I took a little break, but I'm around now. TORC does seem rather quiet these days though.

Hey, you're a Mariner PG <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>. Hello, I'm Hikaru, a book-loving Newbie looking for a home.
Would you mind adopting me?

I think I'll fit in here...I do love the films but I have loved the books since I first read the trilogy in the late '70's, and just finished re-reading it for the sixth or seventh time. I see the movies as a separate entity from the books and enjoy them on their own merit.
And yes, I do think Orlando is hot. Nevermind. I've been reading Tolkien since he was still in diapers.

I'm from Connecticut but I live in Tokyo, Japan in a two-room apartment with my husband , two kids, and somewhere around two thousand books. I'll read anything as long as it's good, but fantasy will always be my favorite genre and Tolkien, of course, is the best of the best.

Oh yes, and I used to play D and D back in the 80's when you had to actually get together with real live humans to play it! I confess I've never played an online RPG but I noticed some of you do...maybe you could persuade me to give it a try.
I used to adore Elfquest too...how 80's is that?
anyone remember Elfquest? It's being reissued!!
I look forward to getting to know you and I will be grateful for your assistance in navigating this huge site.

hello and Welcome to the gateway, Hikaru!!<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> nice to have a japanese on board...i've noticed there's a sad lack of people from China or Japan on TORC (short for theonering.com...it's what this site used to be called<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>) Anyway, if you have any questions, feel free to ask<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> i'd write more, but i'm in a bit of a rush now<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

Wilko, thanks<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Hello Hikaru, welcome to TORC and to the bookworms! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

I'm a bookworm, that is, a regular of the bookworms chat-thread, so I feel a part of the adoptions, too, and read the thread occasionally, although I'm not supposed to post here ( <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-blush.gif"border=0> ), as I'm not an official adopter.
But it's been a bit quiet here, so I thought I'd make an exception. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

As PG said, if you have any questions, never hesitate to ask! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

I don't normally read fantasy literature (Tolkien is so much better than "normal" fantasy lit in my opinion <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>), and don't play D&D or anything of the sort, but I totally agree with what you said about the books and films! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

So, where do you intend to hang out on TORC? What are you most interested in?
Do drop by in the Lounge for bookworms, which I linked to above! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> (It's a long thread, but don't let that intimidate you. Just read the opening posts and the last two or three pages, that should be enough to give you an idea of what the place is like! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> )

I'm curious to hear what has brought you to Tokyo? How do you like it there? It's a lot different from Connecticut I can imagine! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0> <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Hey all just saying hello and thought I should show off my new shield! Yes amazing I've made 100 posts. I know this isn't really much of a mile stone (considering people like tolkienpurist who has been on the boards as long as me and has reached 1000!) but I've got three kids, a job and a masters to contend with, so I'm pretty chuffed.

Cel

ps. Hi *~Linsul~*~Songbreeze~* bit of a mouthful the name, what do you like to be called? I can vouch for this adoption thread, they are great!

Hello and welcome, *~Linsul~*~Songbreeze~* ! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>
It looks very pretty, the way your name is spelled, but it’s good to have a shorter form, too – thanks! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

There’s nothing you have to do to be adopted. Just say you want to be, and that’s it. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

I can see you’ve been around on TORC quite a bit already, but if you have any questions, that’s what we’re here for.
Being adopted is also a nice way to meet fellow TORCers in a relaxed way.
For a first introduction to TORC you could read the first posts in this thread.

So, I guess you’re a bit of a bookworm yourself, as you’ve chosen us for your adopters? What do you like to read? If you let us know a bit about yourself, we can get to know you better.

As to how to make a thread, click on new topic in the menu bar at the top of the list of threads in each forum. Enter a name for your thread that will tell people what you want to talk about (ie, not something like “question” or “news” or so).

You should also make sure that you post your thread in the right forum and make a search to see if there has been a thread on the same topic before. (To do this, click on “search” enter a search term and check out the results.)
If there has been a thread on your topic before, post in there, even if the last post has been a while ago. If you start a new thread when an old one already exists, it is likely that yours will be locked. This is because new threads mean bandwidth, and bandwith is a cost-factor. So being careful about not wasting bandwidth is helping TORC to keep the costs managable. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Oh, and when you have posted and then think of something to add to your post, instead of making a new post you can use the edit function at the bottom of your post.

celebalqua, congrats on 100 posts! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> You look good with the shield! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>
I think 100 posts in three months is perfectly normal. I only reached 1000 after 16 months – I started slowly and only got a bit more confident in posting all over the place after having been here a while. I'm spending more time here now than at first (yes, it’s addictive <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif"border=0>), but then I don't have any kids to keep me away from the PC. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>
A welcome to the newbies (or a welcome back, celebalqua <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>)

Hikaru, I'm afraid I can't help you on online RPGs (I also last played that sort of thing in real life a few years back). On TORC there is no G, it's just RP. Which means, it's more like collaborative storytelling rather than a game with an object in mind.

Linsul, hi <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>. I think truehobbit's covered it, but any more questions, please ask.

So, do you want to tell us a bit about yourself? <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Hello and welcome, *~Linsul~*~Songbreeze~*. Long name, that...but it sounds lovely. I think i'll call you Linsu<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> Truehobbit (Aka Hobby<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>) gave a pretty good description of what being adopted is all about...like she and Wilko said, if you have any questions, just ask<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

So where are you from? i've heard a lot about Redwall...never tried it myself though. It sounds interesting<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

celeb, congrats on the 100 posts<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

Hello all! I'm new here and a bookworm myself, so I figured I would post here. I don't have any questions now, but knowing me, I'll probably have several-- just give me a couple of weeks.

Just to introduce myself quickly: I'm a Junior at a high school in Ohio, USA. I'm the oldest of 2 girls, I have a dog and a cat. I'm a fairly new Tolkien fan (what are we CALLED anyway. You know, there's Trekies and Potterites (I'm one of them too), but what are LOTR fans? Ringies?) as of, I don't know, I think two years ago when my friend dragged me to see Fellowship in theaters. I finally finished reading the books a couple weeks ago (not The Hobbit, though...). Oh, yeah, and I'm a major Bandie...

So...this is where I can post to be adopted, I'm assuming? May I be adopted by your group? *puppy eyes*

((fixed!))

Hello and welcome, Alatariel_Taralom! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Yes, you are now officially adopted by the bookworms! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>
Any questions or difficulties you may find, don’t hesitate to ask here!

Thanks for telling us a bit about yourself – though you are actually not supposed to post your age on the board when you’re under-age!

I’m a Potterite, too – there’s a big thread in Books (Other Authors) that discusses all things HP (Harry Potter).
Tolkien-fans? Good question! Tolkienites maybe? Sounds like a big and clever word – very appropriate, I think! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0> <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

But what is a “major Bandie”?

I’m posting from Germany, and we have people from all around the world among the bookworms! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

So, make yourself comfortable, have a cup of your favourite drink, and start browsing TORC!
It’s a big place with a lot of interesting things to read and discuss. It’s always good to read a lot before posting – but that’s something a bookworm shouldn’t have a problem with. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Oops (about the age thing)!

Tolkienites sounds good...that actually works! *runs off to tell her friends*

A "major Bandie" is...do you know what a Band Geek is? Band Nerd, Band Geek, Bando, Bandie...they all mean the same thing. I'm obsessed with my HS marching band and I'm in the second highest concert band, but I'll be in the highest next year!

An adoption thread for bookworms sounds like the perfect place to be. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> I've been "lurking" around TORC for a couple of months, now, and rarely have the urge to post since I've found that so many of my Tolkien-related questions have already been answered on this board. Hanging around this board has actually sparked a new interest in Tolkien's works for me, and I've discovered (and rediscovered) a few treasures as a result.

About me: I'm an expat Brit living in the States. I read The Hobbit when I was 8 or 9...the rest, as they say, is history...

Oh, and Happy Birthday TORC!

May I be adopted now? <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

Hello and welcome to TORC and to the bookworms, The_Sea_Bell! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>
That’s a really pretty name you have there! Do you sometimes feel Sea-longing then? <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

I also lurked a few months before I joined – it had been my first time on a messageboard, and I didn’t really trust these online things, but this place just looked too good not to join. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

It’s a very good thing to lurk, or rather read, more than you post, and you are right, answers to questions can often be found without posting. But nevertheless you are very welcome to contribute to any threads, no matter how old or new they are! If you have an additional thought to something that is being discussed, just join in!
Or if for the moment you can’t think of anything to add to the serious discussion, you might have fun just talking about all sorts of things in the Talk forum for example.

I see you’ve already found out how to edit a post – good work! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>
Any other questions or difficulties, don’t hesitate to ask! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

It’s great that you are finding new things and re-discovering old ones through TORC! I’m looking forward to seeing the results of that in your posts, and am curious in which forums you’ll find yourself most at home. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Speaking of the Talk forum: The bookworms have a gathering place there, too. It may seem a bit daunting at first, because it’s a long thread and people have been posting there for ages, but it’s nice and chummy – we mostly talk daily chat, food, have pillow fights - and very occasionally mention books as well.

This invitation, of course, goes for all our adoptees here! You can read more about it, and find a link, in the first post of this thread. There are also tips and links to all sorts of other helpful stuff in the introductory posts of this thread.

Alatariel, I see! A marching Band! We don’t get them here so often, that’s why I didn’t make the connection at once! And what exactly is your role in the Band?

Thanks for editing your age out of your post, btw! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> And good that you too already know how to edit!
(Hehe, bookworms get clever adoptees, don't you think? <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> )
truehobbit: Thank you for the welcome! I think I will feel quite at home here. I'm sure it's no accident that Bookworms attracts clever posters.<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-devil.gif"border=0> Seriously, though, I've read threads on this board that leave me feeling quite in awe of the level of expertise and intelligence displayed, which is why I wanted to be part of this community--I generally don't join message boards, either.

Sea longing...I could write paragraphs.<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> But I've just finished reading the excellent thread on that subject that wilko bookmarked on the front page of this thread and have little to add...yet. I love browsing the Best Books list, as well. Wonderful insights to be found there. As for my username, it's taken from Tolkien's poem of that title (I expect you knew that already). But, although the Sea comes into it, it seems to me that it's more about the longing to touch, but not ever really grasp, that ever elusive sense of Otherness, which is what pulls me back to Tolkien's work all the time. I've never found that quality to that extent in any other modern author, and that makes me sad.

Enough rambling. What they call "real life" is calling loudly for my attention.<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

So good to find a site with other Tolkienites (love that word).

I do have one question. If you want to quote another post in your answer, do you have to keep pressing the "back" button and copy/paste? Is there a way to see the post you're answering and your reply box at the same time? Thanks!<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Truehobbit: I LOVE band! Band is my life (along with LOTR, of course...but band takes up more of my time)! Right now all I'm going to be next season is a Senior Fourth Year Clarinet Marcher-- pretty high rank, compared to the lower ones. Hopefully, however, I'll either be a Senior Fourth Year Clarinet Section Leader or (I really hope) a Senior Field Commander.

The Bookworms get the smart adoptees because 1. We're cool. And 2. Bookworms are smart. After all, we're the ones who came up with Tolkienites! Hehe!

Sea Bell (is that ok for short? Or just Bell?), you already read the „Sea-Longing“ thread? I’m very impressed! I had thought of linking to it, with my above comment on your name, but thought that would go too far. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

I quite agree with what you said about that particular quality of Tolkien and his uniqueness among modern authors. Is there an older author, then, you would compare him to?
As to the poem you take your name from, I think in addition to the longing for the ever elusive other world, there’s also the element of the speaker ruining what little welcome he had there by being too proud and possessive, and declaring himself king.

But now to your question:
If you want to quote another post in your answer, do you have to keep pressing the "back" button and copy/paste? Is there a way to see the post you're answering and your reply box at the same time?

I’m afraid there isn’t, not to my knowledge anyway. When the reply box is open you can only see the content of the first page of the thread. How many posts that contains, and whether they are the oldest or newest posts depends on your settings, but as soon as you hit „back“ or go to another page, whatever you have typed in the reply box so far is lost.

What I usually do, especially if I need to refer to more than one post in a reply, is to type my answer in Word. That way I can switch between the windows of the thread and my reply quite easily, and, what’s more, I avoid having the results of some hard work eaten and lost.
Because it happens fairly frequently that when you press „done“, you get an error message and your reply goes to the web’s nirvana of lost posts.
After typing in Word, I copy and paste into the reply window. And if I do some final formatting or editing of what I’ve written in the reply box before posting, I copy the contents of the reply box, just to have them in temporary storage in case the post is lost.

However, you may have seen that in a few weeks there’ll be a shiny new software for the messageboard! Who knows, maybe it’ll have such a possibility as you say, it certainly would be a good idea!

Alatariel
Band is my life (along with LOTR, of course...but band takes up more of my time)!
Hmmmh – that’s going to change, I think... <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-devil.gif"border=0> <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif"border=0> <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

Just kidding, your career in your band sounds great, so I doubt TORC could compete with that. Do you play the clarinet only in the band, then? Or do you practice playing for other purposes, too?
You could check out if there are more people interested in marching bands in Talk (do a search before starting a thread, though, please <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> ), or have a look in the music forum for other clarinet-players.

But TORC can be wonderfully addictive! People find themselves spending much more time here than they had expected at first. Er – well, yes, like me, actually. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-blush.gif"border=0> <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>
Just thought I’d tell you, so: you‘ve been warned! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif"border=0> <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>
Truehobbit: Thank you for the MS Word suggestion. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> This is going to make things a lot easier.

“The Sea Bell” is not a very comfortable poem (understatement), and, thinking about what you said, maybe it suggests how easy it is to lose something precious by being possessive. It reminds me of the tale of “Smith of Wootton Major,” where Smith has to give away his “free pass” to Faerie in the end.

About “modern” authors: just my own limited experience, really. Even Narnia is not as evocative as Tolkien, I think. But no, I couldn't suggest any older authors, but that could be because I just haven't read enough.<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

Anyway, thank you for making me feel very welcomed here at TORC.

Hi, striderchick! Nice to meet you.

Alatariel_Taralom : Hi, and I hope you really enjoy your experience here. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Yep, Tolkienonline is really addictive. All those juicy threads to wander through. I didn't even know there was a raging controversy about Balrogs' wings before I stumbled in here.<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-devil.gif"border=0>

Bell<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Truehobbit: Well, I initially began playing clarinet (almost 5 years ago) because of band, and I've kept it up. I don't have time to take private lessons, unfortunately, and I'm not so good that I get gigs in downtown or anything. I play in the marching band and then I play in the second-highest concert band (but I'll be in the highest next year); in my church's Youth Musical about five of us Bandies/pre-Bandies are playing a feature in one of the songs.

I don't doubt that I'll be on here a lot. I've already become quite addicted to it. This is an interesting and amusing site. I would get on during school but my AP Lang class hasn't gone to the computer lab in weeks, we haven't had AAP in weeks (that's NOT a bad thing, trust me), and I can't spend my Option time in the computer lab because the computer lab teacher is incredibly watchful that we're doing homework and the librarians actually have gotten more watchful...so, I'm stuck with after school...

Bell:hello to you too, and let me welcome you to bookworms.

Alatariel_Taralom hello, and welocome to bookworms. i'm a flutist myself.. even though i'm not sure if that is the correct word.. well, this is my 5th year of learning flute.

i believe it was truehobbit who suggested using Word to write messages, and i have to say, i have often thought of doing that myself.. but, unfortunatley, word doesn't work to well whilest i am conected to the net. so i just have to make do and hold to hope.

best wishes to all for this holiday

striderchick

Hi,
I'm a newbie (though i doubt i needed to point that out) and although i am interested in this 'group' i dont quite want to put myself up for adoption yet, mainly 'cause i dont know what I'm getting myself into <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>
I mainly signed up here because i am looking for a LotR club type thingy in my area.

-Baron

PS Ignore the self proclimation in my name by choosing to call myself 'Baron'. I chose the name along time ago and it just stuck.

well, things have moved fast here, haven't they. So sorry i haven't dropped by earlier.....just a nudge for Wilko, updating the first post might be a good idea.<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Alatariel_Taralom, hello and welcome, darling<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> Truhobbit has already told you the basics- any questions, any help required, just hollar<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0> and i know what you mean about getting addicted to TORC....it's inevitable once you join.

The_Sea_Bell, nice to meet you<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> That's an interesting name...i rather like it, and the explenation you gave about it is fascinating. oh, and that thing about Balrog Wings...LOL...don't get any of the oldies started on that, unless you want your ear chewed off<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

BaronAlstine, welcome! it's ok if you don't want to get adopted, but it's really not "getting yourself into" anything. Online Adoption, basically, is when a person or group of people take you under their "wing", treat you like family, help you out in getting the basics and keeping you out of trouble<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0> TORC (tolkienonline) is not really a club- it's a whole other world, a whole community on it's own, and is much bigger than any club you'll find, since we have members from all over the world. for eg, i'm from Australia, and Truehobbit's from Germany. You'll get used to it<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

Oh, and i won't comment on the Baron title......you are allowed to name yourself whatever you want here<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

If you have any questions, just ask...don't hesitate.

And last, but certainly not least, i'd like to thank you, Hobby, for taking charge while us Adopters have been away. What we would do without you, i don't know<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

Hello and Happy Easter to all! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Hello and welcome to TORC, Baron Alstine! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Don’t worry about your name – we could call you The Red Baron, maybe! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif"border=0> <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

So you are wondering what you are getting yourself into, huh?
Alright, here are the rules – ahem - *unfolds scroll, reads* - "By being adopted you become the legal property of TORC, The-One-Ring-Community. You give up all claim to what is commonly called „a life“, you will henceforth spend each minute you can spare talking about things like whether Balrogs have wings or whether the changes made for the movie were justified. You will not go on holiday for more than three days while you are active in a thread. Which is not a problem because even if you wanted to stay away from TORC for longer than that, you couldn’t. This is not called The-One-Ring-Community for nothing!"
Right, now you only need to sign with a bit of your blood – right here, underneath the Eye-symbol...! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-devil.gif"border=0> <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

Ok, I’m kidding – kind of! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0> <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>
I do hope you keep hanging around here, read some threads, post a bit when you have something to contribute to a discussion.

As to the club type thingy in your area: you could check the Events forum – TORCers are sociable creatures and like to try and get to know each other in real life, too.
However, TORC is not about local fan groups, really. As prettygaladriel has said, people from all over the world meet here, and that’s really the attraction of this place. You can meet people from everywhere and share your ideas!

striderchick, nice to see you’re still around, and thanks for the holiday wishes! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>
As to your not being able to use word, you could try the windows editor or wordpad instead.
But even if you type directly into the reply window – just remember to copy what you’ve written, then, if you get an error message, at least your post won’t be lost.

Sea Bell, LOL, it had never occurred to me to wonder about Balrog’s wings either before I came here – truly enlightening, isn’t it? <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>
And, yes, Smith of Wotton Major goes into the same direction as The Sea Bell, I think. Tolkien had a thing with possessiveness and the ability or inability of letting go, don‘t you think? <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>
I couldn’t suggest any older authors to compare to Tolkien either, I just asked because you said „modern authors“ as if to say there might be older ones you’d compare him to.
I’m not a great Narnia-fan myself, it’s worlds away from Tolkien, I think.

Alatariel, that’s a pity about your computer access. But I agree, with a teacher watching over your shoulder I wouldn’t enjoy TORCing either.

Hehe, PG, yes I’m the eternal temp – it seems to be my lot in life! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-rolleyes.gif"border=0> <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>
But I asked wilko and he said it would be ok for me to help out. I’ve been lurking here a lot, after all I’m a bookworm, and this is part of the bookworms group. I just felt too much of a newbie myself to be adopting other newbies when we started with the adoptions.
