Hello everyone! first-time poster here! you can call me Dev.
This is really a BIG forum (probably the biggest I've ever been) so the adopters policy is a great idea!
I consider myself a bookworm since I like to sink my nose on every book I find, and Tolkien is one of my best findings to date. I've read Lord of the Rings now twice and now I'm immerse in the Sil (some task) <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>
Well this one's just to say hi, I want to know if I can call myself a Bookworm.
I promise I'll write a little more about myself tomorrow (if you let me)
Good night to you all!

-dev

Welcome, Dev! You sound like a fellow bookworm to ME! You'll love the literature threads then and I'll see you there often! I read at least 2 books a week, so we'll have a lot to talk about! The Sil is a great saga; takes a bit to get into it the first time and then you'll be swept away, like the rest of us. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

So glad you've dropped in to meet us. We'll be glad to answer any questions you may have and hope to learn more about you and see you again soon. You say this is a huge site (true enough). Have you posted in many other Tolkien sites before? <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

No, actually I've been in other forums but it's my first time in a tolkien's one. I've just discovered LOTR -like many people- when the Fellowship movie was released. I've always heard about tolkien and LOTR but I believed (wrongly) that it was some tale about witches and fairies, just like, you know, all those 80s movies like neverending story, willow and stuff, that seemed very childish to me. When the movie premiered I finaly gave the books a chance and when I saw the Fellowship I was more or less on page 150 on the book. As any bookworm knows, the book ALWAYS tops the movie!
Right now I'm reading the Sil as I told you and it's great to know there are many other people who have read it too, since it's not so easy to find readers in the neighborhood with big toolkien knowledge.
Thanks for your welcome! I think it's time to start the journey!!!
<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-cool.gif"border=0>

BTW hope my english is correct... my mothertongue is spanish!

Welcome to TORC, Dev! Hail and Well Met! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>
I also belong in your category, of picking up the books before FOTR was released, though I read The Hobbit first. The Sil is a great book, quite overwhelming the first time(all those charcters, and placers and time lines, I was quite lost) but really great when you start delving into it. We have a forum in this messageboard
Virtual Tolkien Study group , where we have been discussing chapters of the Silmarillion. My appreciation of The Sil and of Tolkien has increased three-fold ever since! Drop in there sometime, if you wish.

See you around the Boards. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

And your english is perfect. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Hola, Dev, welcome to our thread <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

As Mahima says, the VTSG has some great stuff on the Silmarillion, though it might be better to form your own impressions on each section first (and there are obviously story spoilers in there). I will plug The Silmarillion - How should it be approached? though <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

BTW, jeanelf, is that really you in your sig picture? (on the left - I know who the one on the right is <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>). Lovely photo <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Dev, your English is terrific! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> I took three years of Spanish in high school and could never speak 1/5 as well in your language, although I've never had much of a chance to use it practically. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif"border=0> I often think of taking a refresher course; one of my future goals!

Wilko, yes, it's actually me. After three hours of waiting in line to see Sean, it's a wonder I was still smiling -- I think I was pretty slap-happy by then -- it was a crazy experience! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> (But he was EXTREMELY nice to all and I understand even came back the next day, which wasn't scheduled, because so many people were there on the day I was and couldn't get to see him)....

Wilko: very interesting your link to your approach on the Silm. It's as big as the book itself. I hope I'll be able to participate more as I go further.
The VTSG looks interesting as well but I heard that the posters are a bit advanced, so us newbies might get a bit scared <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif"border=0> , I think I have to wander here and there a little...
Mahima: nice to meet you too, you are all so friendly!!!
Jeanelf: we can trade knowledge... you teach me about Tolkien and other authors, I can teach you some more spanish (it's not as hard as it seems)... I learned it when I was just a baby! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>
Hasta la vista amigos!
(see you soon, my friends!)

Dev, I only meant to suggest you read the first post of that thread (though I think there's some interesting stuff in the rest of it too). And don't worry, I'm intimidated by the VTSG sometimes too <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>. It's worth reading though, even if you don't end up posting.
Hello, hello, hello! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

It's been a long time....no excuses, just overwhelmed with too many interests and not enough time to indulge them all. However, I intend to turn over a new leaf and be more conscientious.

Welcome Dev, welcome mytherielle! I'm not officially an adopter any more but I was here at the start and still feel at home in our Garden.

Dev, the VTSG is far less intimidating than it seems on first glance. The idea is not to just dip your toes in the water, but to dive right in! May as well get the shock over with and then you can enjoy the warmth of the water! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> No, seriously, there is a huge mix of people and experience in the VTSG. I think the impression of a rarified environment is unjustified.

And like Jeanelf, I love the Spanish language! Probably the most liquid and emotional language on the planet, in my view.

mytherielle, nice to see a fellow Aussie. I'm from Melbourne...but intending to get to Sydney in January for an Aussie moot You may want to consider it...check the thread <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

Shmooches wilko before leaving....just because I can <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0> It's been a while since we caught up. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> You are sounding well.

Thanks for the advice! The VTSG is so full of info that you could read it for hours and just scratch the surface. I'd rather stand firmly before start posting as my tolkien knowledge is in process (I'm still in the middle of the Sil)
Spanish is really smooth for poetry but sometimes we tend to use too many words... english is more practical Oh! and have you ever read any of the LOTR poetry in spanish? it's a pity, translation doesn't rhyme at all! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-mad.gif"border=0>
Hi, I am from Buenos Aires, Argentina and I would like to be adopted by you. I read Tolkien books about 7 years ago and since them I have not left the Middle Earth. I never joined any group, I always kept this sacred treasure to myself. I started looking for information when the movies appeared to learn about the opinions of other fellow Tolkien readers and here I am, ready to learn and share and enjoy. I like reading very much, Literature from every part of the world. I also love travelling around the world when ever I get the chance to do so.

(where is everyone? Since I said I won't be posting much for a while I seem to be posting more than ever <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>)

Hi mar, welcome to TORC (=theonering.com, the old name of this site). And welcome to our "adoption" thread <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>.

You sound similar to me, for years I didn't talk about with people about my secret world of Middle-earth, then I heard about the films and decided to find out about them. And then I noticed that this site has a books forum... and the rest is history. I hope you have as enjoyable time here as I've had so far.

There is at least one Spanish-speaking thread on TORC, which you may be interested in. Or maybe not - I think a lot of posters there are Anglophones from the US, trying to improve their Spanish skills, while you might want to do the opposite? Anyway, to find a thread like that on a particular subject, put eg Spanish into the Search function in the black bar at the top of the page.

Any questions, about anything at all on TORC, just ask <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Hola Mar! I speak spanish too! I'm from Lima, Perú. There's a spanish TORC speaking thread on the link below:
http://www.tolkienonline.com/thewhitecouncil/messageview.cfm?catid=37&threadid=65544#1
I'm new here so I'm not an official adopter (hope no one will get mad at me <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-blush.gif"border=0>) but every one here had been sooo nice that, as the movie, I feel I must "pay it forward".
Espero verte pronto por allí!

Mahima: thanks for your support... the VTSG is SO interesting and is SO MUCH written that I will read a lot before posting. I think I'll end reading the Sil before!
hi, figure i should start watching this thread again, since i'm a part of it. wilko, do you mind changing my biography? you can leave the enigmatic part if you like, but you can remove my messenger information, because i don't use any of them anymore. and then here's a new biography:

A son of Los Angeles County, Armenelos was born in the small suberb of Santa Monica. Living in the desert north of LA for most of his life, he fell in love with many kinds of literature, including the subjects of Middle-earth, the Beat Generation, and Objectivism. He befriended and became one of the artists in the area who thrifted toys and made music from them, and even directed a short film. He made a living maintencing computers at the only Youth Library in California, while acting as a Stage hand at a Performing Arts theater, and eventually a Master Electrician/Lighting Designer, where he worked with the likes of Ben E. King, Earth Wind & Fire, The Turtles and many other greats. He is now awaiting the call of his musical hero, Trey Spruance, to light an islamic, electronic, surf rock, musical tour, while selling baseball cards and designing web pages in Galax, Virginia, the World's Capital of Olde Time Mountain Music, with his significant other and her family, entering into his twenty-first year in less than thirty days from now. -Matthew Rooney; Sep 22 2003

Welcome to the Bookworm's Garden mar! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Have you and Dev read the book "The Celestine Prophecy". It is set in Peru and based on the Inca's civilisation on how they transcended several levels of energy. Very fascinating. Some of it struck a chord (me being from India, where there are a lot of energy fundamentals too), while some I could not swallow at all. But I feel it is a must read.

Dev, if you have read the book, maybe you could let us know how much of it rings true with you?
And I hope to see you around the VTSG! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

Mahima, thank you very much for the welcome. I will look for the book you tell me about. It will be good for me to receive some new energy. I really haven´t read much about the Incas but I know many people that travelled to Machu Pichu and they come back talking about how special that place is.
India must be fascinating also. when you go to post a reply, there is a link below the 'Done!' and 'Cancel' buttons, which reads 'symbols'. click there for all of the tag descriptions.

to make a link, do this without the spaces:

[ u r l = http://www.link.com ] Link Name [ / u r l ]

as you can see above, just typing in the link address will make it into a link, but sometimes errors will occur, and your link won't show up right, so i reccomend using the tags. also, make sure that you do not put quotes around the address like in html. here is the finished result without the spaces:

Link Name

just make sure you are in accordance with the Terms of Service (i.e. don't link to any web site that contains innapropriate material).

i'm feeling good today, how are you?
