My favourite games, in no particular order:

RPGs
Baldur's Gate
Baldur's Gate 2
Knights of the Old Republic
Knights of the Old Republic 2
Mass Effect
The Witcher

I played and liked many (too many! :D) FPSs, action, sport and tactical games throughout my life, but the only kind of games I absolutely LOVE (and the only ones I still play) are RPGs - western RPGs (ex. the Final Fantasy series left me quite unimpressed). Although I had a soft spot also for old school graphic adventures like Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, The Secret of Monkey Island and Shadow of the Comet, but they basically don't make them anymore.

Awesome list Nar,

I think you nailed atleast my favorite RPG's, although i might want to add neverwinter nights 1 to that list.

Mass effect i am still undecided on, haven't played it that much yet but it looks good. The witcher was one of the best rpg's of the past years especially after the disappointment called Neverwinter nights 2.

Awesome list Nar,

Thank you - although I beg to differ on NWN 1 (the single player, at least) ;)

Mass Effect is fantastic, although it's a bit on the short side, and the side quests completely lack the depth of the main storyline and are a bit repetitive. I hope they'll work on this for the sequel.

Maeglin:

Since you liked The Witcher, I inform you there is a short (but free :D ) expansion on the official site, plus an editor. And another free expansion is coming for the end of September ;)

Nar, thank you, i will check it out. :)

But in september are they not bringing out a totally changed Witcher? Or was that just a rumor and was a free expansion meant?

Yes, the expansion will come out with the enhanced edition in September. Those who have already purchased the game will be able to download it for free if they register at the official site.

Hmm, the only game I've played from the top 5 list is Super Smash Bros, and while it's okay, I must admit I like the GameCube version better. There's nothing Wii-specific to the controls, which is sad, and I guess I'm still used to the GC controller.

Does having GTA IV on the list twice really make sense? Even if they're on different consoles.

For me, my favorite single player RPG is Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. This has been by far the most in-depth and immersive RPG I've played. If only there were one like this about Middle-Earth...

I was recently replaying Planescape: Torment, and it definitely belongs to my "favourite games" list too. Great plot, great characters, great ending.

(Incidentally, anyone noticed how similar the premise is to Memento - amnesiac protagonist using tattoos to remember what to do next on his quest, and he has a sidekick on which he has a "Don't trust him!" note. Looks like the Nolan brothers played the game and freely borrowed some ideas from it  :P )

My favorite games would have to be subdivided by genre-- Age of Empires II for RTS, and... um... dagnabit I have trouble choosing favorites otherwise. :|

The only RPG I've really played to the end has been Knights of the Old Republic. I got to Tatooine and kind of hit a wall for a few months, but then I tried it again and figured it out-- and got really into it. Played the entire rest of the game in one night. :P Had a test that morning which I almost missed because I was watching the final cinematic. It felt so much more epic after I experienced it on no sleep. :D

Knights of the Old Republic 2 is worth playing too, balrogthane. It's darker, maybe more ambitious than the first one - though, overall, I'd rank it below KOTOR 1. An excellent game.

(with the exception of the very last part and the ending, which... err... there isn't a way to be polite about this... suck.)

Thanks for the tip, Nar. They have that for X-Box, right? Not just 360? Yeah, they must.

Oh! just remembered another one! Super Smash Brothers has to go in the top five. Not exactly original, perhaps, but that is an insanely fun game. My brother and I usually play with no items, but we have to play with unusual characters; if we play with the ones we're best at, we get far too tense.

Has anyone here played Eternal Darkness? That's another good one. Major props to Silicon Knights for trying something like that.

Eternal Darkness is a masterpiece. I loved that the sanity effects directly engaged me as a player and not just my character.

But overall it seems my favorite all-time game would have to be Diablo or Gauntlet. Can't get enough of the multi-player dungeon crawlers.

Oh yeah, really got into Call of Duty 4 recently. Friend and I played through the single-player (which I thought was awesome-- great job of sticking to the first-person, and I doubt I'll soon forget manning the Spectre's guns :D ). But now we're working on increasing out multiplayer skills... we started with an average life of 6 seconds, and have yet to end a match with more kills than deaths, but we are getting better. :P
