I must say I wouldn't have known from the top of my head that "Seven ages" is from As you like it, esp as it doesn't sound like something from a light comedy - kudos for that!
Still surprised the song had everyone baffled, though.

I thought it was really popular, and it describes what the play is about: running away into the forest to find some peace from pesky humans. I've always thought that the Forest of Arden was the most memorable aspect of the play.
The song is really just there for the its own sake. It's sung by one of the courtiers, I don't remember what his role is in the rest of the play, and it's in a standalone scene that only contains the performance of this song (which also, I think, makes it a bit of a key-moment for the whole play).
