Hello and welcome to TORC! As you can see, this is a very large site, and can be somewhat intimidating for the newer posters. That's where we come in. We're here to answer any of your questions and give you our advice.

Okay now for the not so boring stuff. Let us introduce ourselves:

Hey, I’m Satch, and I live in England. Yes I'm scary. I’ve read the Hobbit, FotR and TTT, but I’m waiting to see RotK before I finish the trilogy, but I’ve ‘read’ the Silmarilion, so I’m not entirely clueless, like Elwen would like you to believe.

And I’m Elwen, Satch’s American partner in crime. I’ve read LotR and the Hobbit 3 or so times, and about half of the Unfinished Tales and the Sil. I have a good memory for useless things, so if you want to know any random facts I’m the one to ask. Satch’s memory isn’t so good, I shudder when I think of what it’ll be like when she’s old and grey.

Elwen’s main forums: Movies (LotR), The Bird and the Baby (talk)
Satch’s main forums: Movies (LotR), The Bird and the Baby (talk), Languages.

Forums that we lurk/sometimes post in: Philosophy, Books (Tolkien), Books (Other), Events, A Tolkien Virgin, Movies (Fandom), Movies (Other), Tom’s House, Languages, Alliances and Guilds, Writing, and of course The One Ring and Premiere Membership Support.

Italic forums Elwen lurks in, Bold are forums we both lurk in, and normal is Satch.

And if you need to get in contact with us:

E-mail/MSN: Schpeckle@hotmail.com and Elwenoni@hotmail.com
AIM: Satchmoochen and Elwenoni

If you can’t figure out who is who then tough luck! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif"border=0>

---

I'll continue to edit this as our little family grows, if I can be bothered to sign out and into this account:

Our Adoptees
The_Rogue
motorwife
Sock_Wearing_Troll
Endoras_the_WoodElf
Moriquendi13
TheFlamingMullet
Wynken21
Eliad_Drilken
elrin

Our friends*
Mighty_Squid
GandalfStormcrow
Ranewen_the_pink
$mAug_dRagYn
Rodia

*AKA people we pretend to like so we can get more posts in our thread. *thumbs up*

Okay it’s time for the long post. We have basic rules and things you need to know here, but if you don’t bother reading it we understand. I suggest reading the first section though (we kindly separated it by lines for you because it was so long).

You will soon realize that TORC isn’t as perfect as it looks. The site works hard to keep TORC a good and clean place, and that requires the help of each and every poster. Working behind the scenes are the two admin, Ted and Jon. We also have moderators, and you can find a list and their emails here. Their job is to patrol the boards and make sure everybody is following the Terms of Service, or TOS. There is always a link on the upper right hand corner of every page on TORC. This TOS is not like one that you would find when signing up for an online game site or an email address, this one is short and to the point, and it is HIGHLY recommended that you read it, in fact SO highly recommended that we are going to summarize it here for you. Think of them as the rules of the boards:

No spamming. Spamming is when you post pointless things that waste time and space. Starting a thread saying ‘I’m bored’ is a good example, or *bump*ing a thread. Spamming is also advertising for other websites. You can post a link to a website that you like, but we don’t want to see obvious advertisement. Another form of spam is replying to your own post, which is generally frowned upon here. If you make a mistake in a post or you want to add something you can just push the ‘edit’ button at the bottom of your post and change it.

No Flaming (or trolling, which is only added because Satch is a *$^@&#). That would be personal attacks. It’s good to get in debates with people, but you should be debating the topic, not calling the person a two headed ugly Satch or something.

No profanity or sexual innuendo. This is a family friendly site, so theoretically people of all ages should be able to enjoy posting here. Profanity is the easiest way to get yourself in a lot of trouble with the admin and mods. Blocking out words with *’s are also not allowed. The general rule for profanity is if you can recognize what the word is, it shouldn’t be there. The easiest way to be safe is just not to swear. Sexual innuendo you will see used sometimes, and that isn’t allowed either, mostly for the younger posters on our board, even though we know that’s almost all that high school students talk about.

No Netspeak. we dun wanna c postz lik diz because itz rlly hard 2 read nad sum people wud say itz an insult 2 tolkien and itz rlly annoyin and specially hard 2 read 4 people hoo dun speak english az a 1st language. (By the way you may see some people posting with a bit of netspeak (mostly just a !!111 at the end of a sentence though), generally in movies and by older posters. It’s used as a joke, and can be quite funny).

If you’re under 18, for your own safety you are not supposed to supply your town name, age, or name.

If you use any of these things above you can (and probably) will be sent an email by a moderator, which we call a warning, and your post will be edited. Take the warnings seriously, because it doesn’t take a lot of them to be banned, and we don’t want you guys to be kicked off the site. Obviously I haven’t covered everything in the TOS, yet my summary is probably still longer.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Before you start posting, I’d recommend just lurking through some forums for a start to see what they’re like and where you’d like to post. If you want to take a look at the forums we have, click here.

Movies-Fandom and Tom’s House are more light hearted forums with word games and what we call sw00ning (which would be something like “Oh Elwen I love you! *sw000000000n*” )

Alliances and Guilds is home to various “clubs” which are based around or dedicated to Tolkien. Take a look at the thread on the top of the main page to see if there are any guilds you may like to join.

The Role Playing forums, The Pony(Tolkien’s Middle Earth) and The Green Dragon Inn (Tolkien influenced) are generally pretty serious places and do not take kindly to spam or needless posts if you’re not part of the RP, so check out the welcome threads in there if you’d like to join one of them. The Welcome forum has The Lucky Fortune Inn which is where anyone can go and role play if they don’t feel confident joining a serious RP yet.

Books Tolkien and Books Other are for discussions of books, surprise surprise.

Languages is where you can go if you want to learn one of Tolkien’s languages or just ask something about a language. Please PLEASE do not start any irrelevant threads in there because I will take it to heart. …I’m not kidding though.

And last but not least of this brief *ahem* summary of the forums on TORC, is Movies - LotR which is a delightfully sarcastic forum dedicated to the discussion of the Movies (technically) but if you go in there posting away without seriously taking a look around, they will eat you. You have been warned. My advice is to lurk in there for at LEAST a week before actually posting, but 2-3 weeks is advisable.

Anyways, the rest of the forums kinda summarise themselves, so have a great time looking around. If you want to post something look to see if there’s a thread which you could post in which is relevant, if you can see anything then use the search function to make sure you’re not about to post a duplicate or already well talked about thread.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you want to know who the moderators of the board are, click here.

Some things people often want to know when they first join TORC (that stands for theonering.com which is the old link to the site, although it still works) is how to do smileys:

: O = <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-blush.gif"border=0>
: | = <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-mad.gif"border=0>
: D = <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>
: ) = <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>
: ( = <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif"border=0>
: Q = <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-shocked.gif"border=0>
; ) = <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>
: P = <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif"border=0>
= : ) = <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-devil.gif"border=0>
:‘ ( = <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-crying.gif"border=0>
% ( = <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-confused.gif"border=0>
8 - ) = <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-cool.gif"border=0>
B ^ or B - ) = <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-rolleyes.gif"border=0>

People also ask what the titles under your user name are, and they are as follows:

Petitioner to the Council – 0 posts
Citizen of Imladris - 20 posts
Shield Bearer – 100 posts
Rider of the Mark - 500 posts
Ranger of the North - 1,000 posts
Mariner - 5,000 posts
Ringbearer - 10,000 posts
(custom titles can be made if you buy Premiere Memebership)

Aaaaaanyways, after this insanely long ramble about various parts of TORC I’d like to first thank Blackwood for the couple of things I *cough* borrowed from one of his lengthy threads, and erm… welcome to TORC.

Stormy, you never were the youngest adopter. *cough*E*cough*

Yes, now we just have to wait for our little play things...er...newbies, to come get our help!

And the first post wasn't very long, we felt (well, I felt <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif"border=0>), that instead of swamping them with information other than things about us (because we're so interesting) that we would put it in a seperate post, just to make things easier. We're good adopters, are we not?

Wow, their letting ANYONE become an adopter nowadays, standards around here are slipping, its scandalous! I suppose your gonna be made Mods next and isn’t that a scary thought.<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-shocked.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif"border=0>

Good luck (your poor n00bs are certainly gonna need plenty with adopters like you<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>).

At least they will if you ever get any, I think the smell of Satch’s cooking is putting them off….

#Escapes before anyone throws any tins of spam#

Attention: to all poor newbies who have stumbled into "Elwen and Satch's gingerbread house of n00bly love" (I put the title in because I have a feeling it may change, and I just adore it): these two are two of the nicest people here on TORC that I know. Yes, they're both a little bit goofy-(heck, more than a little), and yes, they both have driven me crazy over the past few years. But if anyone were to ask me who should take a newbie that's interested in the Movies forum around, and is patient, as well as being a bit silly when it's required, I'd have to say, "satch and Elwen."

Does this mean I'm adopted? Let's see, I've already been adopted by Lidless. That didn't work out too well. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

*wipes tear* Thank you, that was so touching! Now start promoting us because Stormy has 3 more adoptees than we do! But yes I have to say that if you need help in movies I'm the one to ask because I was nailed when I first got here by very very mean people *cough*Duffster*cough*, and I went to help people avoid that because it isn't very fun...

Oh yeah, and I bet we could keep you out of jail Duffster <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

Now where are our adoptees? <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

EDIT: I love your sig <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

I've been looking around the forum for a few days since I arrived, and after a lot of reading the threads and thinking, I made the choice (and it was a very hard one) to ask if I may make my start at TORC here.

Ok then ! *takes deep nervous breath*

Where do I start? I'm a long time lurker. I discovered this board years ago, when I first heard that a live action version of my favorite book of all time was being filmed. I've been here quietly lurking for over two years now-mainly in the movies forum.

I've been a Tolkien fanatic since the 1970's when I was a young teenager. My first reading of The Lord of the Rings all those years ago absolutely blew me away and I've read it countless times since then. I've now converted my husband and children and even some neices and newphews into Tolkien geeks like me. *grins proudly*

I love Peter Jackson's movies. Though they are far from perfect and I personally would have done some things differently, I have made peace with that and can enjoy them for what they represent to me: the embodiment of Middle Earth in all it's beauty, glory, and depth. Some of the changes and cuts have hurt deeply, but I would rather endure that then have these movies not exist at all.

I think what made me finally come out of lurkdom was my excitement over Return of the King. December 17th will be a bittersweet day for me. The thrill of finally seeing ROTK will be tempered by the fact that this long journey will now be complete. I want to commiserate with other people who can understand what it's like to have one of the most exciting and anticipated events of their lives finally be over. *music swells dramatically in the background*

So anyway...hello everyone ! Anything else you want to know about me? I live in Southern California. Husband, two kids and a dog. I used to have an exciting career but gave it all up a few years ago to be a stay-at-home mom.

&%$*%! I cleverly just closed the window when I tried minimizing it. Smaaaaart.

So I'll summarize my last (rather long) post, seeing as I don't have time to re-write it. I shouldn't be online at all right now. Whoops!

Anyways, to start out, I know what you mean about RotK. I'm so excited about it, yet terrified at the same time. It's the end. It's just something I haven't quite come to terms with yet. It's seemed like so long since I saw FotR, yet at the same time it could have been last month. PJ made a mistake in making 3 movies, he should really have done 6, one for each book <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

Hm...I also said that my father had been pestering me to read The Hobbit for years, and I finally picked it up on an 8 hour flight from Australia to Hong Kong. Loved it. Read the first part of FotR, saw the movie, and finished the trilogy and read it again by August.

I see the movies and the books as two totally different medias. I rarely compare them, because I don't think they can be compared anyway but plot wise, and I'm sorry but a lot of things just wouldn't have worked on the screen. I see the movies as movies and books as books, and I try not to think about the differences, because that would only make me mad about them and I don't want to ruin the movies for myself.

If I wrote anything else I don't remember, and I've spent half an hour longer on the computer than I should have. Oh yeah! 2 years of lurking? <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-shocked.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-shocked.gif"border=0> I got the link from a friend and joined right away. Apparently at that time I wasn't all that clever and got nailed for a few of my posts in movies, ironically by one of the people in this thread <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0> I guess you know a lot about how the forums work, or at least movies (the hardest one to understand and fit into <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif"border=0>).

Right. Time to go.

I hate computers!

Elwen
Yeah...two years of lurking. Kind of embarrassing I guess. I orginally was going to sign up right away but saw how newbies just got shredded. I decided to lurk for a little while and a little while turned into years. Yes, I do pretty much know my way around. I witnessed the flame wars, the purist/revisionist debates and I've been delightedly following the romance of Iavas and Eruname. I'm an oldtimer as far as my knowledge of the board but a complete newbie when it comes to speaking up and offering my opinions. I'm still too chicken to actually POST in movies, though! *shudders*

Ever since I was...er...scared...out of movies, I've been afraid to post there too. At least seriously that is. Then again there's the fact that I'm not so good at arguing unless it's a formal debate, and even then I'm not so good...

Lurking isn't bad at all, and definitely encouraged here. Some people won't believe that somebody could lurk for two years and not post, but that's probably just because they talk a lot <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif"border=0> I wish that I had lurked when I first joined, but then there's the fact that I do talk a lot and that I wasn't all that clever when I joined. I've been posting about half as much as I did about a year ago, so maybe I'm starting to run out of things to say <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif"border=0>

The key to movies is getting on peoples good side when you first post. Let them know that you know what you're talking about and can carry out a civilized conversation/debate, but also that you're not always completely serious. Look at Lidless for example. The majority of his posts are just jokes, but you occasionally run into serious posts of his. Another good way to get good attention when you first join is to tell people that you were banned from TORN <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

Hey great idea ! Maybe I'll jump on over to TORN and try and get myself banned real quick. Then come back to movies and brag about it ! Seriously, though, I doubt I'll have the nerve to post in movies for quite a while. Even though I feel like I know everybody over there, nobody in movies knows ME and that's a huge hurdle to get over. I need many more posts under my belt before anyone in movies will even pay attention to anything I say.
