Does anyone know greek? Please let me know

Tolkien's worlds were birthed out of his love of language and his work at creating new ones. Enter into discussions surrounding Tolkien's languages.

Even though I'm not requesting anything in elvish in witch case I would have asked in one of the threads, I'm only trying to find someone who knows greek. Therefore, I thought this forum would be good. Afterall Tolkien knew greek...<BR><BR>I'm on a little mission for a friend of mine who is really interested in greek and is really keen on learning this, but has no teacher. My friend is not a member at TORC and doesn't know where to look elswhere. <BR><BR>If you know greek and are willing to teach my friend, please mail me.<BR>She knows english well enough and will try her best to understand.<BR><BR>My e-mail: barefoot_elf@hotmail.com (so you didn't have to look in the profile-room)<BR><BR>Thank you for your help.<BR><BR>-Sarincë Altavalwen

I don't.. but you might want to try searching in The Bird and the Baby forum for a Greek thread, or starting one yourself. There are Dutch, German, Spanish, etc. threads all around--see if you can find a Greek one.

Is your friend old enough to attend college? Try that....if any college nearby teachs Greek. If not, do what everybody else does: buy some "learn Greek" audio tapes/CD's from the local bookstore. You won't learn the grammatics and other aspects of the Greek language, but it will teach you the basics....and that's as good a place to start as any..

I have studied bot ancient and modern Greek, mainly ancient. A very good beginning for modern Greek is a course called "Speak Greek in Two Months" . It uses a phonetic method and has two cassettes and a manual with grammar. The woman who developed it, Helen Dumas, is Greek and a teacher of a Greek school in California. She can be reached from 7:00PM to 10:00 PM on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays at (310) 373-0808. I can't find the address that we used to order sets for the church but you should be able to get one from her by phone. I found this easy and useful. <BR> I also have the multicassette Barron's Foreign Lan. Institute set but it moves too fast and is harder to understand. For self taught ancient Greek, I would recommend "Athenaze". There are 2 volumes and teachers manuals as well. They can be gotten at barnes and Noble. Also there is a web site called Greece in Print which offers learning materials. I love my trilingual (English, Greek, French) picture book.<BR> If you live in a city with a college, ask if a professor will give private tutorials - that is what I do for ancient Greek.<BR><BR><BR>

<BR>In Dhimotiki (modern spoken and written Greek), when using <i>polý</i> or <i>exairetiká</i> to emphasize an adjective describing a noun, where is it placed in the combination<BR><BR>article + adjective + noun<BR><BR>? Before the article, after it or after the noun (unlikely perhaps...)? Are there disparities?<BR><BR><BR>

Please, if you know greek; just say it. Seems like you know some. My friend is going away in next month and maybe she'll learn greek on her way, but it would have been cool to have someone that could answer her questions and explain grammar and such. Not asking for much. <BR><BR><b>And please: IF YOU DON'T KNOW GREEK OR ANY LINK, PLEASE DONT POST HERE. YOU'RE GIVING ME FAKE HOPE</b>

Εκπλήσσομαι! Δεν περίμενα να ξέρει κανείς Ελληνικά σ΄αυτο το site.

Μπορείς να με βοηθήσεις; Προσπαθώ να μεταφράσω την φράση " Never cared for what they know, but for what you know." στα quenya...
Θα με βοηθήσεις;

Κατερίνη μένω(δίπλα στην Θεσσαλονίκη). Ίσως σου φανεί γελοία αυτή η ερώτηση αλλά αγόρι είσαι ή κορίτσι;
Α! Πως μπορώ να απευθυνθώ στο Official Quenya Thread;

:wink:

Χάθηκες τελείως :)

Λοιπόν, βρήκα μια λύση και παρακάτω είναι η πρόταση στην Quenya με λίγες μικρές αλλαγές.

Úvoro úmen merë ista mana istantë, mal mana elyë ista.

Που σημαίνει Ποτέ δεν ήθελα να ξέρω τι ξέρουν, αλλά τι ξέρεις μόνο εσύ. Είναι οσο πιο κοντά μπορούσα να φτάσω, γιατί όπως σου είπα δυο λέξεις λείπουν, αλλά αυτό που έκανα είναι να φτιάξω την Úvoro μόνος μου και κυριολεκτικά σημαίνει όχι-πάντα

Ελπίζω να σε βοήθησα. :)

Τα λέμε :wink:
