Calling all those who speak elvish, and those who want to learn

Tolkien's worlds were birthed out of his love of language and his work at creating new ones. Enter into discussions surrounding Tolkien's languages.

Postby *Elbereth* » Sat Aug 31, 2002 2:09 am

I see people asking to learn elvish here, and I thought and this is what I came up with. All those who know elvish can take on a couple apprentices to learn elvish. (I have an apprentice on TGH named Este who is finishing up with my Sindarin lessons.) I guess there should be some guidelines:

For Teachers: Post how many apprenticies you'll take and which languages you speak. Once you see a wannabe-apprentice, just post that you'll teach the member, and include your e-mail so you can do it on a messenger, like MSN or AOL.

For Apprentices: Post the one language of Quenya, Sindarin, Valinorean, Numenoran, Westron, Black Speech, etc that you want to learn, and in bracets put your second choice, and wait for a teacher to accept you.

***this portion of the post has been removed due to the fact that the poster has been unable to access the messageboards (I couldn't log in for some maudit reason) and thus, the info that was here couldn't be updated and now it's too late. Once this thread reaches the max I'll start a new one and i will update it!***

If nobody will teach me... then I guess I'll go for Sindarin.

hey Rowanoak, is that a coinsidence that you took Sindarin and Valinorean... I guess it just gives you a larger chance of having a teacher.... no probs there.... am I babling to much? I'd love to bable in Quenya... must go find my pills.

Valinorean is the tongue of the Valar, Didi, the one the elves didn't like to hear and changed around quite a bit. The Valar adopted Valarin Quenya soon after the elves came to them.

I suppose I could teach Quenya, but the only time I could find to chat would be Fridays, Saturdays, and holidays, plus occasional emails. But if there are people around who are willing to have things go (or at least begin) slowly, I'm willing.

Would it be a good idea for one to go through the WHOLE Ardalambion course before trying to get a teacher?

I will teach Sindarin and Quenya to no more than three people.

Warning #1: I am just starting college and may be busy for a while, but will try to be available as much as possible.

Warning #2: I do not teach Helge Fauskanger's idea of Tolkien's languages (despite the respect I have for the man); that is, I do not subscribe to the belief that there is or should be a "complete" or "final" version of Quenya or Sindarin that can be used as a modern language is. What I know (to some degree) and am willing to teach are the variances Tolkien's languages went through as he developed them. Please respect that.

Warning #3: Swooners and fanfiction not wanted. (Yes, I am a horribly prejudiced person.) Serious students only.

--Nienna

Elbereth, I know only a little Sindarin. Not a lot, but some. Btw, your Elvish is not Grey Company's elvish, right? No offense meant; just double checking. Thanks.

Sky

I don't have MSN messenger and my parents are being very awkward; where can i get it? I'd love to learn Sindarin, but Quenya is just as good. I don't think I'm reallyslow at learning... <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

OK, I just downloaded MSN messenger. I want to learn Sindarin, but Quenya is just as good. I can't say I know any, though, so I'd be starting from scratch.

Yes, Christine ill accept you. and Sky. Must learn how to say no, though.
I'm teaching throgh E-mail, as most of my students don't have MSN.
I'm gonna warn you about my lessons: their easy. The tests are h*ll and Kristy is quoted as saying (about the finals) "4 hours of h*ll."
Finals:

Translate a Sindarin paragraph into English
Translate a Sindarin & Tengwar paragraph into english
Translate a Sindarin & Cirith paragraph into english
Translate a paragraph into sindarin
Record you reading your translation onto MP3 (so I know if you're pronouncing it right)
Put your translation into Tengwar
Put your translation into Cirith
all in 4 hours, and you have no access to notes, books, past lessons, etc. Fun, eh?

No, I teach the Sindarin that Tolkien created. I taught it to myself while reading his works, and compiled it into a dicionary. It wasn't hard for me, I spoke 4 languages at the time (english, french, german, greek). I was 10 years old.
