FESTIVUS...for the rest of us

Just as Tolkien and the Inklings used to meet at The Bird and the Baby, come in here to converse about whatever might be on your mind. This is the place for all off-topic conversation.

FESTIVUS...for the rest of us

Postby erinhue » Mon Dec 23, 2019 5:12 am

Hail and Hiya Ladies and Germs Today is the day we celebrate that wonderfully inclusive holiday immortalized on the Jerry Seinfeld show FESTIVUS. An alternate to the usual celebrations that anyone can enjoy and take part in. tonight right after dinner The Boy and I will be wrestling it out for family dominance. This will be right after the Feats of Strength. To add to the celebration we will be dining on franks and beans the official meal of Festivus or at least around here.

So tell me, how will you be celebrating this glorious holiday? What feats of strength will you perform?

Also, Tolkien's estimate that the Shire calendar is in advance of our own by about 10 days* puts us in the middle of the Hobbits' Yuletide (29 December to 2 January converts to 20-25 December for us).

* See The Lord of the Rings, Appendix D.

Hiya hue!!! been a long long time since we have conversed. Found my way back to Torc back in September...decided to stay. Happy Festivus to you..uhhh, not celebrating myself..although the days between Thanksgiving and Christmas are rather Festivus..I did lift a fifty pound box today as a feat of strength?? Does that count?

Does wrestling a ten-pound turkey into a roasting pan count? No? Hmmmmm, how about juggling seventeen different chores while not burning the stuffing or gravy? :P :D

I'd love to contribute a Garfield Christmas piccy, but Photobucket has turned into the Grinch That Stole All My Photos . . . grrrrrrrrr. BAH HUMBUG!!

:D :D :D

Yes, so rwhen has told me . . . but first I have to take my poor old laptop into the local Best Buy - the Geek Squad will need to strip 'er and install Windows 10. Seems support for Windows 7 is ending . . . :P and I'm too lazy to do all the uninstall / re-install stuff needed . . .

Then I'll look into seeing what it will take to ransom my photos from the Pirates at Photobucket . . . and transfer them to IMGUR . . .

I haven't thought of Festivus in a long time but it does remind me of what my hubby says: to all the people he says "Happy Holidays" to who come back with a very insistent "Merry Christmas!", he says, "That's one holiday; how about St Nicholas' day, Diwali, Yule, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, New Year's, and that's just off the top of my head; shouldn't they all be happy? Every day is a holiday somewhere!"

Right you are! For instance: Today I am lunching with my sister and a couple of friends at a chichi cafe here in the farm-to-fork capital celebrating

GALENTINES DAY

Yeah, so I made some round magnets as little gifts:

[get it? 'stick' (magnet)? 'around' round?]

SOOOOOO....anyway...how are ya'll?
"And it is said by the Eldar that in water there lives yet the echo of the Music of the Ainur more than in any substance else that is in this Earth; and many of the Children of Ilúvatar hearken still unsated to the voices of the Sea, and yet know not for what they listen."

There is something profound about standing AT sea level.
