having been doing their part through the use of their signatures (the pictures and text attached to their posts). All you have to do is join in the conversation and they will help you find ways to support "the cause" <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif"border=0> without a signature. It is a great thread - all month they've been digging up info on the character, the actor who plays him in the movie, writing Celeborn poetry, and other extremely creative activities. I really enjoy reading it. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>
If you'd like to prepare for next month, we are having a MOME competition - Males of Middle-earth. It's a pageant and everybody sponsors one person. I have dibs on the cave-troll. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> You can read about it here. There are a couple of contestants who also don’t have signatures, so you are more than welcome to participate in it. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> I would skip to the last pages, though. The thread is right now being used to sign in sponsors, (there are still many characters left to chose from) and other further planning. Once October rolls around, a new thread will be set up for the actual competition. If you'd rather not participate, they are looking for judges as well. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>
*E*
Hello *E*
Here I come buggin you again <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>
I checked out your link to the MOME competition for next month but I must admitt, I am seriously confused. I'd love to take part in in but don't get the bottomline at all.
Anybody can sponser a character from LotR (eg. for me that would be Aragorn of course) and then some judges vote on that? Isn't that almost like the FotR last survivor thread we had (and I enjoyed that one trememdously)
Beggin for enlightment on the issue
Alandriel
I must admit, I've never read the FOTR survivor thread, so I do not know the point of it. MOME however, is pretty much the same as Celeborn month, except every user only gets to do one character, and every character can only be sponsored by one user. Unfortunately, Aragorn is already taken by Vynaca/bernil (they are the same person... or so the legends go). <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> If you read the last few pages, you will find a list of all the characters that are already taken, and suggestions for other that are still up for grabs.
Once MOME month gets underway, there are going to be different categories and different titles to be bestowed. I believe there is going to be a swimsuit competition. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> Everyone who has signatures is going to use those for pictures of their sponsors, and the judges will determine the best ones at the end of the month. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> I hope that clears it up a bit. If not, all you need to know is this:
It's just for fun! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>
*E*
lol, TORC addiction is my forté. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0> I think we all know the feeling! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>
The MOME thread ("What Cometh After Celeborn"<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0> was busy last night. Congrats on getting your sword. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> Now you're only 1/1,000th of the way to becoming a Ringbearer! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>
The alliance/guild forum is perhaps the most varied of all forums. In a nutshell, it is for people with similar interests to gather and chat about a common topic. For example, I am part of a number of guilds: the food guild (all we talk about is food we like and sometimes exchange recipes), Canadian guild (hockey and donuts - OH YEAH!), <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> The Simpsons lovers' guild (all about the show and it's best quotes), plus several others. There are also many guilds for role-playing.
I have not visited all of them (many are rather large, as you have noticed), <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0> but I will give you a link to a complete list of all the alliances and guilds in the forum:
THE LIST of Alliances & Guilds *Guild Picks of the Month updated!
Take a look around - always make sure to read the first post. Some guilds are more welcoming to new members than others. Perhaps read through some of the pages to get an idea of the things they are talking about. If one strikes your interest, ask to join and they will give you the "okay" sign. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>
Guilds are a great way to meet people and become friends. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> You already know you share common interests with them, so they're easy to get along with. There are some people I only ever get to talk to in the guilds forum, because they post in different forums than I. Hope this helps. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> Let me know if you need further information.
*E*
That way, I hope it helps you guys to find the ones you would enjoy the most.)
Aloha, Elendilofdark! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> I'm very glad that you've decided to be adopted. I must let off a tiny bit of steam: <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0> since becoming an adopter, I've taken more notice to the habbits and attitudes that new folks seem to have. Some refuse to cooperate, and just sail along doing their own thing. This can cause problems. I have a lot of respect for those who ask to be adopted, because they are making an effort to learn more about the site, which makes a lot of people's jobs easier. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0> Sometimes it bothers me when a newbie strolls into TORC and starts posting duplicate threads, spamming, and all this other stuff. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif"border=0>
That was a whole lot of yammering, <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> but I just wanted to say that I have lots of respect for those of you that come to be adopted. Thank you for taking the time to learn about this site. Being adopted does not mean that you will be babied around and spoken down to, it means that you learn the ropes while making friends at the same time. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> I care a lot for this site, and I'm glad to see new people falling in love with it too. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> It's a great community and we try to keep it that way.
(P.S. Elendil, you and I will work with Dianthelle and see if we can't stop her from putting herself down all the time. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0> I can't wait to read some of her fanfic.) <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>
I swear I'm not always this long-winded... <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif"border=0>
*E*
It is a must-see in the most wonderful sense of the word! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> I was on cloud-nine when I saw it, so if you have not yet had the pleasure, follow this link:
http://progressive.stream.aol.com/aol/us/aolentertainment/movies/2002/lotr/132757_638498_dl.mov
The screen will stay blank, but it is downloading. When its done, the quicktime logo will pop up and all you have to do is press play. It's not fullscreen, but it is large enough (and you won't be complaining once you've actually watched it). <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0> Don't worry, it doesn't give anything away, it's just a taste of things to come. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>
*E*
*E* HELP!!!!
no - hang on it's not quite that bad..... have a cup of tea while you listen to my rambles again.
Was poking around a few threads when I read somebody mentioning something or rather about voting on threads - that we each can do it twice a day (some maybe more...) and that there is a cute little menu on the right hand side of each post.
WELL - I don't see any voting bit, just the 'view profile' 'email thread' and 'subscribe' thingie! So how does this work ????
A totally perplexed
Alandriel <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-blush.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-blush.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-blush.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-blush.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-blush.gif"border=0> and almost forgot <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-rolleyes.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-rolleyes.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-rolleyes.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-rolleyes.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-rolleyes.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-rolleyes.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-rolleyes.gif"border=0>
No prob, alandriel. (Breathe, girl, breathe!) <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif"border=0> We used to be able to vote on threads, but that function hasn't been active in several weeks. I think it was just a trial run. For the most part, people were either indifferent to the votes or didn't care for them at all. The administration have taken it down, but not gotten ride of it completely.
Actually, if you check the first page of this thread, a little more than half-way down, I posted a bit of information on the votes, renown, and rating system. The cute little menu was on the right-hand side, underneath the profile icons, but not any more since we aren't using them. The amount of times someone could vote per day was based on your renown. Most of this stuff you don't have to worry about because we haven't been using it for some time now. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>
*E*
Hi *E*
I had a question so I figured I'd come to your adoption thread <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>
Anyway, I'm thinking about becoming a premiere member, but if I become one and then decide not to stick with it I want to make sure I still keep my name and status and everything. I mean do I just gain and then loose the extra features. I won't have to start over with posts and such? This sounds really stupid, but I'm just wondering. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> Thanks!
Earwen
