The big marketing push is slowly starting.
Here's the full theatrical trailer, just put up on Yahoo! Movies
. (note, to watch in HD, you need to select "HD" and pick your format in the little menu underneath the viewer.)
Like TITANIC's, this trailer is loooong (3.5 minutes, a minute longer than the usual maximum) and broadly spells out the story.
It's also amazingly kick-ass. |

It can't be viewed in my location, do you think you could please re-enact it using sock puppets and crudely painted backdrops? |

Maria Maria
She reminds me of a west side story
Growing up in Spanish Harlem
She's living the life just like a movie star
Maria Maria
She fell in love in East L.A.
To the sounds of the guitar
Played by Carlos Santana
Stop the looting, stop the shooting
Pick pocking on the corner
See as the rich is getting richer
The poorer is getting poorer
See mi y Maria on the corner
Thinking of ways to make it better
In my mailbox there's an eviction letter
Somebody just said see you later

I'm officially very excited. Which really worries me. Because I was officially very excited after I saw the final Star Wars Episode I trailer.

Saw the trailer. was not particularly impressed. Looked like a bit of a mess. But I only put so much stock in trailers anyway, good or bad.
I know it's based on a nickolodeon show, but the story line reminds me a bit of Ferngully. |

I think Cameron would have been better off tackling Dan Simmons's
Hyperion
story.

ok lets see....
the character design of the "natives" i dunno, just dont like it.
Dont care for plot, seems a retread mash up of half a dozen golden oldies. including probably every tired military cliche ever used in film.
the blatant political message of "the evil of modern society oppressing natives/taking their land etc..." of course it is wrong.... but I dont want be beat over the head with any message when im going to the movies
seems a kind of schitzophrenic (sp?) movie, cant decide if its live action (with some CGI) or a full blown CGI film
and aint it gonna be done in some new fangled 3D that Cameron is developing? Just on general principle i refuse to see any movie that is 3D. I think he has George Lucasitis, a condition whos main symptom is being so wrapped up in whatever new process has been invented that the film ends up being an amazing technology demonstrator but a terrible terrible movie. |

Does anyone know how long this movie is going to be. Seems like the kind of story they could pull of in an hour and a half.
There something about the design of the natives that makes them very cartoon.
It also seems like Cameron intends to clutter scenes up with lots and lots of machines and characters. But maybe that will work out better for him than for Lucas.
The jungle backgrounds are appealing though. |

I think Old Toby pretty much summed up my feelings - yeah the 'look' of it was ok but the rest - blah. |

I agree with this. It seems ham-handed and simplistic in its message, awkwardly convoluted as a narrative, and oddly cartoonish in many spots. The ugly lovechild of the Ewok/Stormtrooper battle, Dances With Wolves, Jar Jar Binks, Armageddon, the 3rd Matrix movie, Princess Mononoke, Smurfette and Papa Smurf, and the Land Before Time. Can this Franken-movie really have a heart?
We shall see.

The trailer looked too heavily CGI to me, and I didn't like the "you can have your legs back by having an avatar and going to Pandora" angle. Seemed like an unnecessary motivation for a guy who's in the military and whose training might lead him in that direction anyway. And the story line seems very tired, having been done many times before, and not very compelling.
I also agree with Oldtoby that, like Lucas, (although to a lesser extent) Cameron get so enamored with new technology, that he forgets whether or not he actually has a good story/movie on his hands. Things can suck in 3D just as much as they can suck in 2D.
On top of that, I guess I just don't like the way we are being force fed this movie. I mean a preview at Dallas Stadium before a football game on their new Humongotron? Come on. In a stadium that's already excessive, built by an excessive owner, we get an excessive movie trailer on this excessive screen and that just screams to me: Hey this is a big picture by a big Hollywood director and we're gonna shove this thing down your throats. The real subtext being, in my opinion; this is a bloated movie on a bloated budget by a Hollywood director with a bloated ego; we've got so much money invested in this picture, and we're so damn scared it's gonna be a big fat turkey, that we're gonna beat you senseless you over the head with it and make you think you have to go see it.
But hi back to you Tele! and all my other friends here. Hope you are all doing well! |

The funny thing about that is, aside from the late summer bits from ComiCon and the teaser, there's basically been no marketing at all. I know there's been a lot of hoohah on the internet (movie forums, etc) and some of the typical Cameron chestbeating in interviews from a couple years ago (where the whole "it'll be photorealistic!" stuff came from) but the first actual marketing at all was this weekend with the NFL/World Series stuff.
Fox is sort of damned if you do, damned if you don't -- although I suspect there will be absolutely massive marketing from this point on.
Well up until about a week or so ago, I heard almost nothing about it myself, but I'm not a good gauge as I rarely follow these things these days. But, as you said, over the weekend and then Monday it's all over the place on Fox due to World Series/NFL, which I watch alot of this time of year, and I just felt inundated with it in such a short period of time. Made it seem more like a media blitzkrieg than a media blitz, (if you get my distinction). I probably over-reacted a bit.
And I agree with you that the massive marketing campaign is on for this movie and yes,to be honest, part of my initial reaction was indeed anticipatory of such a thing.
Luvin the Phillies right now. How's life in LA? |

Wasn't it Tim Burton who famously remarked that there were only 3 or 4 storylines ever?
The Art of Narration keeps them fresh.

Allow me to paraphrase another celebrity, Dear Abby ( van Buren ):
People force-feed you only because you let them.

Nice platitudes Basil Doesn't mean THIS movie won't suffer from a tired story line, But as I also said, it's only a trailer, good or bad, and the proof is always in the pudding (the actual movie). We'll see.
I'm not letting anyone force feed me either. It simply can't be avoided if you watch football. my team is the Eagles (Fox usually covers them) and the Phillies are in the World Series(Fox is covering that too). Not to mention the commercials on regular Fox broadcasting. |

Maybe we should dub the network Foxatar.
Sounds like an alien-lost-on-earth story from some 80s movie -- the alien, of course, played by Samantha Fox. |
