Hey, does anyone have the translation for the writting on the title page of the LOTR series or the Silmarillion etc...? I tried to translate it but what I got didn't make any sense, at least I don't think it did anyway... I don't know. But yeah, if anyone knows what it says then I was just wondering. Doesn't it just drive you crazy when you are about this close || to knowing something and somebody says oh never mind, or you never figure it out? Well anyway, it does me.

P.S. Has anyone been to the thread "My Big Fat Elvish Wedding"? if you haven't, you should go it is hilarious! I think that it is the newest thread...not sure.

Okay, Okay, I know I have a habit of rambling on and I am sorry and I apologize. But, yet again I am hyper and there is no-one here to talk to. Oh, and Nienna, you have my support about splitting the Official Language Thread up into *<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> Sindarin <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> * or Quenya. I think that it a great idea!

I am officially going to stop typing now...BYE!!!! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif"border=0>

The writing on the title pages of LotR and the Silmarillion (and HoME, if it comes to that) are in Tengwar, thegypsy. Strictly speaking, that's a transliteration, not a translation, because the language is English, you just need to switch alphabets.

Follow the instructions for deciphering Tengwar found in the first post. The common Tengwar chart is found in Appendix E of your LotR. (The Appendicies are at the end of the volume if you have a one volume version, or at the end of RotK if you have a three volume version. Or not there at all if you have some crappy translation.)

Hey there!

I tried reading the FAQ about Elvish and Elbereth's idea about adopting novices in elvish was inspiring. However, when I tried posting on the thread, it wasn't working. Any idea if another one like it exists? Let me know!

Just kidding, it's working now. Silly me.

I dunno if this has been addressed or not, since I'm incredibly lazy, and didn't feel like scrolling through all 11 pages (I did read the first post...)

But I have found a rather useful Roman-Tengwa/Tengwar Roman Transcriber... I also found Dragon Flame, (Downloadable here http://www.jrrvf.com/~hisweloke/sindar/documents/download.html) Unlike the Grey Company stuff, it is real Elvish, and checks out with Ardalambion resources. Also, if anyone is interested, I made a program for a computer ISU that gives an English/Elvish word, and you give the equivalent. If anyone wants the link, just say.

LotR Vol. I Book 1 (page 191 in my version), there they say Tom Bombadil is singing something in a very old language that none of the hobbits understand, anyone know which language is meant? <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

All right, it's stupid question time. I read the sticky/FAQ thread and went to the link. Accessed my name (Eleanor). Now, there is a flower by almost that same name in ROTK.....Sam's daughter's name. So does the definition that I received (and already knew...it is derived from Helen)indicate that Eleanor IS the Elvish translation, so that there isn't one? That's fine, if that is so. I am just confused. (a common state for me!).
I just cannot believe that elanor and Eleanor are so far apart, entymologically speaking that they wouldn't be "related".

bottom line: does my name mean white flower? (in all forms of Elvish)
Sorry to bother you all, but I have no idea where exactly to put this question. thanks for your time.

Gliraen37

I reckon this question belongs to the Quenya and Sindarin translation threads, but anyway... <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>
Yes, Eleanor is a variant of Greek Helen which means "ray/sunbeam", therefore it would be
Q. Alcie
S. Glinanor

Elanor, Sam's daughter's name, does not mean "white flower" at all, but "star-sun" in Sindarin (Q. elanar)because of its golden and silver flowers.
Don't know what name list or translator you used but it is definitely wrong about your name.
Maybe the mistake has something to do with the very similar morphology of both names?

Eowyn37

Same thing, this belongs to the Quenya and Sindarin translation threads <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>
Anyway, Dana could be a variant of Daniela or Danielle which means "God is my judge"
Q. Eruname
S. Eruvadhiel / Eruvadhriel

or Russian Bogdana "gift from God"
Q. Eruanne
S. Eruantiel

~Breogán, i vornelleth~
Man cenitha i-aduial vedui?
Thank you so much Breogan! I think I got confused b/c the name elanor is used for a small white flower in ROTK. Glinanor.....not bad; I've been called worse! lol

I would love to do this the "right" way and study it etc., but between kids, work and school.....not enough time in the day. So thanks again!

Could I ask you to do Laura, Robert and John? Or am I a PIA?!

have a great day!

some suggestions...

Postby Helkabeleth » Fri Jul 30, 2004 7:07 am

a few recommendations, take 'em or leave 'em!

-mention that all the movie dialogs can be found at Gwaith also
-post a link to the extensive Sindarin/Noldorin dictionary at http://user.7host.com/alcarnarmo/, which is currently down for major revision to include recent reconstructions, addenda to the Etym., etc.
-for new learners of Sindarin, Taramiluiel's Home is a great reference
-for more advanced students of Sindarin, I Lam Arth's insightful articles are pioneers!

Mmm, that's about all I can think of for now. Thanks for making this thread! Any chance it can get a sticky?

I can have an Elvish greeting/ blessing cast in stone for the courtyard of my friends' new building. It can't be very long and not in Tengwar. Any suggestions for something suitable? I have considered Suilad, mellyn but am open for suggestions. It is a unique opportunity. My friends are physical therapists and many people will get a chance to see this.
