Silly Story stuff

Postby Redstone » Sat Apr 09, 2011 10:12 am

Understanding that much of LOTR was written to create a story, there's some quirky points that make me smile. While referencing those is purely anecdotal, it can be comical as well.

The first item I reference is, why did Frodo walk to Mount Doom? The eagles brought him back, why couldn't they have taken him there? Who's got a good theory? :).

One does not simply fly into Mordor!

Several reasons I think. First Eagles are not going to be happy having anyone ride them. They did this only in emergencies. True, this could be considered an emergency.

Next, this is a long flight. The eagles did only short range flights if carrying a large load. From Mount Doom to the gates of Mordor; from the top of Isengard and Zirakzigil. If they flew from the Rivendell they'd still need to stop and camp every night.

Next, they won't be subtle. Sauron will know something is up from the first second. He'll send spies and troops to figure out what's going on, attacking them every day, and once he knows the ring is being carried (which won't take long) he'll send out fell beasts and nazgul.

Perhaps the eagles could have picked up the hobbits when they were close, say near the black gate. Then you'd still have the get the hobbits that far, which was no easy task in itself. Then it is still a very long flight from the gates to Mount Doom, requiring at least one rest stop I think. Even with no stop it will take a very long time, and the fell beasts and some Nazgul are nearby, as well as Sauron himself. Plenty of time to catch up and attack them.

Finally, it would make an awful story.

I don't think I'd want to ride an eagle. Their backs look too slippery and I'd be afraid of falling off.

They smell too. Everyone knows that eagles do not bathe.

Are you sure you're talking about Eagles? I think you mean Dwarves. They have an unpleasant odor (we all smell, it's one of our five senses) and are not fond of bathing.

Eagles, on the other hand, preen.

My legs! My poor legs!
Why did I ever bring a hobbit on an adventure?!

Yes, but only under duress from raven-haired, alabaster-skinned princesses.
