Hello all,
I think I said I would join this guild, hmmmm
anyway I made a cloak once and it's still not torn to pieces from my wandering through the woods. It does go down to the half of the calf (I think thats what it is) and the only sucky part of it is the inside of the hood around the neck. I had no clue where to hem it so its all fringie.
Cloaks are a good starting thing and the only bad part is running out of thread when it's low on the spool thing.
(another topic) I noticed that latly I've been making shirts and things a little too tight just below the arm pit place. Does anyone know how to messure there the right way?

~ Storm Crow The Green
~ I return to you at the turn of the tide
~ Holder of the Earth Ring of Persuasion
~ Ent Caller (long live the Ents)
~ Wood Carver of the Wood Crafter guild

Stormcrow- can't help you much. I'm just now getting into trying to figure things out without a pattern- the only thing I can think of is trying making the armhole a little bigger.
Tari- hi!! I love that dress of hers, that will be fun for you. And I'm taking the rules as saying you (or someone else) made the dress, not bought it at a store. (BTW, if you're using a Simplicity pattern, they're having a contest too. First prize is $1000! You can find information at any Joann Fabrics- couldn't find it online. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif"border=0> I'm going to enter the elf dress I made for the Ren Faire this year.)
Jeanlily <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>- your comments about dresses made me laugh!! I'm generally a jeans sort of girl myself, although I'm a lot more into skirts than I used to be (as in, I'd rather wear a long skirt than shorts because I hate showing my legs!! Plus it's kind of a necessary thing when I'm teaching in the summer and it's too hot for pants, and skirts actually look decent when I make them, unlike most of my attempts at pants...<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-rolleyes.gif"border=0>) But I love dressing up in stuff, especially the fancy dresses and costumes. (Obviously, or I wouldn't be here!)
Anyway, my costume is coming along well now. All I have left to do is finish sewing trim on my vest, make the holes in the back to lace it up, and hem the sleeves and skirt. This contest was just the kick in the butt I needed to get it done! I'll try to find a way to post piccies of that and my elf dress when I get it done.

Cool, then I can still enter. And then I am thinking about entering the writing contest as well. I love contests! Good luck to all of you on your costumes. I love wearing costumes, and if I could, I'd wear them all the time. Hurray! My cloak is pretty long, I hope it works well with my costume. Anyway, Nearly done!

Writing contest? Where?? *Looks around frantically* Me love writing. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

I don't think I'll enter the contest...I dunno, I don't think that highly of my sewing ability. Does it have to be a LOTR costume, or just a costume? Mine is just "elfy/renaissance-y", but not any of the character's costumes.

I've been looking for fabric for my next cloak--I'm trying to get it ACAP (as cheap as possible<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>), because I need about 7 1/2 yards.

Namárië!
~Sil

Stormcrow, you should be able to find a dressmakers french curve at any fabric store for a couple of bucks. A really nice one that has alteration instructions printed right on it should only be seven to ten dollars. Just lay the plastic curve on your pattern and trace the new cutting line before cutting anything out, the size numbers and gridlines make it almost fool-proof. (but do try any alterations out on a cheap piece of muslin to make sure the fit is right before cutting into your expensive fabric.)

The problem with finding cool, new shoes is that I completely crazy about them- I tell everybody about them, and I run around wearing them with anything, no matter how dumb it looks... *Pathetic*

Personally, I hate shopping for shoes. Unless you absolutely need them, why buy them? Unlike my mother who buys shoes for fun.

Tigerlily, congrats on finding a pair!!!)
I hate shopping for shoes too, but that's because I have oddly sized feet which makes it hard to find ones that fit. Which is why I pretty much live in either my ratty old Birks or my tall black boots, depending on what time of year it is. That's also why I just tried to make my own for my costume. (They're actually not bad, with the costume. I tried it on the other day to see.)
I got my cape cut out last night!! I'm going to see if I can get it sewed together tomorrow night because we're going to the Renaissance Faire again on Saturday, there's no possible way I'll get my shieldmaiden costume done in time, my Renaissance elf dress has sheer sleeves and the weather is cooler now. So a cape would be nice. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Just out of curiosity, and for a little conversation starter- I know Luthy makes "regular" clothes too- do any of the rest of you do any sewing/creative stuff outside of costumes?

I personally don't like shopping, period. But, when one needs shoes, one must go shopping, and I tend to find cool shoes when i'm looking for something completely different.

Marching band shoes! Hehe....I almost wore a pair of those with my Ren dress. hehehehes

I make "normal clothes" too, although how normal they are can be and is debated. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> I pretty much make shirts...most have fun, big sleeves, or look Elfy and that sorta thing. Sometimes I design them, but I have the worst time with patterns, so usually I just alter already-existing patterns. People at school can always tell when I have made a shirt that I am wearing based on how weird it is. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> I liek making 'normal' stuff because then I can wear it and show it off. Heheheh.

Namárië!
~Sil

Yes, like you said I make "normal" clothes! Go me <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> I make shirts a lot, but I also make skirts and dresses. I have to have SOMETHING nice to wear to church, and its very difficult to find dresses these days that aren't black, strapless (or spaghetti-strapped), or very immodest... there's nothing wrong with black, but you get sick of it after a while <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-rolleyes.gif"border=0> And I don't like wearing spaghetti straps to church... so I have to make my own. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

I love those shirts with the fun sleeves!! I also tend to make a lot of my clothes, for much of the same reasons- I like the creativity of it, and I also need stuff to wear to church, especially since I'm up front for the music a lot. And I like the looks of shock and amazement I get when people ask me where I get stuff and I say I made it. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>
Well, my favourite is when they look at the purple skirt I made (my pride and joy, or at least one of many) and ask where I got it... and when I tell em I made it, they ask me to make them one. I've gotten at least twenty requests for that skirt... I refuse, though. That thing took me FOREVER!!! And I'm NEVER doing it again. EVER!! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif"border=0>

I have a jacket sort of like that. It's just a denim jacket, but I wanted more of a duster so I made it about down to my knees...it looks so cool on a windy day... Anyway, several of my friends said I should make one for them, but it took me so long to make it, I don't think I could do it again! (Especially since most of my friends are shorter than me, so the sizing would be all different.)
I have time to work on costumes tonight!! *dances around and then out of the thread*

I have time today too! I had time yesterday, but I was just not in the mood. I had that overwhelmed-feeling you get when you have no idea what you're doing... I have soooo many things to do...

Right now I'm working on a Frodo costume for my little sister. I'll try to post pictures when I get some of it done... it has to be done for Halloween... I think I'm going to go insane working on it... I better get on that...

I'm making her the brown pants, brown vest, brown coat, white shirt, and grey cloak. We don't have material for the white shirt yet, though! Ack!

I might need to rant about this once in a while, just so y'all know <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-rolleyes.gif"border=0>

Now where did you get the ears?????? I want a pair- I'd wear them randomly to friends' houses, act like they're not there, and then, when people notice, act like I didn't know they were there, and run around screaming "I'm an Elf, I'm an Elf!!!!"

A little immature, but fun. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> *Hmmm...add vampire teeth...*

Tiger, I got my ears at a local Halloween shop. They're the latex Woochie kind and technically they're called Space ears, but they look like the right shape when I stick them on. Although they're very pale, so they'll need stage makeup to look really good. I haven't worn them yet, but I think I may wear them around on Halloween just to freak people out. I'm also seriously debating whether to go to ROTK as an Elven Shieldmaiden, just because the ears are so fun!
The main reason I didn't wear them on Saturday was that when I went to the store, I was able to get adhesive but not the adhesive remover (they were out), and the stuff is ultra sticky so I didn't want to mess the ears up trying to get them off later. I haven't had time to go back since, but I have to this week because I need to try to get my friend a lightsaber or something for her birthday, so hopefully I can actually try them out soon. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Did you see the costume article on the front page(near the bottom, I don't know if everyone has the same format as me). I was looking at the costumes, and seriously, my cloak looks awesome, and if that is the competition I could win! Woohoo! Well, maybe not against the one that took 650 hours(though mine did take a long time, why would you spend that much time on a costume anyway? And now that I think of it, probably the more time you spend on it the better the costume it will be. Which means I should spend more time on my costumes....)Anyway, this is just a bunch of hopeful randomness that stretches the truth in my willingness to win at all things. Nevermind. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-rolleyes.gif"border=0>
Right, like Luthy said, Germany. They are sort of a peachy-orangey colour, and I know zippo about makeup, so I need some serious help. Does that AlleyCatScratch site have any makeup tips for ears? I'll go look.

"I'm an Elf!! I'm an Elf!!!" hehehhee

~Sil
