I just finished reading (for the Umpteenth time!) Heinlein's "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress."
That book is full of RAH's Philosphy--not that I always agree- and clear, step by step thinking. The last few pages always make me weep. I'd love to see a movie about it, but I think it would be difficult to get it all in; it is very dense.
IMO this is a better book than most of his; far better than some.

I am reminded of "Ender's Game" where the movie makers ran out of movie time and could not treat some subjects adequately.

Just finished Carl Sagan's 'Contact'. Way better than the really good movie, but I was shocked at the ending.

2. WAY more germane to the plot

I CAN"T believe the film makers left this ending out of the movie. Really would have given the ending way more meaning.

I'm scarfing my way through a bunch of whodunits I found on the freebie tables at the science fiction convention we went to this past weekend. Right now I'm re-reading Mary Monica Pulver's Ashes to Ashes because my old copy is buried in a box somewhere with the rest of the series. I picked up a lot of Christies; amazing that after all these years there are still several that I haven't read yet. That'll be amended real soon now.

Just finished reading "There Will Be Bears" by Ryan Gebhart. Written by a friend of a friend and not normally something I would by for myself. However, it was very funny and captured the 13-year-old boy voice very well. I read it quickly, and I was sad when it was over.

Right now I'm reading Rinkitink in Oz which is a slightly girlish series but a few of the books are interesting .

I just finished "Glory Road" by Heinlein. I keep turning up copies of his things that have been buried. It is, IMO, fantasy, not Science Fiction, but not a defect. It is 50 or so years old, but not dated (the references to the Viet Nam War do not change that).

I am not sure I can express this well, but Heinlein's books strike me as very simple and straightforward, even as the plot takes twists and turns. Some of the more recent S-F I have read seem to need to throw in extra elements that do nothing but confuse the plot line. But I am not current on the more recent stuff-I have been reading Mysteries-- so maybe I should not comment.

I am reading the "When the British burned Washington." It is a very detailed account of the British assault on Washington, with battle details, etc. I am sure it is a great resource, but it is too detailed for me. I thought "1776" was detailed. . .

I just finished First Impressions by Charlie Lovett.

This and his first book Bookman's Tale are wonderful. They are both about bibliophiles who get caught up in the mystery of a book that could impact literary history in a big way. Bookman's Tale deals with Shakespeare and First Impressions deals with Jane Austen. Both are packed with mystery, suspense, a dash of romance, history, and book loving.

Started Les Miserables few days back. So far (11th chapter) it's been quite slow and don't know if I should say that's boring or not. the philosophical conversations, the ideals, thoughts of the Bishop are fascinating. Though I'm sure the book's great and would love to read it further too.

It took me YEARS to read that one. It became my "Sick Project" because when I was sick was the only time I could focus on it, for some reason.
