Children of Hurin #1 on New York Times Bestseller List

Beleg Departs Menegroth from The Children of HurinThe Children of Hurin, the most recent posthumous book published by JRR Tolkien's son Christopher, reached #1 on the New York Times hardcover fiction bestseller list.

It seems that this is better than hoped for by the publisher, though not exactly surprising considering the continuing effect that the success of the films has had on everything with Tolkien's name on it.  Next week, it's expected to drop a bit as all the long-time fans will have already secured their copy, and the somewhat inacessible writing style (judged by today's standards) will make it difficult to become a word-of-mouth success.

The Children of Hurin is the Tale of Turin Turambar (from the Silmarillion) told more fully. So, if you've read Unfinished Tales and HoME , you've seen it before - but here it is all put together in narrative form without interruptions from CJRT - so, it is a nicely done, stand-alone story.

And the artwork by Alan Lee is beautiful . That alone is worth the price of the book. Big Grin

about the book

Presuming that you stated that the book is worth its value just by the artwork I would guess that the book is fascinating? I want to buy it because I love Tolkien, but I really just wanted to know if it was a good read.

I haven't read the book yet but I'm sure it's good. Wish to have more time to read it. And Alan's pictures are always perfect Wink

Seen the Book, read it, the Graphics are great! and every 100 pages or so their are full colour stills.

Oh yeah...it is a very good read. I loved it! I wish more Silmarillion stories could have been finished to this detail by Tolkien himself. Cool
