May CotM

Hello to all -

It had been a while (OK, a long while.) But I have reinstituted the Calendar of the Month feature on my new website:

www.tolkiencalendars.com

The CotM for May is the 2009 Middle-earth New Zealand calendar. My intent is to post these for a month, then create a permanent page upon which to display them. The monthly illustrations from almost all of the previous CotM features can now be found throughout the many entries. Hope you enjoy this one.

Novembre CotM and Other Calendars

Hello to all -

Updated the Calendar of the Month for Novembre (not a typo!) at:

www.tolkiencalendars.com

Hope you enjoy it. Also, added a page (which is very much under construction still) for the 2010 issues that have started coming out.

Also, my daughter and I will soon print the 2010 HI/NETS calendar (now the third in this series.) Malcolm will have some for the exhibition at ADC in March, and René will have some on his Tolkienwinkel site, too. And Beyond Bree (as members already know) will issue their first calendar since 1994 for 2010 (many thanks to Lotho Sackville-Baggins) and in color, too!

There are some very good pictures in that one. Thumb's Up I like especially the Silmarillion themed, and the Roverandom one; you don't get too many of those!

MoME 2009 - the ultimate fun!

The Sons of Fëanor re-embodied in the beginning of the Fourth Age? Yes, for The Maedhros and Tygarya Saga – and, as fire-hearted as ever!

On my way to Morannon on the Walk to Rivendell and Beyond !

MoST 2010 - Congratulations to the winners!

2010 S.T.E.

Hi Rowanberry -

Yes, the Roverandom illo is certainly unique among the several thousand illustrations that I have seen in the calendars of my collection. And the February piece (as disturbing as it is) is also. It is probably (per the advice of one more learned than I on The Silmarillion) "the dead body of Celebrimbor, which was used as Sauron's standard after the decimation of Hollin." Frankly, I prefer "Nimrodel" and "La Puerta Negra." Thanks for looking in!

I don't recall this calendar. I bought them just about every year, too. I don't recall this artist, either.

Hi Elven Archer -

The fact that you don't remember this is probably due to several reasons. Even though this was a commercial (Allen&Unwin) publication and therefore had a fairly high number of copies printed, it does not appear on ebay or other collectibles sites often. Also, it was also published in 1984 thus appearing after the "Year of Dearth" (1983, in which no true Tolkien calendars were published.) So you, as I, may have assumed that the series had been discontinued and did not seek out the 1984 issue.

I don't often post on this thread, but I enjoy seeing the calendars each month, so I'm glad you post this.

This calendar requires a response. That looks awesome! I'm getting one. And though I like looking at them I've not been inclined to buy one for a number of years.

"The misconception about children's fiction is that it's lightweight or fluffy. It's about really big and important things. It's adults who like light and fluffy. Everything is big and important to a child, so their stories are about big and important events." - Steven Moffat

Thanks!

Hi Elmtree -

(1) Am pleased that you enjoy the calendars (which is one of the intents of having a website for them.)

(2) Am pleased that this post inspired you purchase a copy of this. It's a new personal favorite (but aren't all of them to me? Wink )

(3) Am still laughing over your paraphrasing of the classic "Not all that wander..." quote! It's clever (and so good that I wish I had said it!)

Thanks for looking in!
