Morgoth's Ring

Morgoth's Ring is the only volume of HOME that I don't have at the moment. I wanted to ask if it was worth getting, and what your impressions of it. Any here have some thoughts?

Yes, it is worth getting. In fact, I know quite a few people that consider it the most worthwhile volume of HoMe. It contains the Athrabeth Finrod Ah Andreth , the Laws and Customs of the Eldar which are two of Tolkien's most important works, the greatly expanded story of Finwe and Miriel, and generally the most recent and most extensive versions of the first half of the Silmarillion, much of which did not make it into the published work. And it contains "Myths Transformed" - which contains not just Tolkien's contemplated rethinking of much of his mythology but also much very interesting metaphysical discussion about it.

I just read it earlier this year. I found it to be the most interesting book in the series yet, mostly because of all those extra essays and stuff that Voronwe mentioned. The only downside is that you come away with an idea of everything that Tolkien could have accomplished but instead left unfinished. Definitely worth picking up if you're into that sort of thing.

Thanks, Voronwe and Krawler. I've gone ahead and ordered a copy. I've already found in my reading of the other volumes of HOME how Christopher Tolkien's edition of The Silmarillion suffered in the editing. And it's really enriched my understanding of JRRT's mythology. Now my set of HOME will be complete. (except for the Index, which will have to wait.)

If this is a subject that interests you, you may want to take a look at my own Arda Reconstructed: The Creation of the Published Silmarillion .

I'm hopeful that eventually there will be a paperback edition that obviously will be a lot cheaper. Smile

I hope it comes out in paperback one day as well. It's one that I'd just love to have. btw, my copy of Morgoth's Ring just arrived, and I can't wait to read it. I'm going through some other volumes of HoME right now, and am just starting The Lays of Beleriand . It'll be a little while before I get to it.

Okay, just because I know that Voronwe doesn't toot his own horn...

CR, you probably know, but just in case you don't, Voronwe is the author of Arda Reconstructed......

I have read it now twice and I can't highly recommend it enough. You should ask for it for Christmas or the Easter Bunny or Birthday. Worth having on your shelf as a collectible and also supporting one of our very own.

Yep, I know. It's one reason why I would dearly love to have the book. Unfortunately, asking for it for Christmas, etc, is out of the question, as I have no rich uncle to ask if they would spring the $50 for that book, so I'll have to wait and save up. Wink

Aw, GM, we all do those gender-benders once in a while. You don't know how many times with my TORC moniker people focus on the name Robin and think I'm a girl. I always have to disappoint them. Reminds me of an old Johnny Cash song:

Wow! That's a pretty amazing gift. I have a feeling I know who the TORC angel may be.

I look forward to hearing your thoughts about the book. There is, by the way, a list of errata at www.arda-reconstructed.com. If you spot anything that is not covered in that list, please let me know!

This coming from the guy with the most gender-confused nick on TORC.

Voronwe, I just found out about your book. Mucho congratulations and I will definitely be getting my hands on a copy!

Off topic, but have any other TORCers been published yet or are you the first? (My memoirs got rejected by those jerks at ROFLMAO Publishing.)

Crispy, there are two really good books (3rd on the way I hope)

Prim Baggins. She wrote The Hidden Worlds and the second book in that series is The Cold Minds. You can find them on Amazon. IN my mind, they are a mix of fantasy and SciFi, I liked them very much.

And DO get Arda Reconstructed, you will enjoy it very much.

CR, someone out there likes you.

The third book, The Dark Reaches, was released this past summer, and is in my humble opinion the best of the three.

Crispy, I should mention that the illustrations in my book (including the cover illustration) were created by the wonderfully talented Breogan, and the cover was designed by the one and only Whistler.

I was visiting the library at Washington University in St. Louis this morning, saw a copy of "Arda Reconstructed" there, and sat down to read some of it. It was only a brief visit, and I don't have a library card for that library so I couldn't check it out, but I found it enjoyable. I hope that I can sit down properly to read it all the way through some other time.

Thanks, Voronwë. I've bookmarked the site so I can access it anytime. I've noticed in the bibliography of works cited on Page 17, which I've gone through with great interest, you mentioned the books of HoME you cited, with the exception of Vol. VI, The Return of the Shadow. Was that an oversight, or was there nothing in that volume relevant to your book? I'm now beginning the book proper. I decided not to wait until I finished the volumes of HoME, (I'm at Vol. IV, The Shaping of Middle-Earth. I've already read the volumes on LOTR, so I'd be ready for Morgoth's Ring next. I had read Vol. V to read The Lost Road already and wished Tolkien had finished it. I guess his friend C.S. Lewis didn't push him enough.)

It's a habit of mine to read several books at once, so it's no problem doing it.

Vol. VIII, The War of the Ring , is also not cited anywhere in the book. There are only brief citations to the other two volumes of HoMe that make up The History of The Lord of the Rings (Vol. VII, The Treason of Isengard , and Vol. IX, Sauron Defeated ). Needless to say, the volumes of HoMe related to the history of "the Silmarilion" are considerably more relevant.
