I dread the release of the Two Towers.

Ick. That'll be disgusting.

Remember me?

Man, I'm famous!

My renown is only one fourth or so of Nienna's. Whoa...

That translation thread is soooooo cool.

dam its half on the 2nd page...
fortunately my brains have thought out a question again <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

is it permitted to lengthen vowels (or, shorten them) in poems, for making another syllable stressed? (to fit in the metrum of course)

like, lets say, undume, stressed on the 1st u, but if your metrum needs the 2nd to be stressed, can you then make undùme from it?
(or, angaráto => angarato)

IMHO, if the change of stress is under the rules, why not do it if it improves the sound of a poem.

The answer to Didi's question about vowel length though is probably, no. The vowel lengths of a particular form are fixed and can't be shifted on a whim. Changing them for metrical reasons is at if not beyond a poets licence. At any rate, we have no examples of Tolkien mentioning or exemplifying variable vowel lengths in poetry.

Hey, guys, I've thought of spliting the Official Translation thread into two seperate ones -- one for Quenya and one for Sindarin -- would I get support if I did so?

My time is limited right now and I just can't seem to face digging into what the Official Translation thread has become. Two would be so much easier -- although we'd have to keep them on topic. As the creator obviously much of that responsibility would fall on me, but I can live with that. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> Does anyone agree?

Yes, Didi, I know, I posted in that thread too, remember?

The point to this post was asking if I would have support for closing down the Official Translation Thread and starting up the two new ones. The question still stands.

It would be good to make a translation thread for each language, not just Q and S.
Still splitting one into two is a good idea.

As I said in the FAQ, Asa, Examination of the chart with its accompanying phenomes will quickly reveal these relations.

That is, go to Appendix E, look at the chart, read the accompaning text. Tolkien lays it all out for you.

Hope that helped. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Satch, the Appendices are found at the end of your volume of RotK, or at the end of the book if you have the one volume edition. They are classified by letter (Appendix E is the important one to linguists) and also titled. Hope that helps. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Nienna
Language Forum Tirno

By the way, I found out what the Black Speech is and I don't want to learn it any more... But I'm not giving up hope about teaching myself how to speak Sindarin. So wish me luck. Please.<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>
