Cubicle 7 Announces The One Ring Second Edition

Postby Otaku-sempai » Fri May 17, 2019 8:02 am

Big RPG news from game publisher Cubicle 7:

Today we are very excited to announce that we are currently hard at work on a second edition of The One Ring Roleplaying Game...

...The One Ring – The Lord of the Rings™ Roleplaying Game brings players further into the Twilight of the Third Age and closer to the events of the War of the Ring. It has been almost 25 years since the defeat of Smaug the Terrible and the hope that came with the death of the Dragon has dwindled. A Shadow grows in the East and the Dark Lord’s forces are mustering their strength. The Steward of Gondor has need of heroes, and great deeds await those who would answer the call...

...The One Ring – The Lord of the Rings™ Roleplaying Game will launch between Q4 2019 and Q1 2020 with the core rules and Starter Set. Below you can see the products currently in development. We will update these with release dates as they become available.

- The One Ring – The Lord of the Rings™ Roleplaying Game: The 352 page core rules featuring stunning new art, maps, rules for character creation, and everything you will need to adventure in the lands of Middle-earth.

- The One Ring – The Lord of the Rings™ Starter Set: Explore the Misty Mountains and reclaim the Horn of the Storm in the perfect introduction to The One Ring Roleplaying Game. This box set includes a 64 page adventure, a 48 page guide to the lands of the Misty Mountains, a set of dice, six pre-generated characters, character handouts, tokens, and more.

- Loremaster’s Screen and Legends of Middle-earth: A beautifully illustrated Loremaster’s Screen along with a 32 page collection of mini adventures that Loremaster’s can drop into their games.

- Fell Foes: A dedicated bestiary containing fell foes and dangerous creatures from all across Middle-earth.

- Minas Tirith – The Tower of Guard: A guide to the city of Minas Tirith and its surrounding lands.

- The Errantries of the King: A campaign adventure set in Gondor. Written by Gareth Ryder-Hanrahan, author of The Darkening of Mirkwood.

- Moria – The Long Dark: Explore Khazad-dûm deep beneath the Misty Mountains in this long awaited adventure for The One Ring – The Lord of the Rings™ Roleplaying Game.

From Cubicle 7:
Last week we revealed the cover for The One Ring – The Lord of the Rings™ Roleplaying Game by Johan Grenier. Along with the hugely positive reception, a number of canny fans spotted that there seemed to be more to the scene that we couldn’t see. This week we’re happy to show off the full piece in all its glory.

The cover scene is titled “The Coming of Boldog” and depicts Gandalf along with our iconic party — a Hobbit of the Shire, a Beorning, a Dwarf of the Lonely Mountain, an Elf of Mirkwood, a Rider of Rohan, and a Man of Minas Tirith — fleeing from a horde of orcs and a terrifying cave troll. “The Coming of Boldog” will be a free adventure that will be released alongside the core rules so that you and your Company can begin your adventures straight away.

Previously we shared artwork for two of the cultures shown on the cover — the Hobbit of the Shire and Man of Minas Tirith — so we thought we’d share the rest of the Company.

The One Ring Second Edition: Rangers of the North

Image

The One Ring – The Lord of the Rings™ Roleplaying Game presents players with 11 different Cultures to choose from, including two Advanced Cultures. The first, the High Elves of Rivendell, has already been mentioned. The second is one of the most popular and requested Cultures from first edition – the Rangers of the North.

Pardon my ignorance. So is this going to be a D&D style game. Character sheets, dice, and what not?

Yes, more or less. The One Ring uses game mechanics and a tone that try to capture the flavor and themes of Tolkien's Middle-earth over the more hack-and-slash aspects of D&D.

C7's Adventures in Middle-earth basically takes the material from The One Ring and re-interprets it for D&D 5e.

I haven't played TOR much (it's hard to find the time these days), but I have enjoyed the sessions I have been able to sit in on. That's mostly been at local gaming conventions.

Cubicle 7 has posted a look at the cover art for The One Ring: The Lord of the Rings Roleplaying Game Collector’s Edition, including interior art that will be in both the Collector's Edition and the standard edition. CE Cover by Rachael Macken. Standard Cover art by Johan Grenier. Map by Jared Blando. Art by Giulio Perozziello Nazgul, Federica Costantini, Michele Parisi, Nicola Angius, Andrea Tentori Montalto.

The Collector’s Edition of The One Ring – The Lord of the Rings™ Roleplaying game comes in a beautiful slipcase, adorned with a map of Middle-earth detailed with a spot UV varnish. The core rules are bound in leather and emblazoned with The One Ring script picked out in silver foil-stamped Tengwar. The back cover features the translated poem, also detailed in silver foil-stamp. It reads:

One Ring to rule them all.

One Ring to find them.

One Ring to bring them all.

And in the darkness bind them

Sorry, the images are a bit too large to post here.

The One Ring 2nd Ed Character Customisation

Postby Otaku-sempai » Fri Sep 13, 2019 6:32 am

From Cubicle 7:
Hello, it’s #TORSday again and we thought we would talk a bit more about character customisation in The One Ring – The Lord of the Rings™ Roleplaying Game 2nd Ed. We’ve already talked a bit about Attributes and how they now impact the Target Number (TN) for your skills. We’ve talked a little about the eleven different Cultures, each with their own Backgrounds, Cultural Blessings and Rewards. Likewise, we’ve dropped a few hints about the six Callings and how they will have a strong influence on your character for Common Skills, Hope and Shadow and today’s subject — Specialties and Traits.

Jacob Rodgers is back with another great post on combat for our upcoming The One Ring The Lord of the Rings Roleplaying Game! We also have some new art to share with you! Let us know what you think over on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

It’s #TORsday again, and it’s time for a fight! While heroes in The One Ring The Lord of the Rings Roleplaying Game rarely seek out combat, they are forced to fight against the servants of the Enemy from time to time. Combat is an important, but infrequent, part of the game.

We have been busy play-testing the upcoming The One Ring – The Lord of the Rings™ Roleplaying Game 2nd Ed here in the C7 office.

The One Ring Producer Emmet Byrne, artist JG O’ Donoghue (who’s work you may recognise from The Shire and Minas Tirith pieces), Wrath & Glory Producer Zak Dale-Clutterbuck and CEO Dom McDowall had a fun and eventful run-through of our Starter Set adventure after work last week. The adventure, written by Jacob Rodgers, is set in The Misty Mountains and sees the heroes tasked by Gandalf with retrieving and ancient relic that has the ability to rouse Giants from their slumber. The Company must find the artefact before it falls into the hands of The Enemy, and then travel down the Anduin to meet Gandalf in Minas Tirith. The adventure does a fantastic job of teaching new players how to play The One Ring and is also a great introduction to veterans, who can get up to speed on many of the changes with second edition.

More at the link. I see that the new core book has a more extensive map of Middle-earth that extends from the Ice Bay of Forochel to the Havens of Umbar, and east past the Sea of Rhûn.

The One Ring: Councils
Posted at Cubicle 7:
Image
Welcome to #TORsday, strangers. It’s time for a meeting, a rather important one, about Councils in The One Ring The Lord of the Rings Roleplaying Game.

In second edition, Councils replace Encounters as the most socially focused of the three primary adventuring activities (the other two being Combat and Journeys). Not every meeting is worthy of a Council — you can meet friendly folk at The Prancing Pony, negotiate with a wily trader, or question a suspicious stranger just by using the core skills and good roleplaying. But when the Company meets with the Great and the Good, their behaviour can influence those lords and ladies, causing them to render greater assistance or shoo away rude troublemakers.

More at the link above. I think the most valuable thing to come out of this article is the clarification on when it is appropriate to use the Encounter/Council rules.

Middle-earth Map Reveal

From Cubicle 7:
This #TORsday we are delighted to share the map of Middle-earth for The One Ring – The Lord of the Rings Roleplaying Game!

"I wisely started with a map."

The new edition of The One Ring will see players venture to new and previously unexplored lands, and tread the well worn paths they have travelled for years, so we knew players and Loremasters alike would need a complete map of Middle-earth. To take on this mammoth task we needed a truly gifted cartographer, so we sought out the services of the incredible Jared Blando. Jared has created some of the most memorable and iconic maps in tabletop roleplaying so we knew he would deliver a truly special version of Middle-earth. And he has done just that.

Map of Middle-earth: https://diw2l4zrbsp3w.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Marketing_Middle-earth-Map_Colour-1024x724.jpg

One thing that I find particularly notable about the map is that, though the Mountains of the East are not visible, it shares several details that are also specific to the maps that have appeared at @LOTRonPrime such as the rivers flowing from the east and south into the Sea of Rhûn.
