The Servant's Calendar of Holidays and Events!

Postby Gandalf'sMother » Tue Jul 31, 2007 1:25 pm

Dear Servants of the Flame Imperishable,

I am looking to develop a calendar for Middle Earth-based, in-game holiday celebrations, which would be an easy, efficient and very immersive way of organizing events. This will, in my humble opinion, increase the Middle Earthiness of LOTRO tenfold, and give a very special quality to this kinship.
The holidays on this calendar could range from "Bilbo's Birthday" to "The Landing of the Faithful from Numenor Day" to "The Day of the Squirrel" which acknowledges the untimely deaths of all squirrels wantonly slaughtered by casual gamers. They could also be drawn from actual holidays celebrated by the denizens of Middle Earth. Any interesting potential holidays that do not have a specific date can have a specific date designated for it, in which case it will then remain fixed in time. A really great aspect of this would be to tailor organized events to their respective lore-based holidays. For example, the Return of Thorin to the Lonely Mountain day (or "Thorin's Homecoming Day") could feature a dwarven dancing show in Thorin's Hall, a trek up an imitation Lonely Mountain (any tall mountain in the Ered Luin), dwarf-based questing and activities, and an explicit ban on both short jokes and jokes about the seemingly asexual reproduction methods of this vertically-challenged people. The events can either be extensively planned (such as Bilbo's Birthday), or subtle and simple, such as a gathering in Thorin's Hall to observe a mere 1 minute of silence at a certain time on the anniversary of Thrain's death.

In order to keep with the lore, and with the time-period in which LOTRO is set, this calendar will reflect all events prior to the Fellowship of the Ring. I will begin with a listing of days of the year, which will gradually be filled in as research is completed by myself, and by others.

I encourage all kinship members to add their knowledge to this list, and I will then leave it to Nogg, the Chief Council Servant of the Flame Imperishable, to lead the charge on the nature of the events for each holiday. We can begin organizing events as soon as we have our first few dates solidified.

These celebrations can also, of course, be extended to other kinships, and we could even co-host events with other kinships, who would also put their time and resources into planning and recruitment, which could render these events highly successful (not to mention give SotSF very high visibility) This will very much meet the objecive of the 7th Scribble of the Secret Fire, which expounds upon the virtues of building bridges between kinships.

I hope this is a project you all are supportive of, and I look forward to its evolution over the coming weeks!

A Calendar of Holidays for the Servants of the Secret Fire - Gregorian Reckoning

NOTE: Dates are adjusted from the various Reckonings (calendars) in the books, whether it is Shire Reckoning or the Steward's Reckoning, to fit the Gregorian calendar. As Tolkien detailed, that would place Shire dates at "some" 10 days ahead of our own (the Gregorian). In the case of New Year's Day, further calculation would estimate that the Shire would celebrate it on our December 23 - eight days before our own New Year's Day. The reason for "8" as opposed to "10" is due to the differences in the number of days in our months, and those of the Shire calendar (in which all months had 30 days). All dates not explicitly mentioned by Tolkien are speculative, and draw primarily from the calculations made by Karen Wynn Fonstad. Sources (Fonstad, Karen Wynn. "The Atlas of Middle Earth" Houghton Mifflin Co., NY, NY. pgs. 98-99: Also, see calendar analyses at http://www.elvish.org/gwaith/calendars.htm

I am currently searching my backlog of books for Karen Wynn Fonstad's "Atlas of Middle Earth," which I have had for many years, and which I know includes Fonstad's educated estimations on the precise date of events in the Hobbit , which should be very useful in filling in interesting holidays for this calendar (Such as the Battle of Five Armies Day (the real Last Alliance) - or Thorin's Memorial Day. If anyone has the book, and locates their copy before I do, I would greatly appreciate the sharing of its contents, especially on specific dates.

In terms of celebrating events that stretch further into the past than the events of the Hobbit, I am open to speculations on the precise time of year of certain events mentioned in the Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales and the Children of Hurin - all storylines that had not been precisely fixed on calendar days by Tolkien.

Regards,
Boffo

I have that book and know exactly where it is. However, I am currently at a family wedding and am 1000 miles from home. If no one has found their copy before I get back on Tuesday, I'll be glad to fetch it.

I'm going through terrible game withdrawals. Any suggestions?

P.S. Thanks. However, as it seems I may have misplaced Wynn Fonstad, I reordered it and it should be arriving tomorrow. But thanks again for the offer!

I'm trying to convince my father-in-law to let me download the game. He seems to be agreeable. Who knows? I just might be able to get on for a bit!

Hi,

I'm currently researching some holidays to include (with appropriate celebrations), but I did notice that one of the most important holidays is missing - that for the formation of the Servants! I also think it would be fun to include (for those who are willing) the birthdays of either members or their characters. We can come up with a little present or mini-celebration for such occasions :) I'll start paying more attention to dates as I go back through the books (I'm currently rereading them instead of the new Harry Potter much to the chagrin of my fiancee )

I'm also going to start working on the calendar. I suppose if I didn't spend so much time on the game I'd have had more time to do this. :D

I notice tomorrow has an entry. Perhaps we can have an Elf versus Dwarf sparring match to celebrate?

Ath,

I like that! It can even be turned into a tournament where the best sparrers in their age group (i.e. 47-50s cannot spar with 20-25s) receive some sort of prize or jools. We may even include hobbits and humans, pretending to be dwarves and elves (perhaps we could ask that they dress in leftover elvish and dwarven armor, just for the fight?) The possibilities are infinite..... :)

Jaix,

Thanks for the heads up! I've added it. Must have a major celebration on that day. On April 27th, the Witch King of Angmar shall tremble in fear at the sound of our joyous cries!

Jaixiel, Athelian and all other interested parties,

When you develop a holiday, and settle on dates, times, agenda, etc., and you wish for it to be a multi-kinship event, it may be a good idea to post on the following thread in the LOTRO forums:

http://forums.lotro.com/showthread.php?t=40303&page=4

You should provide a link to a full description of the event, as we would not want a carefully plan thing to get out of control.

I am specifically thinking about THORIN'S HOMECOMING DAY and/or DURIN'S DAY

I have this crisp and vivid image of a massive procession in Thorin's Halls, perhaps led by a regally dressed dwarf on a horse at the front, followed by a few members of the Servants, and followed by scores of participants, in say, a train of 5-10 rows, all linked together via the "follow" command. This would be accompanied by a couple minstrels (or 10), that would follow the procession, while playing a particularly dwarven tune.

I would really love to see something like that happen, and I think it could happen on either holiday (which I believe are coming up in September and October). This could really be the Tolkien-immersion event of the year, and I think it would both be immensely enjoyable, and would put us on the map as a kinship with a great cultural element to our activities, which transcends mining and grinding.

Let me know what you all think!

Best,
Boffo

In doing research, I have noticed that most significant events have only the year documented, not the specific date or even month. Do you want me to randomly choose a date or let you know which holiday I would like to add and have you choose the date?

We should try to balance as much as possible to avoid having multiple events in one month and none in the next.

Also...you may add my birthday, January 24th, if you'd like!

Ath,

From the Silmarillion, for example, it is often mentioned that events (battles, etc.) occurred in the spring or winter. You can then make a guess as to when it may have occurred, and choose a date for it. I think that's teh way we should proceed. assign dates based on suggestions. Not completely random, but not completely accurate either.

I know a way that I personally would like to mark Sept 2 for remembrance. While on the game I'm going to post (brief) quotes from his works on kinship chat.

Would posting the occasional quote on OOC or another channel also be appropriate? I don't want to spam any channels, just acknowledge the day.

Excellent idea Ath. We could also all make an effort to use Tolkienisms throughout the day, while both chatting and questing.

And what about a fireside chat in The Bird and Baby, where Tolkien and the Inklings had their own discussions?

There was a memorial service? Where?

I was online on the 2nd and posted some of my favorite book passages in kinship chat. There just weren't very many people on to see it.

Ath,

Is that your characters birthday, or your own? The reason we should go with character birthdays is that it is quite probable that many members will not sign onto LOTRO if they are celebrating their birthdays with friends and family.

What do you think?
