I don't know how it goes nowadays, but I just entered there, said what element I wanted for my ring, and gave it a name <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

I was told that only Mods could post an announcement.... And I was also told that EtnwifeLost isn't a mod. But she posted the list of guilds as an Announcement. How can this be?

Didi: because you're addicted to Shimlar, freak. joking. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif"border=0>

Melika!? Whèèère did your Dale-banner go to? <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> Ok, added you again.

Elen-Sil: Blæh <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif"border=0> One of the reasons yes... but this things i post while playing too <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> It's just that nothing happens in my life that I'd want to talk about on this MB, and the Tolkienpart has also become not so important anymore for me, as I told. Perhaps I should just TRY more <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

I see! Good idea that. Since it is very useful and a great idea she had. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Anyway, as I were chatting with you yesterday there was something regarding RP i needed to ask you about.

When I'm continuing an RP I feel I need to go 'back in time' to say something about what Elen Sil did then and not just continue it straight away. I excpiered that when I came back from Tallinn in Estonia. I had to write quite a lot, but I tried not to let it be boring like "ah. I've read this before only with another person!"

I feel it wouldn't be complete if I just skipped a day and never mentioned her at all during 'last night'. But I don't know. Is this making it boring for the other RPers?

Edit: What is RPG for something?

Yeah! I'm sure she'll adopt you!

Well... Welcome lirien (nice name by the way) !

We have also a conversation thread for us and others whom just want to hang around. PM is studying hard and is working... was it two jobs? Okay... Well... I wouldn't call myself a newbie (I just reached 500 posts) but PM helps me with RPing. English is not my native language so I'm really grateful for her help.

But, I can help you whenever I can. We adoptees of PM must stick together and help each other you know <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0> So, what do you need help for?
Elen-Sil: Let me read the New Beginnings rp when I get off work so I can see what you're refering to, and I'll answer your rp question.

RPG stands for "role-playing game" or "role-playing guide". I've never come across this abbreviation on TORC because all of the role-plays are stories, not games with a "winner" or "loser".

lirien, welcome. Be aware of that my english isn't as good as the other RPers... <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-blush.gif"border=0> But, I got 6 on my english exam! 6 is the best one can get. I guess I should have posted this in the conversation thread.. *shame on me* but no-one notices it.

I don't know if PM/Altariel wants to answer this alone, but I can always be here to help!

RP stands for Role Play. Basically, what you do is; make up a charcter, find an RP you want this person to be a part of. You write posts to continue the story. And remember, this is a story, not a game. No one is the winner or looser. PM is better to explain things than, me but I hoped it helped a bit...

Your alliance is Grey Havens and it's good that you have found out how to change that. In Alliances And guils (which is a part of the whole TORC-messageboard system) There are many rare, sometimes extremely weird guilds. People who have the same interests and things in common gather in such a place to descuss that topic. Sometimes it can be a RP-verson light (in my opinion). And sometimes not. Go and take a look and see if anything interests you! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

I'm pretty sure PM kcan give you a better explanation on certain things (especially the RP-part <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> -she's a master) but I hoped it helped you understand a bit more <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

Hi there,

Yet another newbie I'm afraid. I don't know very much about internet communities like this, but I am keen to learn! What is a thread? What is an alliance? Does anyone have the time to help me navigate this overwhelming, yet fascinating site?!
Sorry if I am posing these questions in the wrong place!
Cheers,
Nellas.

Greetings, all. Class is over, and all of the obligatory after-class errands are done, so now i have time to sit and answer questions....

Elen-Sil: It is perfectly acceptable to do "flashbacks" (going back in time) in an rp. If you are concerned about others finding the flashback boring, then have Elen-Sil remember parts of her past that are currently applicable. I will read your rp later to determine the scenario, but if your character, for example, overheard that Easterlings were on the move and had bad memories of Easterlings, you could have her mind wander to her encounter(s) with the Easterlings.

And you don't need to mention what Elen-Sil did "last night" unless it affects one of the other rp'ers or the story. Did she make a discovery the night before that is pertinent (necessary, important) to the plot of the story, etc?

And in answer to your question about Altariel, she is an alter-ego that I created back in September. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> And did I see you post conversation thread material in here? <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-shocked.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-shocked.gif"border=0> *picks up stick to rap Elen-Sil's knuckles with, but relents and puts the twig down* Consider that a warning....<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

Didi and Elen-Sil: Email me, please. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

To all Newbies: In the first post of this thread is a link to the conversation thread; talk about anything you like in there. I'm trying to keep the adoptees thread for questions and lessons only. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

PrincessOfDolAmroth: Roleplaying (rp'ing) is a way for Tolkien Online users to improve their writing skills. In role-playing, each TORC user creates a character (or even several characters) who plays a part in the story. The characters are entered into the rp and contribute to the plot.

"Alliances" have a double meaning on TORC. First of all, your banner shows the alliance in which you are a member. My alliance currently is to numenore; though I am a Dale Lass in truth. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> (Don't ask why I'm dressed in the garb of Numenore, it's a long story. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0> ) Other people are allied to Mordor, Angband, Lorien, or various Houses (Families) such as Elrond or Galadriel. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Secondly, several people have developed threads for people of the same alliance to get to together, called alliance threads. There is one for every alliance--Lorien, Mordor, Dale, etc. What one does in an alliance depends on the alliance itself. Some alliances are role-playing stories. The alliance that I run is the place of role-playing, food fighting, and evil-taunting. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> In order to join an alliance, all you need to do is ask, and whomever runs the alliance should accept you. (If they don't, you tell me RIGHT AWAY.)

I must add that Alliances are NOT to be confused with guids; some TORCer's become rather offended to hear their alliance called a "guild". A guild is a group of people posting in a thread who have similar interests. There is a cat guild and a bird guild and even a donut guild!

Note: Do NOT start a new alliance or guild without determining if there hasn't been an alliance or guild that is devoted to that particular alliance or interest. If you do start a redundant guild; then the Moderators will come and lock it. The search function is what you use in order to determine if a guild has been started on a subject. More on how to search later. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

rhubarb: Welcome. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> Let me break it down for you more specifically than Elen-Sil did. Tolkien Online.Com (TORC) is the name of the website. The Website is made up of different components, including this Messageboard. The Messageboard is made up of different forums (Talk, Alliances and Guilds, Writing, Humor, Adoptions) and each forum is made up of threads. Threads are the component of TORC that you can reply to. You can also start new threads; though I do not reccommend doing this until you search (see response to PODA) and determine if the question that you want to ask has not been asked before. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

How do you search for something on TORC's search page?

First, you must have the search page open. You can find the "search" function on the top bar along with "my settings my info register search forums help logout (or login)" Click on search, or you can right-click and open the search page in a new window, if you wish.

Secondly, enter the search terms---the words that you want to search for in the field under "Search Phrase"

For an example, let's say that we wanted to know if there are any rangers of the north alliances, because we wanted to start an alliance to honor the dunedain, who were the rangers of the north. Let's enter "rangers of the north". Since this is the thread title, we just want the search engine to search titles. You don't know the username, so leave it blank. You can choose so that it shows the newest or the oldest results first. Take your pick.

Now, by default, the search engine searches the Welcome forum. Alliances are not in the welcome forum, but in alliances. However, if you did not know which forum you needed to search, you could hit the "choose all forums button". Since I know that Alliances and Guilds is the proper one in this case, I'll click on the box beside it. (Don't forget to uncheck the check beside the "Welcome" forum)

There are three results in this case: One thread is called the OFFICIAL Rangers of the North Guild; and that one is the most current of the three results, and the one that matches what you are looking for exactly.

**********************

Ok, that's how to find an existing alliance or guild so that you don't pull up a redundant thread, but what if you have a question and want to find out if it's been answered yet? See below....

**********************

Suppose you want to find out how the nazgul were corrupted.

Go back to the search page.

Enter the search term "nazgul"

You can select all of the forums or just "Books-Tolkien"; I will only select Books-Tolkien.

Read the questions and discussions with the word "nazgul" in them and find the material to answer your question.

**********

Ok, lesson over for now, I need to clean out The White Tower....
