Hi Jeanelf...I grew up in California...after we got married my wife and I lived in the Rogers Park neighborhood in the far North West corner of Chicago from 1983-1993. For a while I sold pictures door to door in the office buildings of the Loop. My wife, an RN, worked at the Miseracordia Home which is run by the Catholic Church (Tolkien tie-in there) and takes care of seriously handicapted children.

I love the sense of community in Chicago, also the great museums: the Field Museum, Art Institute, Museum of Science and Industry, and the sports: Cubs, Bulls, Bears. Since moving back to California we somehow haven't gotten into being sports fans, it's just not the same out here as in Chicago.

The kids missed the snow when we moved. They now go skiing in the mountains here, something I never did growing up.

D-H: Well, I'll confess, I'm not very familiar with Rogers Park although I know of it. I've grown up my whole life in various parts of the South Side (although am inexplicably a Cubs fan!) and work in the Loop. I am, though, familiar with the wonderful work done by Miseracordia. Nice to have someone around who knows the area! I hope to chat with you often here and around the other forums. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Welcome to my fellow adoptees: Ithilias, Sirius, Lindar, Tar-Elestirnë, and Dad-Human! Hope you’re all enjoying TORC! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> Yes, D-H, this site sure has a lot of stuff on it. Be careful—it can be extremely addicting. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

Just a couple quick questions. (This is where I come with my stupid questions that I am too embarrassed <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-blush.gif"border=0> to ask in another thread, or I ask and nobody answers…)

What is the meaning of “1” or “11” at the end of an exclamation. For example, “wOOt wOOt!!11” I’ve seen it used in other ways, too.

Also, in the trivia threads in Books (to which I am rather addicted), people often speak as if they have the electronic text of LOTR. But I cannot get anyone to say what they are referring to. For example, on the “one word trivia” a single word is posted and we have to guess where it is from. When someone can say with certainty that this word is only used once in the entire LOTR, it seems that they must have some way of searching the text electronically, no? Any info is appreciated. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-blush.gif"border=0>

Thanks!

(And Wilko, yes I have noticed that one of my “bookworm” adopters is posting a lot in the moobies forum. I lurk there sometimes. Post rarely. I enjoy the monthly themes. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> )
I wonder if the text could be scanned page by page. I think there are some scanners that can do this, read the text not just take a picture of it. There must be some experts here.

I love the Cubs too. We went to the games sometimes...now that's a great sense of community.

By the way I was thinking about starting a thread on the movie forum asking if people thought PJ had made an effort to bring out the Catholicness in the books or even added some. But I'm not sure how that would go over there. Maybe I'd better wait awhile.

Snapdragon

What is the meaning of “1” or “11” at the end of an exclamation. For example, “wOOt wOOt!!11”

This is a silly habit people have in Movies. A bit of forum history: there didn't used to be a separate Fandom forum, and for a while there was quite a bit of tension in Movies between the "serious discussion" types and the "swooning for the actor" types. The !!!111 thing originally started when someone started a thread called something like "Frodo lvers cum ere!!!111" - the poor girl was so excited that she just took her finger off the shift key too early. Since then, if you want to "humorously" imitate a swooner, or just show that you're over-excited about something, that's the way to do it. I'm not sure where w00t w00t!!11 came from, but I think it might have been Angbasdil who repeatedly said "Helms Deep w00t w00t!!11" in every post when the first photos and clips of the Helms Deep battle scene came in.

lso, in the trivia threads in Books (to which I am rather addicted), people often speak as if they have the electronic text of LOTR.

There are e-texts of LOTR, and several other of Tolkien's works, available on the web. I did have a link to such a site, but it's not working anymore, but I'm sure there are others. However, they are illegal, and the TORC mods are quite sensitive about posting links to material that breaches the copyright of either the books or the films. Maybe you could ask someone in the trivia threads by email? I believe it isn't actually illegal to own an e-text for "back-up purposes" as long as you have the book BTW. I'll keep my eyes open for a working link.

I used to play some of the trivia games in Books. There was always a temptation to use e-texts to find the answers, but that really does defeat the purpose of playing. Don't cheat! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

Dad-human
I assume you mean symbolism and motifs, rather than Christain themes (ennoblement of the humble etc). There has been some discussion in the past on Catholic symbolism in the films, usually in passing in other threads, and mostly on the first film. Apart from a thread about a film-poster of Aragorn called oh my! It's Jesus! I don't remember any other "Christian" threads very recently.

Religion in Tolkien can be a touchy subject. I think this is actually a rare case where the most heated debates have taken place in the Books forum rather than Movies. Posts mentioning Catholic motifs in the films haven't sparked off major arguments, from what I remember. BTW, akallabeth and Elmtree are two posters I remember having something to say on this topic, and they're both around now.

Before starting a thread it's always a good idea to do a search, to make sure someone didn't start the same thread last week. And to maybe borrow ideas for your own thread <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>.

Putting "Catholic" into the search function, choosing just the Movies forum, and searching Posts (i.e. the text of all the posts, not just thread titles), we find lots of threads, but none recently on this specific topic.

In summary, I don't think this is a bad idea for a thread <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Thanks Snapdragon. I did find the "It's Jesus!" thread and made a comment on it. I'm going to take a little while to think about starting the new thread.

Dad-Human, that was wilko replying to your question, not me. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

But I do have an suggestion for you: I find it easier to respond in threads since I've changed my settings to list the most recent post last (messages in descending order), so when I am typing in the "reply" box," I can scroll down and see the last few posts. (Wilko gave me that hint when I was a very brand new newbie way back in April. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0> ) (You just click the "my settings" on the black bar.)

wilko, thanks! That info about "11" is hilarious history! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-rolleyes.gif"border=0>

Don't worry about giving me a link to the electronic text. I really don't need it. (I would never cheat!!! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-shocked.gif"border=0> <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0> ) For the one-word trivia, I just pick a word that is very unusual. And if someone finds it in another place than where I was thinking, that's fine, too!

btw, what's the "185" at the end of your name for? <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Welcome to Lindar, Tar-Elestirnë, and Dad-Human, and if i've already welcomed you, allow me to welcome you a second time<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

Dad-Human, i think the thread you wanted to post is a great idea, but let me warn you: people in the movies forum tend to laugh (putting it lightly) at threads started by newbies. But i think you'll be pretty much ok, since your question is a good one<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

Oh, and what's this "11" thing everyone's talking about? Snapdragon, the 185 was just because I tagged a number on the end as "wilko" was already taken, on the board where I first used this name. I can easily remember 185, it used to be my door number <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

PG, the 111 thing is just where people tag 1s on the end of exclamation points when they imitate netspeak (or the Movies forum version of it). See posts by people like vynaca_of_mirkwood.

teh rotk preview roxors!!!!11111

Salve...I'm a newbie to this site. Are you still taking adoptees? Anyhow, my name's Finnabhair and I'm an under 18 from southern California. I became a Tolkien addict after I read "The Hobbit" when I was 9. Since then I've read and re-read "The Lord of the Rings," and "The Silmarillion." I love fantasy books (though Tolkien is still the king of all fantasy writers!). I enjoy writing, history, and archery. What else...I play the harp, am taking Latin, and am a newbie to the local SCA group.

Ave,
Finnabhair

Finnabhair, welcome to TORC <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>. Yes, we are still taking adoptees (right guys? <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>). Although we have a big list of them, most people settle in quickly (or sometimes disappear <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif"border=0>) so we don't actually have that many people actively seeking help in this thread at an one time. BTW, if you just want to talk about whatever, most "off-topic" chat with people from this thread can go in the Lounge, a conversation thread in the Talk forum (link in my sig).

Nice range of interests you have there, Finnabhair <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>. I assume SCA = the Society for Creative Anachronisms? I've met a couple of TORCers who do historical re-enactments here in England, and they also do archery as well (their screen-names are Leoba and EdaintheRanger, and mainly post in the role-play forums, if you want to look out for them).

Hope you find lots to interest you here. Obviously there are the two Books forums; the Language forum is mainly about Quenya and Sindarin but real-world languages including latin are discussed there too. As for archery and the harp, you could do a search for existing threads, and start one on those topics if there are none already around. I had a quick look and found one thread with the word "harp" in the title, which may interest you, here (although the thread is about a year old, I'm pretty sure KBrandybuck is still posting here).

Any questions, just ask <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>.

BTW, TORC doesn't allow under-18s to post their age on the boards (see the TOS), you should probably edit out that bit of your post (press the "edit" button at the bottom-right of your post).

Welcome indeed, finnabhair. Always glad to have a new bookworm in our midst! Archery, I must confess is something I've always wanted to learn. I actually drove past an archery range this weekend, the first I've ever seen, so I have to be giving them a call! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> Please make yourself at home and let us help you with any questions you may have!

You know, I'm never sure how to begin these messages without sounding like a complete dork. Anyway, as a newbie, I guess I'm destined to be a bit clumsy for a while, so here goes...

Hi everyone! I'm new! I know nothing about this place, really, but like most of you I've been mesmerised by LOTR to such an extent that I wanted to catch up with other similarly hypnotised people. Is that OK?

Hi mytherielle and welcome to TORC (TheOneRing.Com - name for the messageboard) and a very warm welcome to the Bookworm's gateway! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

And yes, your reason is perrrrectlllly OK, it *is* the reason all of us are here. And believe me, TORC is the perfect place to be with such people. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> Hope you have a great time here.

Please ask any questions you want to here... and any one of the Bookworms will happily oblige!! And don't worry about sounding anything close to a dork. You don't sound even a bit like one!! By using long words like "mesmerised" you have put yourself waaay above the "Dork" category! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

Hi guys,

Thanks for your welcome! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>
A bit about myself? Well, I'm an Aussie chick, working in the Sydney region. I've always been a bit of a fan of the fantasy genre, and for a while wondered why the greatest review accolade was usually something like "x is the next Tolkien" or "Not since the Lord of the Rings have we seen such literary mastery!" etc etc. So I read it, and now I understand!

Anyway, it's exciting that there's a place where we can all get together and chat about our mutual obsession. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

-m
I've been having a little peek at some of the topics, and there do seem to be quite a few of us (Aussies) around! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

There's certainly a lot of variety in discussions!

Yes, definitely lots and lots of variety! Most people tend to stick to specific forums or not go to a particular one.For example, I don't venture into Movies, while that forum is probably the most frequented one! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0> And lots of Movie forum regulars don't venture into the Virtual Tolkien Study Group...

You will probably find one of us bookworms posting somewhere or the other... take support/help whenever you need it! It often just helps to see a familiar face around and send a Cheery Hi! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

Thanks for the advice! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>
I think I'll be doing a fair bit of reading/listening before I jump in to either the book or movie forums. From what I've seen, it helps to know everything backwards! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

Mytherielle, welcome! You've joined at a great time, when the ROTK chats should be taking off soon in a big way! Explore the threads and don't be afraid to jump in. Come and visit us in the Bookworms Lounge in the Bird and Baby forum as well! Glad you're here! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>
