i suppose what i described earlier wd be a continuity error as the time between bag end and the prancing pony wd not allow for such a serious deterioration in his nails. there must have been a gap in filming those scenes. slightly surprised he was allowed to get away with such a visual thing by the director given people stop biting their nails every day, especially when they have hollywood help.

I think Frodo's dirty, bitten-down nails were a nice touch whether kept intentionally or not. (I'd assume the earlier)

speak when you need to speak
demand what needs to be demanded

demanding freedom from servitude for example.
