Mahima, just to tell you that your link to the Halloween Gala is not working...

It send you to a page where says: "We're sorry. The page you are looking for does not exist on Tolkien Online."

Fortunely, I was able to find it by myself!! (it wasn´t so difficult. I think I´m just getting into the forum spirit) <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

I will try to add the good link here for anyone interested...

[L] http://www.tolkienonline.com/thewhitecouncil/reply.cfm?catid=54&;threadid=56376&messid=2350490 [/L]

Thanks for pointing that out, Sandorf, there seems to be a problem with links on TORC. I'll raise the issue with the moderators, thanks a lot.

Glad you were able to find the party. See you there. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

Teleperion1234, you are editor of The Two Trees of Valinor? While I've not heard of that publication (is it an online mag?) it does sound very interesting. Tell us abit more about it! Sounds like you'd enjoy the Books forum too.

Sandor, in the Prancing Pony forum you will find a number of threads which will assist in getting started in Roleplay.

The thing to remember with TORC roleplay is that it is not the traditional gaming many people are used to--rather it is a collaborative storytelling format, with no winners or losers, and it all relies much more on character and plot.

Some threads which will provide the fundamentals are in Wilko's links post. If you want specific directions on RP threads, please feel free to email me on [E]novice_torc@yahoo.com.au[/E]

And your English is lovely, btw. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

A tardy reply to such good wishes and a welcome to Sandorf! Kolton is indeed my first grandchild and a prince of a baby to boot!! He already has the whole family in total control. Novice, everything people say about grandchildren being the best is true--I never believed it until now. The birth, however, was much more difficult to endure--to watch my daughter give birth was so much harder than doing so myself!! All is well, however, and the fun is just beginning. His mother dressed him up as a bumblebee for Halloween and I thought I would stroke out, he was so cute! The most wonderful thing is to see how much this child is like my beloved father, who passed away a couple of years ago. Emily, my daughter and Kolton's mother, also is struck by this and it thrills her to have a part of her "Papa Bill" with her again. I speculate that part of the wonder of a grandchild is to see the continuation of the family--it strikes me much more so than with my own children. Now that I am older I also seem to have so much more time just to enjoy him-and when I get weary, I pass him back to his Mom. Glorious!!

(Well ok, to be honest, this is my second post, the first one was spent on posting an add on the Fellowship of the Roommates thread... Gathering anyone?) But hey, this is still my first DAY of posting, and although I spent hours reading here, varied subject threads and various guidelines alike, I feel nowhere close to understand how this wonderful but monstruously big site works. Like for instance, is THIS the correct place for newbies to ask any and all questions regarding the White Council? <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-confused.gif"border=0>

In reply to Novice's question a little while back, I don't think there is anything wrong with your Adoption group since it is in fact your kindness and warmth that ultimately convinced me to ask to be adopted, seeing I had I finally found a group that made me feel comfortable enough to jump in... Ok, here it is, a LITTLE about myself... (you'll notice fairly quickly that I'm an awfully chatty person, so never expect a short post from me... <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>) I do tend to babble a lot... Sorry! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-blush.gif"border=0>

I'm a 26 year-old French-Canadian girl (there's your explanation about the origin of all those nasty mistakes I make or even the weird words I invent. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> Sorry about that. A friend of mine is trying to help me polish my English, but well progress as never been a fast thing... So for now, you'll have to suffer at the hands of my appalling grammar!).

I've been a translator for the last 4 years and a public servant, and have a graduate certificate in localization, which is where I've discovered myself a love of computer sciences and Webdesign.

So besides French (obviously) I've learned English (even more obvious <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif"border=0>), German, Russian, Spanish and Italian (does Latin counts? <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>), most of them I have lost now, at least let's say my ability to carry a conversation is now "dormant". But it still amazes me how I haven't lost all of it totally even seeing since how long I haven't practice in anyway. I love travelling and went to Europe twice and many times to the USA.

I like, no love, no adore, no worship all things Tolkien, whether they are the original thing or the new modern version. Meaning that even if I didn't read much on the Tolkien front yet (sorry to disappoint you all, I'm afraid I'm not a veteran Tolkien reader), I'm getting around to it, as fast as real life and the movies will permit it (I'm careful not to read anything before seeing it, since that tactic as worked for me for the first movies. It's not a matter of not getting spoiled, but rather not imagining things for myself and then getting disappointed - Cause I have one majorly rampant imagination <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>).

Somehow, I manage to love the books AND the movies, without any preferences. Maybe it's a lack of discernment on my part, but I prefer to see it as being open-minded <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif"border=0>. I'm also always seeing the glass as half-full and is absolutely incapable to be angry or depressed. I do have my melancholia episodes, but they never last as I'd do anything to have fun and laugh and make everyone happy around me.

I'm crazy about art, crafts and costumes (which explains the fact my house looks like a war zone in preparation for the Gathering of the Fellowship <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>). I tend to try everything and learn about anything I can, which makes me a beginner at all sorts of thing but never mastering anything I've undertaken (just look at how many languages I've studied). I know, I know, I have to work on this and learn some measure of focus.

I've recently discovered or rather rediscovered fanfiction and I've even been trying my hand at it, with inconclusive results. Well at least it's a great deal of fun, is an excellent opportunity to meet people and is a really good mean to improve on my English writing skills. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

So that's about it. That's me in all my silliness, with my red hair and my crazy dream of buying a motorcycle next year...

Pfwweeeewww, that was some lengthy post... I'm sincerely sorry, it probably was quite boring, but describing myself isn't my favorite activity and I tend to erase everything if I chance to review so... that will have to suffice (or not, in which case I'll be happy to answer any and all questions! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>)

Hope I'll hear from you! (To quote Wilko, I hope you'll find me friendly, funny and intelligent enough! – Love that sentence by the way <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>)
<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>
EoL
Hello!

Yes, me again! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-rolleyes.gif"border=0>

Since Mahima asked (so basically, it's her fault! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif"border=0>), here'S a LITTLE MORE (again!) about me, but this time it's, at least related to books... (In which case, am I still supposed to post here or elsewhere? <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-confused.gif"border=0>)

So, as for reading (yeah, I know, it's about time I get to it since it's the whole topic of your group <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif"border=0>), I feel like I might be qualified here. I've been a bookworm since I first learn to read and although real (adult boring) life doesn't leave me with much time, I'm still very much one at heart.

I remember back then, I would spend my summers at my mother's and we would go each night to the public library and borrow the maximum amount of books allowed. First of course there was comics, but after, I can remember reading the whole Black Stallion series. (I know, I know, no master piece here but hey... those guys got me through pretty rought times back then... <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>) These were my first encounter with the concept of series and I've been loving it ever since.

In highschool, I was introduced to Frank Herbert's Dune masterpiece (which I read entirely... which reminds me there is two House of... waiting for me to read them somewhere in my house... which THEN, means I did not technically read all of them yet... but does it count since they're from his son? <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif"border=0>). Since it was at about the same time I started to religiously watch Star Trek TNG, it got me going in the whole science fiction genre (and English since basically, TV is where I learned English <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>).

There was a point where I read an awful lot of something that could be described as chick historical lovestories novels, which I read because the story would take place around the middle ages or some other very inspiring era and were easy enough to read in English. This is when I started to read almost exclusively in English.

The first books I bought in English were some Mercedes Lackey, including Oathbound I think, which I loved. At one point my cousin got me hooked on Anne Rice, the Vampires Chronicles, of course! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0> I've read all of them too.

I also have a treasure of individual books that are all special to me. Some by famous authors, others that are from not very famous people. But that will have to be left to another post (some of them I don't even remember the title, just the cover. I'm pretty visual you know! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>)

I can remeber a whole story written from a cat's point of view, with a bunch of other creatures... The cats even had a religion! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif"border=0>.

There was also a big novel about the amazons during the last days of Troy. Very well written and a bit sad too.

Oh and some adaptation about the princess of the swans tale, with a big black swann on the cover...

And Tyran, from Isaac Asimov. There is so much, I could spend the night coming up with more and more titles...

I'm not much into horror (I know, I know, he prefers to be referred to as a suspense writer.., but still) but I loved Stephen King's Eyes of the Dragon.

Oh and also a tiny book on a magician with a big secret, which was written either by Mercedes Lackey or Marion Zimmer Bradley. Can't remember exactly.

What else? Well let's say it's enough for now and if I remember something else I'll tell you later. As for Tolkien, I've only read the Fellowship and part of TTT, but unfortunately in French (which is rumoured, by the way to be one of the worst translation ever). I'm planning to start the Silmarillion as soon as possible and it's a certainty that the rest will follow. some of them are already lining up the various selves of my house, waiting to be discovered and savoured.

See ya!
<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>
EoL

Whooooo, we got a nice positive chatter with us! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>
Thanks for all the info, EoL.

BTW, are you sure you want your name to be acronymed as Eol? There is a Dark Elf in the Silmarillion named Eol. Reminds me of that him. He wasn't very nice. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

Red hair, eh? So cool. I'm from India and everyone is black-haired. In all my trips abroad, one of the most fascinating things has been everyone's hair colour! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

Thank you so much Mahima, you sound really nice yourself. I really appreciate the fact that you take the time to answer my clumsy posts.

Eöl, yeah, I know about him because even thought I haven't read a single line of the Silmarillion, I have read a lot in the Encyclopedia of Arda, especially the events related to Gondolin/Ondolindë (but I have to admit I got quite confused... <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-confused.gif"border=0> I guess it's not the best format to learn about ME history... <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0> I really oughta find myself some pocket format English copy of the Silmarillion so I can read it in the bus).

So I remember he decided to "exile" himself or rather kept to himself in a weird forest all alone, got a wife and kid (did I imagine this or have I read somewhere he forced her to stay or something? %)). Oh yeah, now I remember, he killed his wife while trying to kill his son... True, true, he doesn't seem like a nice fellow at all. Plus he was executed too, brrrrr.

Is being a Dark Elf so bad? EoA describes them as "Elves who refused the summons of the Valar to Valinor, or fell away on the Great Journey, and never saw the light of the Two Trees." Does that make them bad? Granted, it looks like Eöl was evil, but is it related to his Dark Elf status?

Well I guess I need another acronym or nick name. I tend not to use Eryn cause then people think it's my real first name and it isn't. But that could do... <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

As for the red hair... unfortunately, it's a far from natural color... Somehow, I guess it's a result of being a too well-behaved teenager, now, all grown-up, I decided to do it... try to imagine my colleagues (all 40-50 something very conservative public servants) reaction at work! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif"border=0> Well that's not why I did it, I just decided that ten years was long enough to wait to do something as trivial as to dye my hair red <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0> I have always envied the Irish/Scotish for their bright red NATURAL hair color. I guess I always was a little "Anne of the Green Gables" (L.M. Montgomery) at heart.

Woah India... sounds so exotic to me. I guess it's a question of where we live and what countries sound contrasting with ours. Where did you go? I love travelling and hearing about others' trips abroad... especially when it's someone that sounds nice, open-minded and curious about the rest of the world... <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

Eryn
or
EoL
or
Some Other nickname...
Any suggestions? <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

PS: Is this still the thread to post this? I'm sssooo scared of posting at the wrong place... Oh well, just tell me then...

Whoa, new people, it's about time I dropped back in here <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Welcome, Sandorf, Telperion and EoL (if you're happy with that name) <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

EoL, yes, this is the thread to post this stuff. Though wheneever you feel like having just a conversation, as opposed to a settling-in, getting-to-know-you type conversation, try the Bookworms Lounge thread in Talk. Most of us adopters post there (though I've fallen behind lately <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-blush.gif"border=0>), plus a bunch of other interesting people. Basically, we don't want this to just turn into a chat thread, and in any case the one in Talk has more going on.

You seem to be interested in lots of areas, I hope you find things to interest you here <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>. What forums have you looked in? With your language skills have you ever tried Sindarin or Quenya? I'm interested in languages, and post in the Languages forum, I just don't have the knack for learning them somehow.

Have you seen the Other Authors forum? One tip if you do - do a search before starting a new thread on an author, there's a good chance someone else has already done one. Though that applies to almost any new thread you feel like starting in any forum.
I've not read most of the books you mentioned, though I was recently given Dune, a shameful gap in my geek-reading background.

Wow, people are sssooo friendly here... It's a shame I didn't get around to suscribe before... I missed out on a lot of fun... <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

Thank you Wilko for the explanation... I guess I'll take my chit-chat elsewhere <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0> A big thank you too for the thread suggestions... I'll check them out for sure... These are sure to interest me.

As for Dune, I remember, once I had read all what eight? of the books, I was amazed by the complexity of the civilization Mr Herbert had created. The only thing is, I was about 12 so who knows... I haven't re-read them since so maybe I wouldn't be so impressed now... But I greatly doubt it since many adults I know have read it and loved it... Is that what you meant by scope? (I'm sorry, like I said, English is not my first language and sometimes, some well the meaning of some "technical" terms eludes me... Well ok scope is not a technical term, but... Let's just say I'm not sure what the scope of a book is exactly... <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-blush.gif"border=0>) But please do tell me what you think about it once you start it... Maybe I'll see you on the Dune Thread? <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

I guess also that maybe Mahima might be more enclined to answer my question about her travels on the talk thread instead? or maybe on a travel/trips thread? Oh oh, I'm still confused <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-confused.gif"border=0> I feel like such a dummy... It shouldn't be so hard to understand.. the concept is fairly simple... why can't I get it? <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-crying.gif"border=0>

Oh well... I guess I'm a little slow! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>
Anyways, thank you so much every one!
<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

The-One-Who-Doesn't-Know-How-To-Sign-Anymore... <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

Wilko, all those RP resource threads are very useful, but they do look like quite an intimidating list.

Maybe the "Logistics in RP" and "Get your RP off to a good start" could be removed...or even better, a few of those links could be replaced by RP Resources A-Z, which has links to everything!

Re Dune, I think you will love the first three books, which were written by Frank Herbert in his prime. Without a doubt, the scope is vast and detailed, with finely drawn charactes and gripping plotlines. The creation is entirely believable and some of the concepts he introduces are quite intriguing and original.

However, as the series goes on it becomes quite desultory -- pastiche. The books written posthumously by his son (using old notes) are truly dreadful IMO.

Greetings and welcome, ErynofLasgalen <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> It's great to have such a chatty person on board...makes me feel much more comfortable with my own mammoth posting habits. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

I hope you're not offended by my Dune critique. It's only my opinion, after all...and tastes do (and should!) differ.

Wow... I still can't believe how much you are all so welcoming. I mean of course it's the whole purpose of an adoption thread, but you really are being more than friendly. You can't all imagine how much I appreciate it. Especially since I've posted on two threads and got four answers here and none on the other thread... <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-crying.gif"border=0> granted the other one was more an "add thread" but still... what I'm trying (very clumsily) to say here is that all your nice replies are making me feel better and less out of place (how could I not... with all those great compliments... <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>)

Hey Novice, if you keep your posts in a nice mammothy range, I promise not to shorten mine... <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0> We could found a club... The giga-giant-gigantic-posters... hmmmm nah... wouldn't work... If you are as half as chatty as me, the thread wouldn't be big enough for the both of us... <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif"border=0> Just kidding, sorry, I feel quite silly tonight.

Also, never think a critique could offend me, even if it's about me. When someone voices an opinion, if it's well meant how could I be offended. I totally agree with you, tastes do AND SHOULD differ... <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

Besides, like I said, it's been a long time since I've read the first series of books and as for the most recent ones, I haven't read them yet so there a very good chance I might even agree with you on this once I do... <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0> Well I guess we have at least one taste in common... Tolkien! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif"border=0>

Well, that's it... Besides, I have to keep some thing for the chat thread... If I can find it that is... Hope I'll see all of you there! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

[goes away...]

...

...

[comes back]

arhem... Wilko? Where you referring to the Bookworm Adopters/Adoptees Chat Thread? Yes? No? Maybe? eerrrshhh If not... could you please point it out to me... the only talk I could find was in the Bird and Baby section and there were two threads, one which did not sound right and the other was very short so... Well I'm not sure... But I did try the search feature. and then another search and two more poped up... hmmm I'll have to do some more search...

Well thank you all!

nelagsalfonyre <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif"border=0>

Hey Eryn! That is a nice nickname. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> you can stick to this. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

And yes, the thread which Wilko was referring to is the Bookworm Adopter/Adoptees chat thread. The reason it is so "short" is that all of us, the adopters and the adoptees have been a quite lax in using that thread to chat! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-blush.gif"border=0>
Maybe you can change all that. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

And to implement that change, I'll answer your questions about Eol and my travels in that thread. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

see you there!

I actually meant the Lounge, linked in Mahima's sig, sorry for being vague. We started the parallel chat thread a while ago, but people seemed to prefer staying here, or going to the Lounge. But whatever thread you feel comfortable with <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Novice, thanks, I didn't know what was in that RP resources thread <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Eryn, Welcome! i know i'm very late, but ahhh, well. It's nice to have a chatty person around...i haven't even met you properly yet and i like you already<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>....though, knowing so many languages, you've really out me out of it. I prided myself on being bilingual, but you've far surpassed that. I'm thinking of learning japanese some day.....but i heard it's really difficult. What do you think?

Great list, Wilko, but like others said, it does seem a little overwhelming. I'm with what Novice says, because she's a far more experienced RPer than i am<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

Sky4, hello and welcome to the bookworm's lounge<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> Consider youself adopted. How about telling us a bit about yourself?

striderchick, good to see you again! how have you been? Buy no doubt, since i haven't seen you much lately<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

ahhhhhh....HOLIDAYS!! i'm....so....happy!!! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-crying.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

Hi Sky, welcome to TORC <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>. Want to tell us a bit about yourself?

PG - yes, I think the entire link list is too much really. When I've time I might do something about that, not sure what though. Maybe pick out the most important ones and copy them into the first post. Or just prune the whole thing down.
