I used to love the moomin books when I was a kid - and there was an animated series made in the 80s which was also excellent (not to be confused with the horrible semi-anime style one which came out more recently)

I'm reading the Rising Tide by Jeff Shaara. Not the best historical fiction I've read, but it's entertaining and pretty interesting. I like seeing things from Eisenhower's perspective.

The stop motion animation moomins were execellent I think it was read by Richard Murdoch, the other one was from the early nineties from Japan and I agree it wasnt as good as the animated ones from Poland

Yes, that's the one, I'd forgotten it was narrated by 'Stinker' Murdoch - brilliant stuff.

Er - no. Richard Murdoch was on BBC Radio with Arthur Askey in the 1940s/1950s. Askey's nickname for him on the radio was Richard 'Stinker' Murdoch.

Peter Woodthorpe played Gollum on the BBC Radio version (and in Bakshi's thing).

I'm currently re-reading the first two books in The Eldarn Sequence, mostly because I finally got my mitts on the third and final book in the trilogy and have to refresh my sad, old memory before reading it, LOL.

So I'm remembering what I loved about this series, and I can't wait to find out how it ends!

I'm reading a book I read in high school, called Silver Sister, by Lillian Ng. I haven't read it for almost ten years, so it's good to read again. Smile

Just finished reading a book called 'The Media We Deserve: Underachievement in the Fourth Estate', by journalist and author David Salter. It's a scathing review and analysis of Australian media and the impact that poor journalism can have. No No Highly recommend this book! Thumb's Up

It's a good read. Up until 1948. The rest of it is rather disappointing.

Since my last visit, I read Confessions of an English Opium-Eater , Thomas de Quincey's autobiography. Not as shocking as the title suggests but with many - some quite amusing - insights into an early-19th-century youth in GB.

Then back to Pratchett with Thief of Time - love Lu-Tze! - and now in the middle of Nightwatch . Very impressed with that so far. So dark and melancholy, yet typically Pratchett all the same.

I need to re-read ToT. There are some that don't love it much, but I remember reading it with great pleasure. The Auditor traps were my favorite part, I think. Nightwatch = Heart

I've just begun The Lays of Beleriand, v. 3 of HoME. I've only skimmed over that series, except for vv. 6 through 9 which covered LOTR. My copy of Morgoth's Ring just arrived today, completing the set. I'm working on reading the rest of the set in earnest, and find them a fascinating read.

You might like to know that Tolkien was a big fan of the Mary Renault books, and I believe he said that the item of fan mail that gave him the most pleasure was a note from her. (This is in Letters )

Wow, that's a very cool tidbit, Roccondil. Smile

I've finished re-reading the first two books of The Eldarn Sequence and have begun the third and final book in the trilogy. Even though this book was not written the way the first two were because of the death of one of the authors, the remaining partner has so far held very true to the style and tone of the first two and I'm enjoying it a great deal.

I really must look into getting the HoME series one of these days too . . .

I'm reading The Lord of the Rings for the Nth time, I started in August. Going slow because I'm doing apprenticeship and thesis (I'm about to take my degree), and I needed a book which would be by my side for a long time in the little spare time I find.
Before this I've been stunned and impressed by the beauty of "The Unbearable Lightness of Being" by Kundera.
