Rose, you can have baked beans any time, not just for breakfast! And we do tend to have other things with them for breakfast, not just a bowl of beans!

I believe the beans in our baked beans are the same as the beans in the baked beans over in the US, it is mainly the sauce that is different. :) At least, that is what Wikipedia is telling me (and judging from personal experience of taste and texture, I'd say they were the same bean. :))

As for salad cream, it is like mayonnaise but with vinegar in it and quite a few other things in it. It is used as a salad dressing and on sandwiches and is primarily a British thing. :) What Wikipedia has to say

helonia.. oh.. I know you don't ONLY eat the beans for breakfast, but when we were in the U.K... EVERY breakfast we had, they were offered or were part of the buffet, and, being that beans (which to us looked like baked beans) is an unusual breakfast food in the US it stood out as something unusual. I think my daughter was the only one to eat them (and she liked them). I am more of a porridge gal. ;) Also the black 'pudding' (which we didn't figure out until the last day what it was... and to us it looked as if it had been burnt) and the broiled tomatoes. Of course there were also eggs & the more everyday expected breakfast foods as well.

From what I was told.. beans became a common breakfast food during the war because they were easy to store and a good cheap source of protein. That makes sense to me. :)

As for salad cream.. it kind of sounds like Miracle whip, which is sweeter & 'spicier' than mayonnaise... I think it has more vinegar in it. Miracle whip is also billed as a 'salad dressing'.

Talkin' about food.

Last night I had the burrito that I was going to have the night before. Good eats.

heliona, over here, I don't recall that Heinz sells much besides condiments and mostly Catsup. (Ketchup) But now that I am alerted I will pay more attention in the store. :D

I need to do a big shopping and stock up, don't want to be going out with "S" on the ground for butter or milk. :P Even though they are down playing it today, no real event....maybe snow showers in the morning, turning to rain.

Spinach and eggs!! yum.

Woofty, I would have made gravy from the drippings too. How did it turn out for you?

They turned out reeeeeally well. All moist and yummy and delicious. I am pleased. :D

(And the gravy was fabulous -- I tasted it even though I didn't have anything to put it on.)

Does anyone here own enameled cast iron pots/pans? What do they think of them? I was thinking of going out to look at some Lodge today.

I have a LeCreuset. Is that what you mean? I use it to bake bread at 500 degrees, so it's pretty oven proof.

I have three of them, Rose. One 5 quart dutch style oven and two large sort of like pie dishes, with scalloped edges. I love them and use them all the time. They are good up to 500 degrees, can go on the stovetop, the oven, the grill and dishwasher safe. But I do mine by hand so that the enamel doesn't chip.

Woofty!! So glad that the hens turned out nicely. I would have put the gravy on the hens themselves. But juicy and tasty is excellent. :D

Oh my.. Le Creuset.. the creme de la creme of enameled cast iron cookware. Oi, that stuff is expensive!

Yes, Eru, that is (basically) what I mean.. but there is a brand known as 'Lodge' which is also very good, made in the USA and .. cheaper than the Le Creuset. And .. it comes in a nice deep red.

I am a bit worried about the weight.. and how the weight is hard on .. well, the stove surface, cabinets, etc... I think I may go check it out this afternoon.

Do they chip easily? Do they clean up nice? Does the weight become a problem?

Eru! You're a big strong young guy! I am thinking of a big pan.. a HOT pan.. FULL of food! That can get mighty heavy.. and although I don't have any problems now.. I would think that arthritis & those pans wouldn't get along very well. :P

See my reply above yours, we cross posted.

Yes, the hard coat enamel can chip off, but if you wash it by hand, you shouldn't have a problem with that. They are weighty, but I never heard of them crashing a glass stove top or anything.

Mine are french made, but not that brand. I will have to look and see. I got mine from QVC and they weren't cheap, but not as expensive as the Huge name of Le Creuset.

Hm, pans I'm not sure. Mine is really deep, and is only for oven use I'm assuming.

Lodge brand is supposed to be very good.. and it comes in deep red. And it's 25% off. ;) I'm going to go check them out. :D

I wasn't so much worried about them crashing the glass top..as I would be about major scratching, chipping, denting. And about dealing with a large skillet full of hot food.

I am pretty much a weakling and I can wrestle with them, but I don't have a skillet. I mean a 5 lb pot roast with the taters and schtuff is heavy in anything I cook it in, let alone the cast iron dutch oven. But the cooking is so much better, easier clean up with the enamel surface. I like them. But I can see that they wouldn't be for everyone.

Skillets....miind out they can turn nasty

I got puter troubles. My mac HATES the new Sims 3 expansion pack and crashes like a Russian spaceship in game. This is distracting me from the proper discussion of food.

Sorry.

I will remind you to keep up your strength, you must eat. :P

I ate already my dear. Mrs A made a big pot of....CHILLI

My puter is not alone. Every mac-using S3 user is up in arms (making it hard to mod on my Sims site) Seems like we all paid forty dollars (or thirty pounds) to be beta-testers for a terminally buggy game.

Mrs A served rice with the chilli. Sides of tortillas, salsa and lemon wedges

Yum. Sorry you missed the website for Chililicious. It is now marked "under construction". We got to see it for a WHOLE day.

I can imagine that would make everyone on the website pretty snarky. I seem to recall that every time that SIMS puts out these expansions, it gives everyone fits and starts getting them to work.

Good luck calming the savage beasts. :D

I'll need it. Back in the days of yore, sung and storied in legend was a small puter company known as Aspyr. They used to port the Sins games to the mac.

Now this took time. Sometimes we mac-using lepers would get new games or EP's six months behind the PC. Late as they were they were bug and glitch free.

EA thought it could take on the new Intel macs. It can't. Has NO idea about macs can't code for them dosen't understand our OS.

I just got banned from EA's official site for asking these questions.

But dinner was fine

EA don't like difficult questions. I made a case about all the mac-users unable to use WA. Others from my site did the same. We all got the banstick.

Just originating from my independent site is enough. We get banned on sight.

But fear not our leader has the solution.

Well, hopefully they will work it out.

I am probably NOT going to eat much for supper. Had cheese crisp for lunch and I still feel it rumbling around in there. ;)

Off work here pretty soon. Then on to the bank and the store.

So hope to see you tomorrow, Ayslhyn. What is the weekend looking like for you? I should be around either day.
